‘Communicate an idea in film’

Using montage filming and editing to create a short film (40 seconds – 1 minute) which communicates a single, simple idea.

In this film you are not trying to tell a story with a beginning, middle and end but rather you should try create a sequence which communicates a feeling, a tone, an atmosphere…

Here are some examples of montages, which communicate a feeling only and impression of people, places, events….

Some starting ideas:

Choose two ideas – one from each list, one proverb and one emotional idea.

Spend time with your partners discussing the possibilities that these offer, you must try and use a camera and tripod expressively to film your people, places, impressions, ideas.

You should film 12 – 15 different shots of people, places, moments in time that capture your idea.

You must also include at least one ‘exciting’ transitions – subscribe to instagram https://www.instagram.com/photos_tricks117/ which has lots of ideas on how to achieve these.

Remember:

  • Variety of shot distances – close up, mid shot, long shot
  • Variety of angles – low angle, high angle, canted angle
  • Variety of movement – pan, tracking, ped, dolly, hand held.
  • Shoot with one of the ‘funky’ transitions in mind.

Shoot significant objects, subjects so that you can then cut to them as reaction or eyeline matches.
