Junior Reporter

There is an opportunity for 10 students from across the island to become a junior reporter for the Island Games.

This will be an event taking place after all the exams are done and so is a perfect time.

They want, “Local students aged 16-18 to join the official Island Games Media, Reporter and Communications team as Junior Reporter during the Island Games (8-14th July 2023). Gaining real-life journalistic experience, you will work together to seek out and share stories from the biggest sporting event the island has ever hosted. Your articles, interviews, content and various production work will be hosted on the Island Games’ official website and various media channels.

Up to 3,000 athletes and team members will arrive in Guernsey as 24 islands compete across 14 sports. The Junior Reporters will be telling some of the stories behind the Games. Meeting and interviewing athletes who have overcome adversity to compete, Team Gozo’s first experience at the Games, or the coach who has been to every Games since it began in 1985! And with another 1000+ volunteers, added to the mix, there will be countless stories waiting to be found and shared.”

This is AN AMAZING opportunity for students to get some amazing experiences, build their portfolios, boost their presence online and do some networking.

A must for any student serious about going into the creative and media industries.

See Mr Gregson for an application form, which you should email to: info@orchardpr.com

  • What: Meet Clive Myrie

  • When: Thursday 9th March 1.00 -2.00pm

  • Where: St Pierre Park Hotel

  • Who: All year 13 Media Student

Clive Myrie is a BBC journalist and presenter who was in Kiev at the start of the war last year in February 2022, when Russian forces invaded Ukraine, he is also the presenter of Mastermind.

Mr Myrie is in Guernsey for Skipton International and they have kindly agree to offer lunch and a presentation at St Pierre Park Hotel.

This is a golden opportunity to hear the views of a senior BBC journalist on the state of the Media Ecology and we will be able to develop some questions for him to suit our needs for the exams in May.

You will need to make your own way to and from the venue and should arrive  by 12.45 to register with your teacher and have a bite to eat. Students with dietary requirements should inform Mr Gregson – egregson@web.grammar.sch.gg

We will then be meeting Mr Myrie and listening to his view on a range of topics (your choice).

  • The challenges to journalism in the face of social media
  • Fake news, filter bubbles and echo chambers
  • Changes to media distribution and globalisation
  • Extremist groups and conspiracy theories

Hooray – we made it!

So this unit has been tough going but well done for sticking with it – there is a lot to learn and take on, but we know you can do it.

Make sure you revisit your notes and the blog posts in order to help yourselves prepare for the exam.

Don’t forget to use the category at the top of the blog for the theories – it might be good to do your own mini ‘in a nutshell’ theory list so that you are not overwhelmed.

We will be planning Ecology essays in the first 2 lessons next week and then focusing for the final 3 lessons on revisiting the Music Industry – but a lot of what we have done in Ecology, will be really useful for the MI question.

Welcome to Year 13

Well done.

You have made it this far. You are in Year 13. One more year of formal schooling!

Get Ready!

We are going to hit the ground running and will be editing your videos for the next couple of weeks and hopefully getting in some expert help from Specsavers’ Creative Department.

To make the most of their help and advice, you need to make sure you have plenty of footage to work with.

If you were filming over the summer, we hope the footage is good. If you didn’t manage to get what you wanted, then you need to do the filming now – this weekend at the latest.

Make sure you spend time on your blog – you do not want to be behind this year – trust me.

Summer Sign Off

Remember you can collect a camera and tripod from school this week if you are finishing off your filming this summer.

Don’t forget to get the blog as up to date as possible over the summer. You only have 4 weeks on your return to complete the music video.

Have a smashing break and thanks for all your hard work so far.

Best wishes
