Previous Student’s Work

The same or similar conventions are shared throughout all music videos. This can be through conventions such as:

  • Narrative
  • Performance
  • Mise-En-Scene
  • Lip-Syncing
  • Camera Techniques
  • Editing
  • Sound

The use of all of these conventions will create a music video with satisfactory quality. To be able to recognize the acceptable standard of a music video, watching previous students work will help me see which conventions are needed most to create a music video with even a professional standard.

Rock Bottom – King Krule

The degree of the quality of this music video made by previous students is above average and it is presented with a professional standard. However, with analysis there are particular areas which have restricted the groups optimal performance.

Camera and editing have been used sufficiently and multiple types of shots had been used which were cut accordingly with the beat of the song. There is a noticeable change in the pace of edit as the song builds up tension using long, mid and close up shots to target different areas which were to be noticed by the audience. The shots are well placed using effects like depth of field making the music video appear as if it was filmed professionally and there is a good use of a tripod used at the right times.

Conventions of mise-en-scene have been thought of and used for this music video but meaning isn’t portrayed very well. The use of a suit is quite basic and doesn’t correlate with the indie/alternative genre of the song.

There is a good split between the narrative and performance and cutting between them often to keep the audience intrigued. There is a disjunctive narrative which is quite simple and doesn’t go into much detail but well filmed which helps to gain interest from the audience. The performance is also simple in a small room with low key lighting. The lip syncing was done well and in time with the lyrics of the song.

Overall, this music video is of good quality and has a good standard for a music video for the genre. From the analysis of a former students work, I can recognize which conventions are required to produce a music video which portray meaning. In addition, as this is a good music video, I am able to use this to set the minimum standard of my own production in order to see what areas can be better to be able to make a high-standard, professional looking music video.

Music Video Form & Conventions

From the analysis of these music videos, I have now gained a coherent understanding of the typical standard of professional videography. I can now use this for my own benefit as now, I have a greater insight to the mise-en-scene, editing and any other technical conventions used to create a sufficient music video which would be suitable to display even to the public. Without taking in mind and not including even the smallest details in my music video, the end result may completely differ and seem as if there was a lack of effort.
