My Tour Poster

The brief that we were given was to create a tour poster that suited the genre that you were given. I was given the indie style so I decided to create a tour poster that I believed best suited the genre that I was given. I was told to include the following in the tour poster

  • Name of the artist and tour
  • Dates and venues
  • Other info e.g. website

After I had included all of the criteria, I was able to show the client the tour poster and they were happy with it.

The three targets that I would give myself in order to make my tour poster better would be;

  • If I were to do this task again, I would chose a different image because the background was quite hard to cut out as it wasn’t a plain background and my model isn’t facing the camera which may not attract as many customers.
  • I would also, chose a different filter to use on the image because I think it looks a bit old fashioned and the filter made it hard for me to chose a different background as they went together.
  • Finally, I would use more than one font because I only used one and I think my poster would look better if I had incorporated more than one font into it. I would also use more than one colour to differentiate between colours and fonts.

We were asked to watch a you tube tutorial on how to work In Design in order to have more independent learning and to not rely on the teacher to teach us everything. This you tube tutorial helped me because it gave clear instructions on how to work the program.

After we had learned the basics of In Design, we then made our own professional magazine covers in which we created a replica of one that had already existed. I tried to get it as close to the magazine as I could including the right font that ‘NME’ use.

  • I think I got the NME font correct and I think I kept as close to the real size as I could.
  • In order to improve, I think I could have chosen a better image as the one that I chose was quite blurry and is not the same image as the magazine
  • i also could have got the colors a bit more accurate. For example, the NME logo on the professional magazine is white and on mine it is red because of the image that I chose it would have been hard to do the masthead in white.

This will help me in my future tasks because I am now able to use In Design confidently and this will help me when it comes to creating my real music magazine because I will have practiced using the software and seen how a real magazine is created.

In my next task, I will need to think about what colors that I use and also the fonts, how big the font is and what image I will use. If I get all of this right then it will make my magazine more interesting for the audience that I will be aiming at.

We were asked to create a professional music magazine front cover which

The camera talks

My images using MES tell a story and these nine in particular, I believed, told the best. I was able to tell these stories by the use of camera angles, body language and facial expressions.

The high angle of the girl standing represents a sense of fear because she looks innocent and vulnerable. This image will make the audience fell sorry for her because she is all alone and the high angle will make the loneliness more intense. I think we were able to convey the story best in this image because the camera angle releases a sense of sympathy and perhaps guilt for some people who may want to be friends with her.

This will help me going forward because I will be able to use MES and camera techniques together to tell a story through my images and connect with the audience as they will be able to understand what I will be trying to convey.

Technical camera terms

My group went out and took a number of images that we will believed told a story through MES and in particular how I can use framing and camera distance to help tell a story.

This will help me in my next task because I will chose nine of my favorite images from the photo shoot and annotate them for the use of the camera technique, the denotation of the subject/object in the frame and finally the connotation that comes with the combining of camera and MES.

My image that uses mise-en-scene for meaning

The mood board that my group decided to create represents how the indie conventions can vary depending on the context.

Independent music (often referred to as indie music or indie) is music produced independently from commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing.

Mise-en-scene;

  • Costume- Indie costumes are very unusual and often scruffy, it could also be considered old fashioned.
  • Lighting- Indie lighting seems to be very harsh and almost a mix between rock and hippy.
  • Acting- Indie people act chill and look as though they live an easy life.
  • Make up- Some indie make up can be very extra and bold but at the same time it could be subtle depending on the context of the music video.
  • Props- A lot of indie conventions use and play guitars  and are often wearing hats.
  • Setting- Indie settings are often represented as a kind of festival vibe.

Conventions are a way in which things are done and people act in a specific genre  these are all of the Indie conventions that we as a group need to think of for our music magazine.

Once my group had encoded Joe into an outfit that we thought was appropriate for our indie style genre, our class decided it and came back with connotations to describe what the outfit made them think of. As you can see, some of the words are old fashioned, chill and alternative. Our class decided Joe’s outfit perfectly because they came up with the same words that our group felt was appropriate to the genre and that we had included in our mood board slide.

These are a selection of the photos that we took in different locations and angles.

We decided that the hat was not indie style and did not go with our genre or our Mise-en-scene. This was a mistake with our costume so for the rest of photos we decided to get rid of the hat. I think that the images that show the whole outfit look better because it allows the audience to engage with my genre.

We decided to take the images in various backgrounds to see which one best suited our genre. The background with the wall allows us to edit in our own picture that goes with our genre, however the tree background gives a relaxed and nature vibe.

My group chose this as our favourite photo because we thought that this image consisted of the best angle and all of the guitar which represents a chilled and relaxed vibe.

MES is very important when making decisions based on images because the lighting and camera angle all have an effect on how the audience interacts with your media.

This will help me when making decisions because I will know that I need to convey the use of MES in my images. I will have to look at the kind of lighting that I use, the camera angle, the body language and the facial expressions in my music magazine. This will allow me to connect with my audience through MES as my image will tell a story.

Print media that communicates meaning

Deconstructing this tour poster has allowed me to go in depth with how connotations have meaning and how denotations lead people to those meanings. As I have shown, every denotation symbolises something that is targeted at the audience to give the media something extra.

For example, in Ellie Gouldings tour poster I found that one denotation is the triangle at the top of the poster with ‘EG’ in it. The connotation for this could be that she is trying to give off a mysterious vibe as the triangle could be associated with the Illuminati which could be suggested as weird.

Analyzing this tour poster will help me in making my music magazine because it will allow me to add features which my audience will be able to decode the denotations and engage with me more through my media.
