Final Song Choice

Pretty Girl – Clairo

Sylvie and I decided on this choice together because it’s a song that both of us already really liked, and we both like Clairo as an artist. On top of this, it’s a genre that we both enjoy, indie pop, which puts us at an advantage because we know the nature and conventions of it. The song has a very pleasant and floaty feel, and I feel that the almost childlike and dreamy outlook on love suggested through the lyrics and sound could lend itsself very well to the creation of our video.

Shoot 2 Reflection – Narrative

For this part of the shoot we focused on recording the narrative elements of the music video, which involved using sock puppets to convey the story. We used these as we felt it would help us to replace the problem of poor acting which could appear unrealistic with more deliberate non-realism, and it would also reflect the childlike outlook on love that the song discusses. We attempted to convey the progress of the star’s relationship, as well as the eventual unravelling of it as time goes on.

What went well…

  • Shot a large amount of footage with a variety of different and interesting shots
  • Conveyed various moods through the use of angles and camera work

Even better if…

  • The memory card ran out of storage, and it would have been better if we had cleared more space in advance, or had a spare card on hand

Favourite Music Video from Former Student

Favourite Video

This was my favourite music video from a previous student because I felt that it combined a number of strong story and narrative elements.

An element of this video that I really enjoyed was the Mise-en-Scene of the whole video. The shots are all very well composed, and the continuous cuts to the water are beautiful and, as well as giving the video a consistent feel, really help to tie the whole thing together.

Another thing that I really liked about this video was the editing techniques that the students used. An example of this is the quick cuts between the star jumping in the water and the close ups of him having water poured on him, which were effectively edited to the rhythm and tempo of the song, as well as providing a feeling of intensity to the moment.

On top of this, the narrative that the student chose was effective because it clearly portrayed the theme of the end of a relationship without relying too heavily on more blatant story telling and acting, which could have damaged the audience’s perception of the video, making it feel unrealistic and confusing.
