Test Shoot

Before making the full music video, we decided to do a test shoot for lip-syncing and shots, as well as editing to the beat.

Even though it was just a test shoot, the model wore a leather jacket for the star image. To further the star image, we included a close-up of the guitar to show off the skill of the musician and make him seem extraordinary. For the real thing, we would have a complete costume, probably something along the lines of jeans, a t-shirt, and a leather jacket. We would also use a better location than changing rooms, and a real instrument.

The jump cuts were good but to improve we could have included more varied shots for more coverage, like a cut to close up showing the musician’s skill or more varied angles, as some of the shots were very long in duration. We could have included different angles to increase the pace of the video. We also could have included more shots actually showing the lip syncing.

Editing was mostly good, the colour correction and reduction of saturation gave a good effect. The only main issue was that some of the jump cuts were in awkward places as some of the shots were limited in usability. In future, I would also include more transitions.

Making this will be useful in the future as I now have a better understanding of the shooting process, what shots work and what shots I need to include next time, and also more editing experience, especially editing to the beat.

Montage

To prepare for making my music video, I created a montage in a group of four. The montage had the theme of “curiosity killed the cat”. This was to help to learn how to film and edit using Premiere Pro.

We made a storyboard to plan our montage before we started filming. This was to ensure that we had a variety of shots that would convey the themes. We then had to edit the clips together for narrative sense and used filters to give it the right atmosphere.

Some parts of the video worked really well. The music, transitions, and effects were good, as well as some of the ideas for scenes and acting.

To improve, I would add more varied camera angles and distances, as well as more action shots like a cut to close up seeing the phone hitting the wall.

This has helped me as I have learned the basics of editing videos using premiere pro (transitions, audio, filters, etc.), as well as using a DSLR camera to video.
