I’m A Media Prosumer

On the slide you can see the different media’s I consume on a regular basis. Especially social media such as Snapchat and TikTok.

One type of media I consume regularly is drama and fashion related. Like Keeping Up With the Kardashians to buying and selling clothes on Depop.

Then lastly I watch and listen to a lot of Breaking bad on Netflix or listen to Lily Allen on Spotify.

One aspect of Media Studies which I am intrigued about is Blumler and Katz. Which include;

Entertainment-This is usually TV based so factors like Netflix and shows on that like American Horror Story or Breaking Bad.

Personal Identity-My personal identity involves a lot of music, likewise, Arctic Monkeys or Lilly Allen.

Social Interaction-Social Medias like Snapchat, Instagram and Tiktok allow me to connect with all my peers online. Not only does this allow a sense of communication but a sense of belonging as you have the freedom to get in touch with people who live far away.

Education And Information-In one way Social Media is a platform which allows you to consume Education And Information, But the main source on Education and Information would be a news app, or listening to audiobooks.

Conventional Design Features

To demonstrate my understanding of Conventional Design Features I have annotated a film magazine to get to grips with what is included in the production process, as in key terms, What features are used in a magazine and how to correctly apply these features.

Why are these features important?

Masthead:

The masthead lets the consumers know what the product is called. Ideally you want the mast head to be clear and noticeable to grasp attention.

Main Cover Star:

Having a main cover star gives a sense of curiosity, not only this, it gives structure to the magazine it makes it look sleek and eventful. Yet gain it contracts an audience and makes the magazine easy on the eye.

Issue date, Price, Barcode:

A magazine requires this fundamental attribute. To sell an item such as a magazine it needs to have a barcode purely to sell the product on.

Captions:

Captions address what the magazine is about and features that add up to fit the magazine into its specific category.

Pug:

Pugs highlight some key factors within the magazine, Normally pugs are a snip of the inside of the magazine. But they can also can just be a review.

Inset:

Normally the inset involves the main cover stars name or acknowledges them into the magazine so you know who it is.

Plug:

Similar to the pug, the plug adds dimension to the key factors of a magazine, but instead its directed above the mast head

My Reflection

After researching and applying my knowledge I believe that I can now produce my own music magazine using Conventional Design Features. Annotating a magazine of my choice really helped my understand the importance of Conventional Design Features.

Contact Sheet

Below is a slide show containing 4 contact sheets which a took for my music magazine.

Evaluation of my shoot.

When doing my shoot, There was a few elements which I though could have been changed or just taken out.

First of all, My model (Kyla Bradley) was wearing a denim hat. After taking some pictures with this on I decided to just see what the chain would look like by itself. Yet again, I thought it would be a good idea to and another prop which happened to be some large sunglasses to cover her eyes. Deciding this was satisfactory, I took the rest of my shots like this as this was distinctively a feature that worked the best in my opinion.

Overall the photo shoot operated well and I am extremely satisfied with the out come and quality of my photos. I am also very happy with the level of photos I took, taking many photos gives me the option to really chose the foremost image possible (especially for my cover page and main image on my music magazine.)

One thing I could have potentially tried is trying out one more prop, Like a bandanna, to enhance the aesthetic further. I also could have tried out one more make up look to discover different versions of an R&B star.

In conclusion, I am content with the end product of my photo shoot. I am now prepared to start assembling my magazine and contents page.

Favorite Images

I have collected 5 of my favorite images overall from the photo-shoot. These photos are likely going to be featured in my magazine.

Contents Page

Here are some magazine conventional design features to further my understanding on what a good contents page should actually look like.

Some important factors of a contents page…

>Editors Hello
>Page Numbers
>Hyperbole and Superlatives in headlines
>Word and Image cues
>Graphic illustrations and designs
>Magazine name and Mission Statement

Using the techniques above, I will ensure to target my target audience as well as physically possible to make it unique and personal not only to be but also the people consuming my media. The points above will help draw my target audience and i will consider all parts of AIDA to do so.

The purpose of these different conventions is to anchor an audience into what they’re consuming with out there being an overwhelming sensation. Every single feature of a contents page is used to make something unique

Now I have three hand drawn diagram of my contents page to make an idea of the many possibilities in which a contents page can be re arranged.

Some catchy headlines…

>The chill life of Kyla Bradley

>Everything you need to know about Kyla Bradley

>Queen of R&B

>Secrets of an R&B star

Brand Moodboard and Star Image

Having decided on my genre I have  created my mission statement I wanted to explore my brand a bit more and consider the mise-en-scene that would be appropriate for my genre as well as look at other magazine that are using these conventions…

Here is my mood board I created on pinterest to demonstrate key design conventions, color schemes, costumes, make up, hairstyles, poses.

Star and Representation

Another feature of my magazine that is essential to the unique selling point is constructing my star image

Richard Dyer

A STAR IS ASSEMBLED, WE MUST INVESTIGATE THEM AS WE WOULD ANY OTHER FORM OF MEDIA.

Celebrities are both…

.Extraordinary – accomplished, astonishing

.Ordinary – Have a family, exercise, go shopping

Celebrities are both…

.Present – Social Media, Instagram posts, Tweets

.Absent – Featured on TV, Concerts Vlogs/YouTube

Richard Dyer’s Star Theory is the idea that icons and celebrities are created and manufactured by institutions and companied solely for financial gain. He believes that starts are represented to be ‘real people’ experiencing real emotions. Stars are manufactured by the music industry to make money form an audience, who respond by buying their albums, and acting like their idol that the industry have created.

Here is my research about  my R&B star Beyoncé

Using this research I was able to develop my own star, here is a slide share demonstrating the mise-en-scene and poses I will be using to create my cover star.

Production Meeting Agenda

Here is my Product Meeting Agenda for my chosen genre that is R&B, which is required for my magazine. Creating a document for my organization will help me significantly to prepare for my shoot as I have all the details in front of me to ensure nothing can go wrong. Not only does this guarantee that my photo-shoot can proceed effortlessly it means I have more time to make my model look like an R&B star as much as possible.

Branding Ideas + Mission Statement

For my genre of choice i decided to go with R&B. Not only to I enjoy the music genre I, think its a genre i can really get in touch with more then the others on the agenda. I also believe that its a genre I can really express something with, which also makes it more unique and exiting for me.

I decided to call my magazine Bounce as it gives a really happy, up going vibe to it, Just like R&B does. Bounce to me makes me feel calm and uplifted and it ideally sounded perfect to me!

Here is a world cloud I made to brainstorm some words which correlate with R&B to give me a refresh on my genre.
