My Audience Profile

I created a googleslide where I could paste all information about the demographics and psychographics of the population that listen to my genre (Indie pop)’s music. I also included some examples pf Indie pop artists and magazine covers with them starring the front cover.

I used the website YouGov to gather all the demographics and psychographics of fans. Here is the information I managed to find.

When searching, I discovered that most listeners are millenials as this is a fairly recent, trendy genre that wasn’t popular back in the 20th century. I believe most of the fans will be female and individualists, this meaning they are very self reliant and is likely to listen to this music alone.

This will help when I develop my music magazine as its enabled me to focus on the fans’ demo & psychographics, interests and lifestyles so I can now adapt my magazine to their taste.

My next task was to create a dating profile of someone that would listen to my music and take an interest in my music magazine. I made sure they were female, based in the UK and were of millenial age, somebody that I felt I could relate to. I also selected a picture of a young girl off the internet used mini images, buttons, icons, a logo and a pink theme to portray the effect of being a dating profile. This is what I came up with!

Branding Ideas and Mission Statement

My chosen theme is Indie Pop and the name of my music magazine is REIGN

In this lesson we came up with a name for our music magazine and put together a word cloud of things we wanted to portray throughout the magazine. I came up with the name of ‘Reign’ to be the title. I chose this name because I feel as though it suggests a very bold vibe, and also power and authority.

Here is my word cloud with the title of my magazine in bold.

My mission statement: Reign aims to be a trendy, bestselling music magazine among the pop and indie fans. It includes and provides all interesting information including this week’s top hits, interviews from your favourite artists and much more.

So… I’m ready to make some media!

When it comes to making my magazine I need to keep in mind all aspects that make a magazine the best it can be to look as realistic as possible. These include:

  • Camera
  • Mise-en-scene
  • Typography
  • Layout
  • Colours and themes
  • AIDA
  • Blumler and Katz

If I cover all of these, my magazine should be very suited to my target audience.

CAMERA

When shooting my model I will keep in mind the angles which look good so I end up with an image that I am happy with. This is most likely to be a close up as I my model is going to have a detailed hairstyle and makeup therefore I will want this to be the focus of the image.

MISE-EN-SCENE

Mise-en-scene is an importsnt aspect of the music magazine as it covers the whole of Costume, Lighting, Action, Makeup and Hair and Setting. This will help me make up and dress my model so she is well suited to my genre and style of music. I am planning on doing a bold and bright hair and makeup look.

TYPOGRAPHY

This is important for especially the masthead and key words on the front cover yet also the double page spread of information as I have to pick an apropriate font that is suited to the theme yet also is legible to the reader.

LAYOUT

The layout of my magazine will be similar to a conventional magazine eg. having the image as the main focus along with the masthead being at the top of the page. I’m doing this because it may appeal to my target audience more if it fits in  with the ‘norm’ magazines.

COLOURS AND THEMES

I am going to explore some conventional and unconventional magazines in order to expand my knowledge in common colour themes and palettes, I am looking to make my magazine as eyecatching and to fit my target audience as best as possible.

AIDA

Attract, Interest, Desire, Action. I will be thinking of my target audience throughout the production of my magazine and what will appeal to my audience the most.

BLUMLER AND KATZ

Blumler and Katz suggested that there were four reasons, collectively known as Uses and Gratification, this theory described consumers and an active audience. These four are Information, Personal Identity, Social Interaction and Entertainment.

My Tour Poster

As we know my genre for my tour poster is rap. I was given the task of making a mood board including some of my favourite rappers’ album covers and tour posters. I made sure the layout was very organised so it is appealing to the eye so I put it in rows. The top 2 rows are of album covers and the bottom 2 rows are tour posters.

This collage will help me and give me inspiration for when I make my tour poster next lesson.

The theme of these album covers and tour posters mostly all include the colour black and the majority of them using a bright colour to contrast this. I will make the background of my tour poster black to portray the conventional colour palette yet it will still be unique in its own way. I will all the headings in bold bright colours and fonts to draw attention and interest to the information. Hopefully people who read this poster will have a desire to attend the tour after viewing this eyecatching, informative poster.

Next I used photoshop to cut out the outline of my model. I then pasted it into InDesign where I added all of the text and created the final copy. Here is my final product!

Finally, I created an evaluation on my tour poster, analysing all aspects of it. Here is my feedback on my tour poster.

My Magazine Front Page Swede

In lesson, we were taught how to use the application InDesign. This is where we made our own copies of some NME magazines, It was really interesting to use all of the tools to create a realistic front cover and I now have experience of InDesign for the future when I make my music magazine. I have gained the knowledge of how to use this so when I make my front cover it should be a lot easier and quicker to create.

I have learnt many skills on InDesign this week. Some of these being how to insert conventional features of a magazine cover. For example, an image and text into the special text boxes you must use on InDesign. Another useful skill I have learnt is how to ‘lock’ an image/piece of text/text box into place; this helped me a lot especially when layering text over an image because it means nothing moves out of place.

It was good to learn all of these skills as I now know how to use the program I will be using when it comes to making my own music magazine front cover.

Here is the original Rihanna NME magazine front cover alongside my recreation of it.

I am pleased with my final product even though it is not perfect. I am happy with the masthead as it took me a lot of time to make it look somewhat similar.

I also like the big ‘Rihanna’ cover line in the middle as I think the font and size is very similar to the original.

Finally I am most pleased with the quote beneath the cover line because I think the placement, font and size looks incredibly realistic to the original.

On the other hand I could’ve worked on the grey gradient in the background, I couldn’t get this fade on the actual image so I just had to make it the background colour.

I also struggled to find an exact font for the masthead to look realistic so I had to find one similar and adjust it by changing the stroke volume, space between the letters and the boldness; the NME letters still are not perfect but I am happy with how it looks nonetheless and I learned how to play with all the fonts.

Here are a few videos that helped me get my head around how to use InDesign and useful tricks like inserting images in cool shapes.

A front cover analysed

This is the front cover of a billboard magazine with Billie Eilish on the front cover. The target audience of this magazine will be Billie Eilish fans who tend to be aged from 13-20 so the teenage years.

The phrase ‘rebel with a plan’ portrays the message of Billie herself being a rebel. This message is also conveyed by the use of all the jewellery she is wearing and the careless look on her face. The fact that the image is in black and white also shows an edgy yet basic side to her. Billie’s favourite colour is black so this conveys her as a person well.

However the word rebel contradicts the word plan also, this is significant as she gives off a very rough look which is similar to her style of music, yet is under control and has a secretive plan.

This time we were allowed to pick our own magazine cover rather than the last task where we were allocated one. I liked this because I could choose one I was more interested in, I could analyse and annotate this magazine a lot more easily as shown in the slide above. I managed to find most of the information about target audience, price, mission statement and the audience psychographic so I included everything I could find into this poster to make it as informative as possible.

I also made the background of my slide the same colour as the ‘billboard’ masthead, this was to make the overall look of the slide more attractive and tie together well.

Audience Profiling

This week we’ve been looking at demographics psychographics and target audience. In class, we were put into pairs and given the front cover of a magazine. Mine was ‘vibe’ magazine with Kendrick Lamar on the front. We were asked to find other artists similar to Kendrick Lamar, his target audience and which gender listen to him more, the mission statement of vibe magazine and also facts on the you.gov website in order to find out his ratings and statistics etc.

Demographics are the target audiences age, gender, race and other factors including job.

Psychographics being the target audiences traits, beliefs, personality, values, and interests.

When I make my magazine, I will take all of these into account when focusing on my target audience. I will add things that I know people of that age group will want to see and include other things they may be interested in, such as I will name other music artists similar to my genre that my audience might like.

Here is our finished product after finding all our information about target audience, demographics and psychographics of this magazine and the star on the front cover.

Conventional design features of a magazine

There are 2 types of magazine, conventional and unconventional.

Conventional magazines are the bog standard magazines you see everywhere. They have all the features you’d expect a normal magazine to have. These being:

  • Masthead
  • Plug
  • Pug
  • Main cover star
  • Main cover line
  • Captions
  • Cover lines
  • Price
  • Issue date
  • Barcode
  • Freebie

However unconventional magazines are rare and don’t include as many of/any of the features a conventional one would have. This is because they usually have little to no writing on the front cover, aren’t branded and tends to be just one big image; more like how a book would look.

In groups we annotated a conventional magazine and labelled all of its key features. Here is a picture of our work.

When it comes to making my magazine, i’m sure I will choose to create a conventional magazine as most music magazines are this, this is because it will be easier to have a masthead with my magazine name in bold, I can add headings with features of the magazine listed, insert more images and make it as eye-catching as possible.

I’d like to experiment with a few unconventional features too though, for example putting the masthead at the bottom of the page. However I wouldn’t recommend this as they’re meant to be at the top. I will be experimenting with unconventional features to gain experience and the knowledge of how abstract magazines look. I will gain an understanding for what unconventional magazines contain and what the most important features of one are. I will also be able to compare the 2 styles of magazine and conclude by deciding which type of magazine style is my favourite.

So… How can image communicate meaning?

When experimenting with unpicking images, scenes from tv shows in class and even my own pictures I take, I have noticed that every part of the image is talked about and noticed by the viewer. This means the focus, the lighting, the mise en scene and the angle all have a big impact on the overall outcome of the image.

When wanting to take the perfect image, you have to make sure every aspect of your camera (aperture and shutter speed) is how you wish for it to be so the final image is perfect. We watched a few clips in class and unpicked them to gain an understanding on what we need to look for in clips/images for future reference. Many techniques were used such as the camera angle, the movement of the camera following a character and also the mise en scene used in the image. This helped my understanding of how important everything in the shot is.

Now I am able to unpick an image from a scene; to put this into practice, here is an image from the TV show Pretty Little Liars where the characters are trapped in a ‘dolls house’ with a stalker haunting them.

This is a good example of a midshot wide angle. This is because you can’t see the whole body of anyone and everyone fits in the shot so it is a wide angle.

The camera will have had a high shutterspeed in order to not let much light into the image. This is known because of the dark gloomy lighting. The aperture will also be low as the aperture is how much light is coming into the lense.

It will also have been a tracking shot because it will have followed the girls down the hallway. In the scene there was also a few panning shots between the 5 girls and the villain in black who was the other side of the room.

In the foreground there is 5 women looking very confused and scared, this may be because they’re looking out for the figure that is lurking in the background. The very dark gloomy lighting connotes the mysteriousness and tension of the scene.

Now I will unpick the mise-en-scene of the image.

C- The actresses’ costumes are very formal, these being floor length ball gown dresses. This is most likely to portray the fact that they are trapped in a dolls house and are supposedly dressed as dolls.

L- The lighting in this image is noticeably dark, this is intentional to give off a tense, scary atmosphere

A- Acting, the acting in this looks quite minimal due to the nervousness on the girls faces, in the scene nobody really says anything as they’re too focused looking out for the man dressed in black.

M- The makeup in this image isn’t the most noticeable as it is a midshot, however in other images in the scene the makeup is slightly more obvious. For example a few of the girls have dark eyeshadow to emphasise their eyes and to tie in with the style and colour of their dresses.

P- In this scene, there are little to no physical props being used, at least not visible in this image but within the episode props such as beds and teddy bears were visible. However, the man dressed in black in the background could be seen as a prop as he has no speaking lines, he is just a figure.

S- The setting of this image looks almost as if it were taken underground, this is because there is little light entering the building and as if it were coming from the roof. It looks like a spacious building because of the long never-ending hallway they are standing in. This setting makes the image look more real and as if the girls are actually lost.

The Camera Talks

Once we’d taken pictures around the school in our pairs, we chose the best 9 to explore further. I put my 9 favourite images onto a mood board so I could then annotate the images in detail.

We were asked to put 3 hashtags below each image; one with the type of shot the image is eg. a close up, one with the denotation of the image (what it is), and the last one with the connotation of the image, the hidden meaning.

Here is my 9 favourite images along with my creative hashtags.

The images that match its hashtags with the picture well are image 1 and 4. I like the first one because of the use of the props (the hand and the padlock) and also the lighting as it is dark and mysterious; so the connotation of this image could be very deep.

However I also like image 4 as it is not a close up in focus shot like the rest of the images, it is an action shot and is very effective. The hashtags assist this image to be questionable as the connotation is ‘#Escape’ leaving the audience confused as to what they are running/escaping from. This task has enabled me to unpick images and think about the hidden meaning in great deal.

When making my magazine I may include an action shot because of how effective my action shot image has turned out. Experimenting with the camera has enabled me to explore all the different types of images I can take, and allowed me to explore new angles and movement. I will keep these skills in mind when it comes to shooting and making my own music magazine.
