Masthead designs

To explore how I am going to create my magazine further I compiled an Indesign page of fonts which I like the most for my magazine cover.

Reflection:

Mastheads are extremely important for branding and selling a magazine as it is the first thing that the audience read and it is one of the components which determine whether the magazine will sell, along with the image, theme and colours the masthead usually ties all of the themes together as the font goes with the magazine genre and the colour emphasizes the genre further. If the magazine is about happy disco music the masthead would be bright and bold however if the magazine is about heavy punk the masthead would be dark in colour and dull. The masthead reflects the genre and tone of the magazine, therefore it is very important to choose a font and colour that conveys the conventions of you magazine. This is because it is what gives the audience an insight into the magazine and what it is about. I highlighted my current favourite font for my magazine in red as I think this masthead font goes well with my theme; this is because it is a Serif font and Indie is edgy and the font that I have highlighted I feel reflects that and will look good as my Brand name for my magazine and masthead. The connotations of the font that I have selected are that it is edgy and different which fits perfectly with my genre and my magazine because Indie is about edgy and I think with shadowing and a bright colour it will fit perfectly with the ideology and themes that I am trying to put across. This will ultimately attract my target audience and also fit in with the conventions of my magazine.
