My Tour Poster

I researched for my tour poster by learning the different aspects which would regularly be seen within a tour poster for the music genre of POP. I noted that a lot of the time the colour palette which was very bright and attached the eye, large stylised fonts and the tour dates listed out, studying these different aspects of a POP tour poster helped me accurately represent a POP poster with my tour poster, this means that my work would be believable within the context of the POP music industry.

Some of the main aspects of a POP tour poster than I have taken note off is that:

  1. They use a bright colour palette, usually to advertise the tour as exciting and fun which will make people want to go.
  2. A range of stylised fonts, usually in bold with a unique font design.
  3. A main cover star which will be represented on the poster as the main advertisement.
  4. Bright filters in order to seem attractive to the eye.

When I made my poster I decided I wanted to follow the bright aesthetic with a rainbow theme, due to this I made the decision to use the photos taken in my rainbow coat. This is made clear in my final design where the rainbow aesthetic is mixed into the font and background image. I hope the fact that the font for the tour dates being rainbow will give a desire for people to attend the tour.

My final design:

I believe I achieved the aspects of a tour poster which I wanted to achieve, by matching the colour scheme of which I had originally intended, having the rainbow gradient on the tour date text. Hopefully in future the experience of making this tour poster will help me upgrade both my photoshop and InDesign capabilities as making this tour poster taught me to use gradients and how to make shapes.

My Magazine Front Page Swede

Three positives of recreating the magazine cover:

  • It taught me the best way’s to resize and stretch text to try to recreate a font that wasn’t at my disposal.
  • I learnt how to import and find different settings on InDesign
  • I learnt the importance of having shapes on a page in order to separate different sections of text.

Three negatives of recreating the magazine cover:

  • The correct fonts were not at my disposal
  • The correct main cover star picture was not at my disposal which created issues with the spacing on the page such as a shadow getting in the way on the right stopping the photos of David Bowie from being close to the text.
  • Certain shapes would lock and would not unlock therefore I had to find alternative ways of moving them.

These tutorials show some of the ways in which I had imported images and shapes into InDesign in order to successfully recreate the magazine cover.

Reflection:

Over the last week I have been learning to use “InDesign”. This has taught me many things about the creative process of making a magazine cover and the many aspects it must include. This was my first time using InDesign and I have learnt to use a multitude of different tools in order to make the key conventions of a successful magazine cover. For the magazine cover I was recreating there were many cover lines that needed to be recreated. The most challenging part was creating a masthead that would match the original due to the lack similar fonts to the original magazine cover, however using spacing I was able to make a different font look very similar to the NME logo. Another issue was that the main cover star image, which was the first thing I imported, was a different one to the original and therefore it was impossible to make certain things line up without stretching or distorting the image.

I have discovered that InDesign is an efficient way of creating a poster, this will aid me in future because it will mean that when I come to create my own magazine cover that I will already be familiar with the tools of InDesign. Due to this being my first attempt on InDesign, certain aspects such as the distance between letters may not be completely accurate, if I was to attempt to recreate another magazine cover I would try to rectify this.

The Camera Talks

Introduction:

This is a mood board I created in order to show off some angles I had learnt when framing using a camera:

Reflection:

My aim was too capture story with each photo I took using different camera angles and skills. I used canva in order to make the collage of which is presented below, this collage presents a look into the story I was trying to tell using the hashtags in the corner of each photo along with an explanation of which camera angle I was using when. For example, in my collage I show off some long shots, close-ups, canted angles, also low and high angles.  I had also learnt that the distance that I hold a camera away from the subject helps portrays the emotion they may be feeling. For example, if I do a long shot I may be able to show the character is lonely or is alone or if I do a close-up I may be able to show how a character is feeling tense or scared. Now that I have learnt this I will be able to apply this to my future shoots as it will help me show a narrative through my photo. I had also learnt the Rule Of Thirds, I felt that mise-en-scene was best communicated when this rule was applied along with the angles I selected. For example, if I wanted a photo too look happy, for example the canted long angle has a girl waiting I wanted to make sure sunlight was coming through the tree and that the model was smiling or if I wanted to create a negative image I made sure the shadow was facing us and the model looked sad in the high angled, lonely, longshot. I feel that I accomplished these aims.

Now that I know more about composing an image I feel confident that in future I will be able to create a narrative through a photograph.

My image that uses mise-en-scene to communicate meaning.

This our research into the music genre of POP. We looked at different elements of mise-en-scene and used Padlet to display this like a wall. We looked at the different aspects of a POP albulm cover, this includes the colour scheme and the look of the pop star.

Made with Padlet

The costumes we chose were based on a series of images that we saw on the front of POP album covers, for example The Beatles. In one album cover they sported bright eye-catching outfits. So for one of the costumes we decided to replicate this with a multi-coloured coat. For some photos we added some similarly coloured sunglasses.

Another costume was of a huge fur coat, this was is similar to the stereotypical outfit worn by pop artists in the 70s sow e thought it would be a striking outfit to choose.

A third outfit of choice was an army-like uniform jacket, we chose this jacket because we felt it was similar to the Beatles cover photo with the bright jackets. However this jacket was black so it wasn’t completely similar.

One more outfit we chose was a messy suit, we did this as we found when researching POP artists from today, some artists such as Justin Bieber would be dressed in a rebellious manner so to give a similar vibe we made me look like a maverick.

In reflection: I feel that after taking these photos I have developed a further understanding of how to take photos to represent a character. When I take photoshoots in the future I will ensure to use mise-en-scene and thing about what the lighting, setting and costume all represents and how this effects the conventions in media. This allows the media to communicate to the correct target audience.
