Music Video Form and Conventions

When an artist releases a new song in the modern day it is standard to for many artists to release a music video alongside it. To help create my own music video I have deconstructed 3 official music videos from 3 different artists to help me understand the general conventions and blueprints of a music video. A music video is vitally important as it can help establish the star image and clearly illustrate what genre the song is part of. Of the three songs I analysed on e of the main things they had in common was a mixture of performance performance and narrative which are generally blended together throughout the video. The narrative usually has something to do with the lyrics as it helps amplify the music and if the song and video have nothing in common then the video can feel disjunctive. The performance is generally done using editing to lip sync the song over the performance to make sure it sounds as the released version of the song does. One way that a narrative is often portrayed in these music videos is in an anachronic form where the video does not follow a strict chronological timeline.

In the future doing this will help me with my music video by allowing me to understand how music videos are made and what camera and editing conventions they generally follow.
