PRODUCTION MEETING AGENDA

Below is our production meeting agenda that myself, Erin and Joe have created as a plan for our first shoot. This is a detailed outline of what each of us are providing for the group whether its a tripod, Camera or a costume, we have worked together to put down our ideas in the hopes of a successful shoot. We will use this throughout our shoot so that we have some ideas to fall back on if it goes wrong.

Star Image – The Performer

Design by Barnaby Taylor The Weeknd Moodboard

From searching the internet for images and news articles that capture the identity of our chosen artist, The Weeknd, we were able to create a rough idea of what he’s like as a person and the way he acts in everyday life. This has helped to create a costume that matched the Mis en Scene of the artist. We chose a simplistic costume with plenty of jewellery which connotes well with the original music video.

By looking for news articles we have been able to clearly understand what our star image is like behind all of the fame. From this we have learnt that he is a bold, unique character who works with charities and helps to support the less fortunate. Although he has suffered his fair share of trauma. In an interview The Weeknd opened up about his past and how he used to rely on drugs to “keep sane”. This is what makes him extraordinarily unique, the fact he has offered to open up about the past and how he has changed his life is inspirational.

Theorist Richard Dyer talks about star image, ‘Paradox of The Star’; conveying such a powerful star image with different components, for instance Dyer mentions how we are all the same and that we live on the same level. For example, we see plenty of famous musicians at the football on the weekend just like many of us, they are regular people, possessing something we do not have which makes them special. These big stars aren’t completely perfect as they may have failed at things, such as their driving test – this failure happens to many others worldwide. However these stars are exceptional at what they do, they sing and dance in a unique and quirky way and that’s what separates the two through visual representation.

PITCH & FEEDBACK

This is the final pitch that our group has produced. It presents the themes and emotions that we wish to convey through our music video. This process has been useful when planning where to shoot and how we can display all the Mise En Scene in the video. We have also noted all of our ideas for the casting and our main star.

Positives:

  • Strong ideas on the setting and location
  • The group has discussed casting and cinematography
  • Decided on a strong colour scheme that connotes with our genre
  • I have found a lifeguard that can assist us with a certain location
  • The ending is good because it creates mystery and tension

Targets:

  • I must ask permission and risk access on of our potential locations
  • Need to consider and plan our outfits to make them stand out
  • I must think of simpler ways to convey emotions in our recordings
  • Must consider a location with natural scenery
  • Consider the costumes and styling

Ultimately as a group we have been able to agree and identify who will play the narrative and who will perform, how our narrative will be structured with set locations and how we can include all of the inspired themes into the video. With this, we as a group feel confident and prepared to shoot for the music video and include as many ideas as possible.-

Perfect Production Group

For this task we set out to decide on each others strengths and weaknesses so that we can analysis and decide what each member of our group would do and how we will spread the workload. For example my strengths are photoshop and cinematography, therefore I will be doing most of the editing whilst my partners Joe and Erin will be performing and filming. This task was useful because we can now set out to plan for each task and decide who will do what.

Visual Shot List

Visual Shot Lists are so important in the process of creating my music video as it has allowed me to gain insight on what repertoire of elements would be best suited to my genre and theme of our group music video. We looked into the different types of conventions/shots that we could use as a group to create an engaging final piece, our music video. Our visual shot list will aid us when we come to create and edit our own music video, we will be able to incorporate these techniques and transitions as a result of familiarising ourselves through research. As a group, we need to ensure that our star image is represented accurately throughout our production using a variety of shots creating a sense of cinematography, this will be possible if we follow our visual shot list as a guide for future references.

Music Video – Close Analysis

A detailed music video is the analysis of a certain music video, being able to identify whether it is narrative or performance or a collection of both. For this particular music video it was fifty percent narrative 50 percent performance. This post was important as it shows that I can now deconstruct the narrative, performance, star image and generic and technical conventions of a music video. This will now help me to inform my own production ideas for the future.

MY MINI PITCH

My final mini pitch talks about my finalised ideas on what I hope to provide to my group and produce within a music video. The music video that I have chose is ‘Love Sick’ by Guernsey born artist Mura Masa. The music video is 100% narrative and portrays a collection of emotions through plenty of individuals. In my music video I would hope to tell a story through a narrative story which conveys with the lyrics. I hope to have a star image that illustrates the lyrics through narrative performance. Although in my video I hope to include some lip syncing because I believe that it will make the video more attractive for my target audience. I also wish to include some montages that capture the suitable emotions of my narrative in open scenery.

FINAL SONG CHOICE

As a group we have decided upon the song: The Hills by The Weeknd. This is a song found in the R&B genre with a backstory and can be explained through an emotive narrative and performance video. After deeply analysing the lyrics we have discovered that it is story of the Weeknd (the artist) falling in love with a women who is having an affair with. However she wishes to keep this arrangement a secret but the Weeknd wants to make it public and be together openly. This song is emotive and will be exciting to film, we will be able to capture emotions easily with great scenery through a narrative performance.

We have chosen this song because we feel that it will be easy to convey the narrative and performance so that they relate to the genre and themes. We have also selected this song because we all show an interest in this style of R&B and feel that we will work collaboratively because of this.
