Music Video – Draft 2

In this task, me and Elliott completed our second draft of our music video. We took our 1st draft and collected feedback to help us improve. We took on board some advice and created this second draft:

All in all, I think this was a good draft and we definitely made substantial progress. For example the edit is now on beat. Although there are

List of improvements:

  • Fill out blank space
  • The office scene needs to be re shot
  • More emphasis in performance side of the music video
  • Use our editing skills to match the clips with the lyrics to give more meaning (performance shots)

Our second draft of our music video, I believe, was a success as we were able to make some good progress in comparison to our first draft. Although we have made progress we have still got many issues but we are aware of them and we are ready to improve even more in draft 3.

Narrative Sheet/ Storyboard

As seen below, Me and Elliott created a storyboard to visualize our narrative plan, This helps us understand what our shots may look like after we have filmed. We will try our best to re create these in our video shoot.

Storyboard

Storyboard

There is a small description under each shot that outlines the scene slightly. This is so we can understand why we have decided to use use the shot and what meaning it portrays. All the scenes outlined in the story board are significant scenes of our music video.

In conclusion, this will help improve our shoot when it come around to actually filming.

Specsavers Feedback

Shortly after we completed our second draft we were fortunate enough to have the professional workers from supersavers. Supersavers is a local business who are industry leaders in marketing. The workers for supersavers are very well equipped with software such as premier pro and after effects. So its safe to say that there feedback is immensely valuable for us.

What they likes about our music video:

  • Use of special effects
  • Good variety of shots

What they would like us to improve:

  • Use a shadow effect in the bunker
  • Use more after effects

Conclusion:

This meeting with the professionals was very helpful as they gave us very valuable information on how we can use edits to improve our video. For example we were shown how to use the lumetri panel (colour effects) to ad meaning to our music video.

We were also shown how mask out the background to make the main character seem smaller than he actually is. This added meaning to the performance and definitely improves our music video.

In conclusion, this little session where we received feedback from professionals was immensely beneficial for our music video and we will definitely attempt to use the techniques we were taught.

Music Video – Teacher Feedback

In this task I received feedback from my teacher on my second draft of my music video.

This is a very valuable task as peer feedback in general can point out improvements that you may not point out yourself. But with a teacher, you get an experienced peer who knows what works and what doesn’t.

Audio Feedback:

Targets for improvement:

  • Re shoot office scene
  • Fade the colour into black and white rather than snap into a new scene
  • Consistent transition when time and scene changes
  • Re – order performance
  • Delay the ‘ falling ‘ scene
  • In the tunnel don’t walk back
  • When panning don’t then pan back
  • More emphasis on the gun

From receiving this feedback it is clear to me that we need to reshoot that office scene for many reasons. First of all the framing is poor as half the time you cant see facial expressions witch is quite poor. So a complete reshoot would rectify this issue.

Another key change will be in the ‘gun’ scene. Mr. Gregson pointed out how significant the scene should be. So next draft I will aim to use the power of the edit to portray the significance of the gun.

Detailed music video analysis

In this task I completed a detailed music video analysis on the song, The is called the pretender by the foo fighters. I looked into details for features such as camera angles, MES and performance.

Click Image below to access full document:

All in all this task was very useful to me as I now have an understanding of how professional artists use features such as camera angles and MES to represent meaning. I can use this information in my own music video so I would consider this a transferable skill.

Narrative Development

In this task, we created a form describing our narrative. This essential works as a plan for our shoot and our overall music video. This was very helpful as we can now visualized our ideas better and we understand it is important to plan before you execute. The narrative is the majority of our music video so it is crucial to plan our MES and to have an understanding of our scenes

This task was very useful to complete as I have a clear plan for my narrative so when it comes to shooting the video I have a clear plan set. This prevents me from going in blind to the shoot and if I have any trouble mid shoot I can refer back to this document.

Music Video Draft 1- Rough Cut

Embedded Video- 1 min of lip synced performance:

This was our groups very first rough cut of our music video. In this draft we had a strong focus on narrative so we attempted to portray the star image and express our key themes such as depression and failure.

Self Assessment:

In conclusion, our first draft was plain and simple. We added a few transitions and cut the clips to match each other correctly. We also managed to get good quality shots that are well in focus and follow our narrative. We also had a variety of shots. One thing we didn’t want to do is film loads of the same shot but rather get a wide variety and as you can see we managed to do so. Unfortunately the clip is quite short and it is around 45 seconds long but we do intend to add a lot of performance into the edit in later drafts. Also most of the narrative is in 1 room and we would eventually like to film more narrative outside of this one room. But all in all, i think this was a successful first draft and in the future we can add and improve on it.

Targets for improvement:

  • Get more overall footage
  • Colour correct some shots to portray are star image better
  • We also need to attempt to show more emotion in the acting so the media consumer can understand the narrative better
  • Introduce some clean effects and edits to make the video aesthetically pleasing

Shoot 1 reflection

On Saturday the 26th of June, me and Elliott had our first music video shoot. This was a huge learning curve for us as we ran into some issues but in the end we were able to have a successful shoot. In this shoot we focused on narrative side of the shoot and made sure that we represented our key themes and we represented our so called ‘big’ ideas. We found this challenging at the start but after we added more emotion into our acting we realized this portrayed the ideas much better. This shoot had lots of camera angles and they will definitely be used in future drafts. The variety of shots was definitely a successful part of our shoot and the benefits of having great shots is that you can build upon them as they are great foundations for a good music video.

What Went Well:

  • Got a variety of shots
  • Stuck to the plan
  • Variety of location
  • Props
  • Costume

Improvements needed:

  • Some footage was blury
  • Some poor lighting
  • Lip syncing needs improving
  • Confidence

Intentions for shoot:

Our intentions for this shoot was to collect a wide array of shots that represents our key theme of depression. The actor is using facial expressions that represent sadness. The actors costume also becomes more and more scruffy throughout the video. This is parallel to the emotions of the character and it is reflected in his clothing.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, this was a great first shoot as me and Elliott had the opportunity to use our camera and acting skills, understand what went well and what we could improve on. We understand that we need more shots to fill the music video that our of the high standards of the ones we have already shot. But all in all, this was a successful shoot and with the experience we now know how we can make it go even better.

Shot 2 Reflection

In the past week, me and Elliott, filmed out 2nd shoot for our music video. I think the shot was very good as me managed to get a lot of footage with a variety of different angles and shots.

We learnt how to adapt when using the camera in different locations. This was useful as not only did we shoot inside but we also shot outside meaning there are different circumstances when recording. First of all, outside was vey bright and therefore we had to adapt the brightness on the camera before shooting. Also outside ever shot was shot on a tri pod because of the windy conditions.

When we shot inside we could shoot a few shots hand held as we were in a controlled environment. Learning that you have to adapt the way you film due to your conditions and I will take this information with me for any other shoots.

We also followed our plan before the shoot and we attempted to stick to it as much as we can. But we also used some shots that we though of on the spot. I think this is a good thing as not only should you follow a plan but if you see an good shot then by all means shoot it.

The planning documents were followed as much as possible and we found them to be very helpful. The costume matched our plan and our performance ideas were also transferred from a plan to the real thing.

Visual Shot List for Shoot 1

In this task me and my team created a padlet with sots we would like to include in our first music video shoot.

See below our document:

This task was very useful as we had clear idea of what shots we think are effective and ones that we will attempt to use in our very own music video.

All of the shots seen in the Padlet above our cut from a music video meaning each of the shots has a significance. When we shoot our video me must have meaning in each shot. As you can see under each picture we have labeled the type of shot and the effectiveness of the shot.

With this information on the Padlet me and my team have a clear plan for our shoot regarding specific shots. This task was very helpful for this exact reason.

The most useful part of this task is that I now actually have a better understand of the variety of shots in a music video, this is incredibly useful and I will be using this information forward. Also adding the description of each shot tells me exatly what the shot is, how to film it and what it portrays. This information is very valuable and I will reference back to it often.
