Shoot 2 Reflection

Our narrative shoot went very well in my opinion, in which we gathered lots of close ups and action shots to put in our video to make it make sense.

Here are a couple of images of behind the scenes of this shoot. The first one being Faris focusing the camera when shooting the extreme close up of Millie’s eyes which is shown in our video narrative storyboard. This photo proves we did this shoot to gather the most advance shots possible, making sure we took our time to get the exposure and focus of the camera correct so we could complete getting these shots in one shoot.

The second image shows us as a group as a whole, participating in creating the prom-posal poster to be time efficient and so we were all included in providing the mise en scene of the narrative shoot

What went well:

  • We got all the shots we had planned to get (and more!)
  • We all had a turn at filming different shots
  • We used each other as props for keeping the poster up when ripping it

Targets:

Seeing as we aren’t doing another shoot and this is our final one, I am suggesting targets for when we put it into Premiere pro and begin editing it, so these are some targets for improving the shots when editing;

  • Colour correct some of the shots to match our already colour corrected video
  • Edit quickly paced when ripping the poster to make it more effective and portrays anger
  • Use the extreme close ups frequently throughout the video to have a running theme of her angry eyes, maybe colour correct these so the brightness of her eyes pop to match the previous clips in our draft 1.

Design skills 2

The last few lessons working towards the deadline of our music video and our draft 4 being uploaded, we found a technique which worked perfectly for getting the colour correction shots identical throughout the whole video to portray the genre and our star perfectly. The method we used was saturation curves to eliminate colours we didn’t want in the shot, and to enhance the colours we wanted to exaggerate to portray the message of the narrative further.

In the document, i’ve included a screenshot of what our saturation curve looks like, to show the colour spectrum of colours we did and didn’t want. This is a really useful tool that I have learnt that I didn’t know how to use a few weeks ago.

Another skill I have learnt while browsing indesign is how to use an adjustment layer, which turns all the clips beneath the layer to identical. Examples of why you’d want to make everything under the adjustment layer the same being;

  • If you wanted the same effect on lots of different clips eg. shadows
  • If you turn the saturation and colours up on your clips, it helps to make them look symmetrical
  • Cool graphics on the video, eg lyric fonts/drawings
  • Frame borders

Figuring out how to use the adjustment layer was very helpful to mine and Millie’s video, especially with the pink theme to help convey the narrative and colour scheme of the star image, and this skill will be very beneficial to my knowledge when working in premiere pro in the future.

Production for Shoot 2

Here is the production meeting for shoot 2 in the white studio at school, we are using the same props, costume and everything mise-en-scene as we just want to sharpen up our original shots to make them better.

There is a list of equipment and props we need to bring to remind ourselves not to forget anything for the shoot.

Shoot 2 Risk Assessment

Here is the risk assessment for the final shoot which I am shooting in school on Tuesday 15th September in the White Studio.

We assessed everything that could be a risk to us when filming these shots. The aim for us for this shoot is to re-film shots that we want to perfect in the studio using the professional lighting and equipment to make these shots the best as they can be.

Video Narrative story

Today we prepped for a second shoot in which we would film a few narrative shot. Even though we have a complete first draft with lots of shots, we feel it would be beneficial to gain a few more even if we don’t get round to using all of them.

We are planning on getting a lot of close ups (top left box is an example) because we feel these are extremely effective in videos and this way we will have a wide range of distances within our videos, from extreme close ups to extreme long shots using the drone.

Other shots and angles we are going to add to give a variety of camera shots:

  • We are getting a zoom in shot as the model walks away with the ripped up poster for dramatic effect
  • We will pan the bottom left shot as she walks across the frame to add some non-static shots
  • We will film a few low angles of the model ripping the poster as we need more angles throughout the video and it will look effective

Here is our storyboard containing 9 shots that we are going to shoot in the white studio as part of our narrative.

Narrative development

We made a google document containing the narrative development of the storyline of our video. Including the disruption, resolution and the new equilibrium as the video progresses.

In this document we have highlighted the structure with certain clips. So the ripping of the prom proposal poster shows the audience the disruption and problem of the video; in this case, anger and unwilling to love.

Some other shots that we are going to be filming during this shoot is some close up shots of her clenching her fist, batting the prom poster with her bat to portray anger again, extreme close up of her frowning; hopefully these shots will help portray our ‘hating love’ theme throughout the video.

These narrative, angry and emotional shots are what we are going to be filming in our shoot 2.

Reflection of Summer Shoot

Our summer shoot went very well in my opinion as we achieved everything we planned to and came up with even more ideas whilst shooting which made the shots even more effective. We had the perfect weather for our shoot which really helped us continue to come up with ideas and was ideal for filming out drone shots!

Here are 2 screenshots from the footage we took on the drone, the first one is from above the fairy ring of Millie skipping around which looks great; and the second image is of Millie rollerskating over the camera. We used the drone camera to film the rollerskate shot because the focus was better than on the canon camera.

In this next shot it shows the angle of which we filmed our pink landscape shot, we used the sunlight effectively so theres no shadows on her face.

Overall I am very happy with how this shoot went and I think the shots look very effective alongside the shots from the first shoot, in our draft 2.

Although this shoot went so well and we now have enough footage, some targets for our next shoot however is to get a few more narrative shots.

Design skills 1

Here is my first in depth explanation of the skills I used in premiere pro whilst colour correcting and editing my music video (draft 1) I have put together a google document.

In the first image is the unedited clip, with the pink filter which we put over the lens so the clip is permanently pink; because this was quite blurry due to covering the lens with a sheet, so we sharpened the image, brought out the blacks of the image to enhance her makeup and facial expressions.

In the second image it shows the curves that we used and were trialing and testing which were a good experiment as they didn’t work as well as using the colour wheels which we eventually used for the final draft.

The final 2 images are the development of how far we’ve come using the saturation tool, as shown in the bottom image it is very overexposed and too saturated as her facial features are way too pink. The 3rd image is the final improved colour corrected image, with the perfect amount of saturation in certain areas.

It was one of our main themes portrayed throughout the video for Millie to be pink as this was her star image for her to look extremely girly, so we had to portray this some how in every shot. In our feedback from other media students, this shot was criticised for being over exposed, so it was very important that we nailed the colour correction.

Here is a tutorial showing how to use the lumetri colour effect on clips within premiere pro. The first half isn’t useful but towards the end when he uses the curves and the exposure tool is where we learnt how to use curves to eliminate the greens and yellows from the clip so we had a purely black and white background but the model herself was still the pink and purple colours to make her stand out.
