Shoot Evaluation – Performance

We shot the performance part of our video and this post is an evaluation of how that went and what I will do differently in future shoots

High points to the day

  • Our performers were enthusiastic and did what we directed them to do, this meant for more interesting shots.
  • We used two DSLR cameras these created good quality shots and having two meant that we could film two shots at the same time, overall saving time and allowing us to get more filming in the time we had. We had one on a tripod and the other on a steady cam this meant that we had a variety of camera angles and distances as well as many movement shots (which fit with our genre).
  • Me and Leonie arrived earlier than our performers in order to setup for the shoot and plan our shots in the setting, this meant that when they arrived as much time was spent filming as possible.
  • As a thank you for our performers we brought chocolates and pizza and although this meant we were there for longer it kept the performers excited and interested throughout.
  • Our lead singer also arrived earlier which allowed us to spend time getting the close ups with her and meant that we got more shots of the lead singer which is important for our video.

Targets for future filming

  • Without realizing I think we changed the lighting as the hatch was closed during the shoot meaning we there was more work to do in the edit with changing brightness, next time we will make sure not to change it.
  • One of our performers doesn’t go to our school so it was a bit difficult to organise things with him in future I will only have performers that I am around often so can easily organise things.
  • One of the initial close ups of our lead singer was blurry which we didn’t notice until after filming. Because of this we will need to re-shoot with her in order to have enough close-ups.
  • In some of the movement shots some objects not for music video got in shot, we will in future make sure that the whole area around is clear.

Music Video – Shot List – Performance

We created a reverse shot list for our performance shoot. We took screenshots from music videos of the same genre as ours: Alternative rock. These are of shots that occurred often that we have decided we would include shots that are conventional of the genre in our music video. This will help us to know what shots we need to get and how to make sure our music video is similar to music videos of the same genre.

Location Recce

Me and Leonie went to our location before the shoot in order to plan out where we would film and to set up therefore saving time and meaning we are better prepared for the shoot.

The three pictures below show the location of the performance part of our music video. We liked the remote run down setting of the upstairs of the barn and we thought it fitted well with the alternative rock genre. We have decided to move the drum kit in front of the wooden beams as it provides an extra interesting image in the frame. We are also planning on possibly getting shots of the set up by having all the band members walk up the stairs shown below.

While we were looking at our location for our performance we also thought that some of the places might work well for the narrative as we are planning on using a series of shots in different locations that symbolize her being trapped and isolated.

Music Video – Risk Assessment

We made a risk assessment where we considered all the risks for the filming of our performance, this is important to consider the possible dangers. This shall prevent any harm to our performers or ourselves. We will be filming on the Sunday 25th of September in my grandparents barn, here we have assessed the risks with the location.

Music Video Planning – Narrative/Performance Timeline

We planned our Music Video with a performance/narrative timeline, this told us how many of what shots we needed to get and how we were going to divide the song between narrative and performance. We realized that we would have to cut between many different shots and between the narrative and the performance quickly as the song is of a fast pace. We also noticed that the number of shots we had planned wouldn’t cover the length of the song, especially with the narrative as we planned to have the parts of the costume put on at the beginning however it will look better if stretched out throughout the song building to a reveal of the puppet.

Music Video – Audience Ideologies

I created a Facebook profile for a target audience member. I considered the demographics of the audience member as well as looking at the psychographics. I was looking for a audience member who would have the preferred reading of my music video accepting the ideas encoded in our music video. I’ve also thought about situated culture and cultural experiences of the audience member. This will help me to understand what I need to include in the music video and what the target audience members are looking for in the video.

Music Video – Genre Analysis

Leonie and I have created a narrated presentation about the genre Alternative Rock using Soundcastify. We looked at the genres repertoire of elements so that in our music video we got the conventions of the genre right in order to keep the contract with the audience. In order to keep the predictable pleasure for our target audience we must follow the blueprint of the genre.
