Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

To make a successful music video, it is important lip sync correctly, have a variety of shots and line up with the genre conventions of the song. Here is a short segment of our rough first draft music video that aims to align with this criteria.

Editing Self Assessment:

  • Editing is going well because we have plenty of shots to choose from
  • We all have similar editing ideas so there isn’t much disagreement
  • Good variety of shot distances
  • Good editing to the beat
  • It looks realistic like we are actually playing the song
  • Well Synced

What to improve on:

  • Some shots are out of focus
  • Singer hidden by mic sometimes
  • Lyrics were forgotten
  • Lighting could improve to make it less grainy

Shoot 1 Reflection – Performance

The first shoot for our music video was for the performance section. Whilst planning our shoot, we made plans to get a variety of shots, using the correct MES, as well as planning what equipment we needed to bring. Although we planned for the day, things don’t always go as planned.

What went well:

  • Brought all the right equipment
  • Overcame obstacles well
  • Completed in allocated time
  • Worked efficiently and didn’t take many breaks
  • Everyone knew what they were doing

What went badly:

  • Forgot to charge the camera
  • Had to change locations because of a lack of space
  • Made a decision on a location very late
  • A lot of time wasted waiting for equipment
  • Some disagreements on MES choices

Targets for next shoot:

  • Ensure we have all equipment prepared beforehand
  • Have a look at the scene prior to the shoot and evaluate if there is enough space
  • Plan time more efficiently

Star Image

Creating a mood board for my star image, alongside annotating the pictures with relevant adjectives, has helped me gauge what kind of vibe and conventions to include in my music video. The genre of my artist ‘Citizen’ is primarily pop punk, but with darker hints which is slightly unconventional to classic pop punk. This is why creating a mood board is so essential because it can help differentiate this sub genre from others in pop punk and can allow us to convey this through the cinematography and editing. The star image must be continued throughout the entire advertising and promotional side of the music in order to create a coherent campaign for the artist and across all products.

Conventional shots for my genre

Prior to shooting our music video, it is vital to identify the key types of shots that are conventional to our genre. The typical cinematography in our genre of pop punk includes shots like close ups, handheld and mid shots mainly to convey a fast-paced, emotional and intimate music video. Through the use of editing we can combine the different shot-types to

dictate the pace of the video, as well as to mould the band to display a conventional star image for our genre.

Going forward, we will take into consideration all of the shots researched above, and give priority to shooting them during our performance and narrative shots to ensure we conform to the genre conventions and convey the correct star image

Final Pitch to Teacher

Having a conversation with our teacher has provided us with feedback and allowed us to question our ideas for the music video and helped us decide what changes are necessary to make.

The feedback given was;

  • Our setting was relevant to our genre and will help convey the genre and themes in our video
  • We need to make sure that all of our performers are wearing different clothing whilst maintaining the same aesthetic and linking them together
  • Make a final decision on our shoot location to avoid being unprepared
  • Make sure we have all props ready (as we are using a few) before the shoot to make it more organised

Final Song Choice

Song: Jet by Citizen

Reasons for choosing

  • Fits with edgy vibe whilst also having a soft edge to it
  • We have the facilities and actors to carry out our idea effectively
  • Appropriate song length
  • The lyrics have a meaning that can be amplified easily by a music video
  • The setting for the video would be unrecognizable to other people living in the same area which will give it a more professional look
  • We already have a basic plan for it – see embedded below
