Chosen Adverts

I have chosen these adverts to feature in my music magazine based on their relevance to my demographic of teens/young adults that will be interested in alt culture. Dr. Martens is a conventional piece of alternative fashion and are the leading brand in the boot market. Boots are usually the primary choice of shoe for people who listen to metal and alternative music so the advert would be fitting.

As well as this, I have chosen 7 string Ibanez guitars to feature in my magazine. This is due to Ibanez being such an important and iconic guitar brand in metal music. To make the advert even more specific, I have chosen to advertise 7-string guitars due to extended range guitars becoming increasingly prevalent in modern metal music, compared to ordinary 6 string guitars. A lot of metal music listeners also happen to be musicians as well so advertising a guitar brand would work well in a metal music magazine.

Complete Magazine Draft 3

What’s new?

  • Cover star photo edited and cut out more cleanly

  • Another snake added in contents page to fill some more space
  • Band name in English on DPS
  • ‘Q&A’ added on DPS
  • The questions on the Q&A are pushed in a bit so they wouldn’t be cropped out of the magazine

  • Bigger masthead
  • Bring ‘Oscar from Ghost’ closer together
  • Coverlines on the left smaller and more involved in the story
  • Add price and edition
  • Page number
  • Make photo link to story
  • Continuity with ten56.
  • First para bigger bolder font
  • Drop capital second paragraph
  • make question on the left line up better

  • page numbers
  • move down q&a
  • make ghost the logo
  • meet the band a bit higher

2nd Draft of DPS

After spending some time criticising my double page spread and finding things that I’d like to change, I gave it another go to get my second draft.

What’s new?

  • I changed the image on the right to a more engaging image as well as editing it to demonstrate photoshop skill
  • I changed the background from a black one to a dusty one as I thought the plain black was a bit boring
  • I changed the layout of the title and made it bigger
  • I moved the questions so they didn’t get cut off by the double page
  • I added Japanese writing into the title to carry on with the modern metal theme

What’s next?

  • Try and make the text more legible
  • Add the band name ghost in English somewhere as it is currently just in japanese
  • Add some more text to the right side to give more content

2nd Draft of Contents Page

After spending some time criticising my contents page and finding things that I’d like to change, I gave it another go to get my second draft.

What’s new?

  • I changed the background to a different dust/noise image as I found the one I had before to a bit tacky and made my cover look like a pop music cover.
  • I restructured the design a bit to fill up more space
  • I added more contents because it was minimal and didn’t have enough pages
  • I added different images and a more interesting, highly edited picture to capture attention
  • I added Japanese writing and a snake into the background to make it more visually appealing and modern

What’s next?

  • Blending the images better in the background
  • Making the font more legible
  • Filling in the gap in middle

2nd Draft of Front Page

After spending some time criticising my front page and finding things that I’d like to change, I gave it another go to get my second draft.

What’s new?

  • I changed the background to a different dust/noise image as I found the one I had before to a bit tacky and made my cover look like a pop music cover.
  • I also flipped the cover star horizontally.
  • Added new cover lines which talk about other bands in the magazine and not just the cover star.
  • The masthead was adjusted to make the smaller writing closer to the main masthead
  • Added more purple to give more variety in colour

What’s next?

  • Editing the cover star
  • Cutting him out better
  • Potentially rearranging the composition
  • Changing the pug

1st Draft of The Double Page Spread

This is the first draft of my Double Page Spread for my music magazine. The article I’ve chosen is in the style of a Q&A.

What I like:

  • How the questions are placed on the page
  • The stroke used on the fonts
  • The article itself is well written and engaging

What I need to work on:

  • Add insets
  • Edit the photo
  • Experiment with different colours to see which combination work best
  • Find a way to utilise the entire page instead of half of it just being the photo
  • Add different graphics to help it seem more like a music magazine

Second Shoot Contact Sheet(s)

These are the contact sheets from my second shoot. Although I had to postpone my shoot, fortunately, it came out as planned. I got a variety of different shots which will allow me have a wide range of options to choose from when deciding which ones to include in my double page spread whilst also be able to use some insets from the shoot too.

My favourite image from the shoot is this one;

Article First Draft

The unexpected rise of ‘Ghost’

Uk Metal band ‘Ghost’ burst onto the scene with fire and purpose, following their support slot on Dealer’s tour of England, stealing the show from a much bigger band. The Pit caught up with their frontman, Oscar, and lead guitarist, TJ Framps, to get a deeper look into what made for their explosion onto the scene.

TJ Framps and Oscar Torode made some time in their busy schedule to meet with an editor at ‘The Pit’ to answer a few questions on how they made such a strong impression so quickly. The pair had just played a sell-out show in their hometown of Guernsey the night before, a warm up show before flying back out to the Uk for a second run of England due to fans wanting more and more. We met up with them outside of their studio in Vale, where they had some interesting stories to tell.

  • When did you guys start doing music? “We’ve been doing music ever since we can remember. TJ has been playing guitar ever since he was 6 years old and 15 years later, he’s still as obsessed as he was when he started. I’ve has been doing metal vocals since I was 12 but only started doing cleans a couple years ago. We both met at sixth form because we had a few classes together and got talking. We had both been in bands prior to Ghost but we had no projects at the time, decided to have a jam with a bassist and drummer and never looked back.” – Oscar
  • What’s the best moment of your career so far? “The best moment so far has got to be the show in Birmingham. We were playing in a pub with a max capacity of around 400 and we had people queueing outside even once we capped the venue. The bouncers spoke to us after and they reckon we had another 600 people in line to see us outside. It was insane. We had no clue that was gonna happen and it made us realise that people away from our hometown knew about us and wanted to see us. That night was definitely a big milestone because we knew we had some traction but this was something else.” – TJ
  • Advice to new bands? “Get music released. That’s the best thing you can do. Write a few bangers and put out an EP and promote the life out of it, tour it, send it to people, whatever, just give people something to listen to when you’re not gigging. Also, try and get as much original material as possible in your set. There’s only so much covers can do for you in terms of gaining new fans and most importantly, have fun whilst you’re doing it, no point otherwise.” – Oscar
  • Biggest influences? “I used to listen to a lot of ‘Metallica’ and ‘Alice in Chains’ when I was younger and that’s kinda what got me into playing guitar. Just learning their songs and playing them in my room helped me fall in love with guitar and forced me to explore what cool sounds I could make. Those older bands shaped my playing to this day but I think Ghost as a band take a lot of inspiration from bands like ‘Dealer’ and ‘Alpha Wolf’ – a more modern, innovative sound. We strive to create cool new stuff that makes us unique” – TJ
  • What are your biggest aspirations as a band? “Who knows. As far is it takes us. As long as we can positively affect people’s lives with our music, that’s what’s important to us.” – Oscar
  • Any new music coming out? “We were planning on releasing our debut album way further in the future, but now a lot of people have been asking for it, we’re probably gonna bring it forward. We have all the master tracks ready to release, just waiting on the right time” – TJ Framps

Metalhead or not, you have to admire Ghost’s passion and pride in their music, as well as how all of sudden they’ve burst onto the scene and won over so many fans and climbed up the ranks in such a short amount of time. It is definitely worth checking these guys out live – the wall shaking breakdowns and bone breaking pits are something to behold, just be careful, ‘cause these guys are massive.

I then read out loud my first draft and realised there were multiple mistakes that I didn’t notice and probably wouldn’t have picked up on if I didn’t read it out loud. I correct my mistakes and here is my final draft:
