Chosen Adverts

I chose these two adverts because they both appeal to my eye. By adding adverts into my magazine it makes it conventional.

Firstly the Spotify one is the one that is on the second page next to my contents page, I chose this one because it is simplistic and doesn’t compete against my contents page. It also relates to music and is an indicator of where to stream the music talked about in my magazine.

Next I wanted to insert a poster promoting an EDM concert, this directly is targeted at my magazines target audience because they picked my magazine up because they liked the genre EDM and by putting a concert coming up it means that if they’re interested they have all the information there. The neon lights in the poster relates to the neon lights throughout my poster, therefore it fits in with my magazine.

Second Shoot Contact Sheet(s)

LOCATION SHOOT

 \

This is my ordinary location photoshoot, we both went around the school to different location to convey a more natural everyday shoot. By taking these photos it allows the audience to view my star as an everyday person.I am happy with these photos because they turned out nice and clear and capture my whole models outfit.

These are my favourite images from the shoot because they represent miss-en-scene really well.

PHUNKY PHOTO

\ \

These are my images from my Phunky photoshoot, these images are meant to be unusual. I wanted to create a shadow infant of my models face but I didn’t have a strong enough light so I am going to try add a shadow effect whilst editing the image in Photoshop.

These are my favorite images because they are nice and focus so that I can try edit shadows onto her face.

Draft Feature Article

Production Meeting Agenda and Planning for Second Photoshoot

This is my PMA of what I would like my model to wear and what equipment and props I will need to bring to make sure I am organized for my shoot. that my MES, Props, Models and location are all clearly planned and thought through. My PMA will ensure I have included links to a video that gives me a run through of how I can achieve my Phunky Photo successfully. Also I inserted some ideas of backgrounds for my standard photoshoot, I have chosen these because they are related to a concert and I am planning to take a low angle shot so it looks like my star is performing to a crowd.

For my Phunky Photo I need to make sure the room is dark so that the cut outs in the cardboard will reflect onto my models face and create shadows. This will mean I will needed a lot of lighting behind the cardboard so that it shows up on my models face.

FOCUS FORWARD

By doing a PMA it has made me realize what I need to be prepared, I can also use my PMA during the shoot to look back on and stay organized.

Language Analysis

THE ARTICLE

This article is from the Billboard Magazine-June 20,2015 Kacey Musgrave:Country’s Best Frenemy

STRUCTURE

The structure is a review on an album and is laid out in columns and paragraphs. The main cover star is Kacey Musgrave and is identified throughout the text to show her importance.

It is noted that the article is about the 26 year-old critiqued life in small towns like the Texas one she couldn’t escape fast enough, and endorsed well,girl-on-girl kissing and politics she could only describe as liberal. So most of her songs are about her view on social issues.

We aren’t given any background information on the article like when and where it took place however we are given the writer,Rob Tannenbaum and the photographer David McClister.Knowing the author makes it less personal so in my magazine I will keep the author anonymous.

Throughout the article it is written in 3rd person which allows the text to become more relatable to the reader. There is a clear introduction and conclusion so the reader knows where and when to start and stop reading.

I like how there is a larger image of the model and her album cover is featured within the review.

What is your sense of the location / event / person that the journalist is writing about? How is this achieved?

The writer uses phrases such as ‘gloriously provocative’,’mellow anthem’,’tender voice’ to further emphasis the want to read the review as strong adjectives are used to engage the reader. The main image matches the writing as her facial expression is sad but hopeful relating to the text describing her as being trapped in small towns.

The star is represented as a sign to escape the small city an explore the bigger world- almost giving the reader a nudge to go exploring and enjoy life. The photo of the star almost seems as if she is look out to the horizon and looking at the bigger world. Her body language has a confidence aspect to it but a bit enclosed because she isn’t facing the camera.

FOCUS FORWARD

In conclusion the article relates to the main cover photo to further engage the reader and I now know I will have to achieve that within my magazine so that I can draw in people to read my magazine.

Contents Page Draft 1

Please click on image to see PDF

Above is my first draft of my contents page, I am pleased with it but there are a few details I definitely want to change now I have looked into it with more detail.I enjoy the colour scheme as I goes with the front cover.

PEER ASSESMENT

What type of shots have been used to create a variety of shot distances and how has the camera been used to communicate meaning?

Lani chose to take a mid shot in order to capture both the position of the model as well as the chosen costume to convey its relation to the edm genre. This demonstrates an understanding of positioning and lighting which results in an image that is conventional to her chosen genre.

What choice of Mise en scene is appropriate for the star image and genre?

The outfit worn by the star is bright and bold but is ultimately appropriate for the genre. The usage of the dark shooting room has enabled a mysterious look which fits well with the genre. The headphones are a great feature which convey the genre well.

How far is the font used readable and reflects the genre

The bold, sans serif font is clearly legible and generates an aspect of volume representative of the music found within the genre however lacks variety as the same font is used both for headlines and body text which leads to a lack of variety in graphic design.

What technical conventions of a Contents page are present and used effectively?

Lani has laid it out in two columns with the numbers being bigger and bolder             demonstrating the importance. All of the conventions of a contents page have been highlighted due to the contrasting colours of the background and text colours.

How has Indesign been used to layout the page to convey a brand

The layout of the page leaves a generous yet appropriate amount of space for headlines and body text and the space available has been maximised in order to create a product that is fulfilling but not overcrowded which could drive the reader away.

How well have the text and visuals been integrated together?

The colour palette of the images and text parallel nicely with contrasting tones and there is an appropriate amount of space consumed by the text however it seems to overpower the image. To fill the empty space near the top you could enlarge the cover model bringing the text upwards to fill the space.

Where has photoshop been used to manipulate the photos to enhance the star image or genre?

Photoshop has been used to cut out the cover star and brighten different features such as the skin and hair.

How is the language used appropriate for the genre and target audience?

The language used is appropriate for the genre and the target audience will be able to identify it with the repetition of the genre.

Strong, clear, good, conventional

Low B grade

5 TARGETS I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE:

  • Change the font as it is overused making it boring to look at
  • Change the number colours to add extra effect and interest to the eye(silver?)
  • Move everything up to fill the space and make the model bigger
  • Add a page number (3)

FOCUS FORWARD

In conclusion I need to add more detail into my cover lines to further emphasis the AIDA(Attention, Interest ,Desrire, A call to Action) to help draw attention to my target audience.

Contents Page Planning

In a magazine the contents page is the index of your magazine. The contents page offers a list that outlines what is included in a magazine, this is very beneficial for a reader as they know what they will be reading and it is important to make the contents page attractive and catchy so that the reader will want to read on.

I researched different content pages to ensure that my contents page fits my genre and that it will attract the appropriate audience.I remembered to consider AIDA(Attract,Interest,Desire,A call to Action) and Blumler & Katz (Entertain,Inform,Social Interact,Personal Identity) whilst researching content pages so that I can make sure it fits my genre perfectly.

After researching I picked out 4 designs I liked the most and drew the out, I combined a few so that it fits my genre of EDM. I made my contents pages simplistic whilst still making sure they are attractive and interesting for my audience. I did a simplistic design that didn’t include images but I think images within a contents page draws in people more as they have a better understanding of what they are going to read.I like when the page numbers are bold and bigger than the writing so that they stand out and the audience knows exactly where to look to read a specific feature.

FIVE CATCHY HEADLINES

  • ALL THE SECRETS ABOUT EDM
  • EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEAKS INTO THE WORLD OF EDM
  • HOW TO EDM IN THIS DAY AND AGE
  • THE REASON WHY EDM IS TOP MUSIC
  • SHOCKING NEWS IN THE EDM INDUSTRY

FOCUS FORWARD

I have now realised how important it is to include all the aspects into designing my contents page so that it stands out from competitors and attract the correct audience.I have made a decision on having a simplistic but attractive contents page so that it won’t overpower but will offer the right information for someone who is reading.

Front Cover Draft 1

Please click on the image to see PDF

REFLECTION

My magazine is fun and appealing which will entertain the audience and has information under each cover line so the audience is informed of what is inside. My cover lines have been used as a social interaction for my target audience, however I could insert another cover line including an interview to further increase the social interaction. Personal identity is conveyed through the edgy font I used and the how the use of the bright red theme contrasting with the plain black background.

MASTHEAD, COVER MODELS & DESIGN PROGRAMME

My masthead is the key element to my magazine front cover, I think the ‘V’ stands out as it is the only one filled with a colour, this emphasises the sound of it when people mention my magazine. The white stroke around it makes it stand out and gives it a unique touch. When finding where to position my masthead I wanted to make sure it was a s big as possible so that everyone walking past can see it.I decided to choose another masthead design to the ones I experimented with beforehand as after having a dark background I decided to make the masthead fit the mise-en-scene of my model.

My cover model fit my genre of EDM perfectly because of her costume and hairstyle as they fit the festival vibe I was going for.I chose to do a mid-shot because the top half of my model was more important as it represented my genre in more detail (top, eye make-up, hairstyle) I used the lighting well to make sure my model was visible and it was too light or too dark. However whilst using the camera it wasn’t focused fully on my model meaning the quality of the image wasn’t the best but I managed to use PhotoShop to sharpen the image. This all will stand out to my target audience and meet all the conventions to my genre.

I used the programme PhotoShop to modify my image so that it was sharp to the eye and wasn’t blurry, I also added elements to my image such as skin blurring, lip stick filter and brightening eyes so that the stood out more.I also managed to add a ‘multiple’ layer where it brightened my image.Whilst editing I managed to cut out my image so that I could add a background colour later. Next I added my final PhotoShop image into InDesign where I can add details such as cover lines, mastheads and a barcode.InDesign offers a lot of fonts meaning I could make sure my font really fits my genre.

COLOUR PALETTE, FONTS & MISE EN SCENE

I think I’ve successfully match the colour palette with my genre with the dark background representing the night time rave with a pop of red for pop of rave.I like how the ‘V’ in the title matches with the main cover line and the coverlids showing how important they are.The dark background really brings out my models hair and eyes to make sure they’re bright and bold.

InDesign offered a lot of fonts and I chose one from DaFont as it fit my genre a lot better. In my masthead I made sure it was capitalised and had a stroke around the outside so that it stood out from any other magazines. My typefaces are the same in my cover lines to make sure my magazine is not confusing to read and that my audience can clearly understand.

My costume fits the EDM theme as it is very bold and festival themed, to add to the theme more I added a gilet to fit the DJ theme and added accessories like rings, sunglasses and headphones. My models make up is a subtle purple eyeshadow with a gem on the inside corner of her eye to add a pop of colour. Her body language is confident with a firm eye contact to further add to the attractiveness and interest of my magazine, it also adds a factor of trustworthiness for the audience to relate to my magazine.

LANGUAGE & MAGAZINE

Th language I chose to use is very effective because they are short sentences full of information meaning it draws in the audience as they don’t need to read lot. Visually it looks effective because not a lot of writing is on my front cover except important information.

My magazine includes majority of the conventional features such as masthead, main cover line, cover lines, cover star image, issue date and barcode.By including all these elements it meant I achieved AIDA(Attention,Interest,Desire,A call to Action) within my front cover.

Things that went well:

  • The red colours contrasting with the black
  • The masthead is bold
  • How I’ve exaggerated the ‘Z’ in her name

Things to improve:

  • Add another cover line including an interview
  • Add price
  • Make the background less empty
  • Make the barcode smaller
  • Make her bigger so it doesn’t look like her arm is cut off
  • Add Neon theme around model

Contact Sheet

Above are my contact sheets, I took my photos in the black studio so that my star image model’s features stood out.My model,Scarlett Mauger, fit the genre of EDM really well because of her bright red hair, this allowed her to stand out and what will make my magazine front cover unique.

I made sure I had a mixture of angles so that I could capture both her costume and her face so that I had a lot of pictures to choose. The different angles allowed my model to do different engaging body language so that the audience feels invited.

What could of gone better;

  • Most of my pictures are out of focus causing the image to be blurry, although a lot of images are unusable some can be saved by using the sharpen tool in photoshop.

This image stand out to me and will be the one I use because of Scarletts body language and how she is looking into the camera, this engages the target audience and makes them feel invited. The lighting is portrayed perfectly as it makes her top shine as if she is on stage performing with stage lighting.I like how her hands are over the headphones as if she is on stage with decks.Although it is blurry that can be adjusted in PhotoShop when I am creating my front cover.

Masthead Designs

Above I used InDesign to create my masthead for my magazine. Now that I have chosen my name for my magazine it is important that it fits the correct conventions for my EDM genre. I used lilac colours to fit the colour theme my model is going to wear. Designing my mastheads I made sure I thought about AIDA so that they can be as affective as possible so that it attracts an audience.

I think I am going to choose the 3rd option because it is simplistic yet bold which consists of the right conventions for my genre.

FOCUS FORWARD

Thinking forward I have now decided what masthead I like and how I will. make it bold and stand out from the other magazines.

Front Cover Designs

RESEARCH

I researched a 10 unique front covers that caught my eye, I like how each one is distinctive and bold.

My top 3 consists of;

  • BAZAAR- This is because the actual front cover model is very defined and dark and then there’s a pop of colour across her eyes and a few titles. This really attract an audience because it is a bold pink that catches they eye.
  • Wallpaper- This is because I like how the front cover consists of 3 different photos of the model but there presented in different angles of her face. This really adds to the uniqueness of the cover therefore making it stand out.
  • PULP- This is because the paint splatter affect really adds a pop of colour making the front cover stand out from others. It contrasts really well with the model and she is in black and white and is wearing a dark plain top. I like how the paint splatter and masthead match in colours, design and effect.

FOCUS FORWARD

By looking at other unique front covers it has now inspired me to recreate a similar vibe in my magazine so it results in my magazine being distinctive and standing out from other magazines.

Production Meeting Agenda for First Photoshoot

Above is my Production Meeting Agenda of how I want my first photoshoot to go. This has helped me stay organized for my first shoot so that it can run smoothly.

I have thought about mise-en-scene whilst completing my document, I focused on listing my costume and make up ideas whilst supporting them with a few images. I have made sure that my costume meets my criteria of EDM music by making it stand out. I have also thought about props of headphones to add to the affect of a DJ.

FOCUS FORWARD

By having a PMA it will allow me to revert back to it when taking my photo shoot and make sure I am prepared and organised before my shoot.

Star Image-Theirs and Mine

RESEARCH

I chose Avicii, who is a famous artist who may appear on the front of my magazine.

I searched the web for his social media posts on twitter and snip tooled them onto a google slide. These individual posts represent my star image. By researching him it has made me realized that the post he makes are conventional and extraordinary compared to other artists. EDM music is very unique and ordinary meaning Avicii fits into the genre of music well.

The denotations of Avicii is that he is very thoughtful whilst posting on social media and his appearance changes when he’s in the EDM environment as you can see he is just in his own world in the images. This leads onto the connotations that the target audience will feel whilst reading his posts or listening to his lyrics. Avicii’s lyrics are very deep and personal which have a meaning behind them, which allows the audience to relate to what he is singing.

MY ‘PERFECT PICTURE’ DESIGN

This shows my ‘picture perfect’ design of how I would present my model if they were in my magazine.Whilst researching about my genre I have thought about all the aspects of mise-en-scene;

  • Costume
  • Lighting
  • Setting
  • Props
  • Makeup
  • Framing and Angles
  • Body Language

I want my model to stand out and have a trance feeling about them so they really connect with the genre EDM. I want my audience to feel that my model is bold and that they are lovable. My model has to be attractive so that my magazine can gain as much interest as possible.

FOCUS FORWARD

I have now discovered that by doing this research I can now look back on it whilst taking my photos in order to make my photos stand out and that they are unique.

My Audience Profile

I used YouGov to research artist within the EDM industry and information on their target audiences, by doing this I found out about what both psychographics and demographics are into. I based my research around 3 famous artists David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Marshmello.

By researching I have figured that EDM audiences are both women and men between the ages of 18-40. Marshmello is a newer artist so he attracts the younger generation whereas David Guetta and Calvin Harris attract millennials as they are wider known. However I believe that fans of EDM are Gen X’s.

FOCUS FORWARD

I have now realised how important researching statistics about the target audience as by applying it into my magazine it will attract the correct target audience.

PERFECT AUDIENCE MEMBER

After my research,I used google slides to make my perfect audience member. I used my research to decode the information into a dating profile. My person is based on someone I know as it makes me reflect easier on how much she is into EDM, by doing this it will mean I will always remember to include specific details in my magazine.

It is important for my magazine to have a preferred reading for my audience and by following the uses and gratification theory (entertainment, information, personal identity, social interaction)  it will result in the reader not having an oppositional reading after looking at my text.

FOCUS FORWARD

I have now realised that it is important for my magazine to have all different forms of social interaction and be able to educate so that my target audience can build their personal identity.

So What Am I Up Against?- The Competition?

REFLECTION

Doing in-depth research has discovered a lot of competition amongst the EDM magazines all fitting the target audiences preferred reading.

Whilst I was researching I found that the correct feature needed to be added so the target audiences interests are satisfied. The competition amongst EDM is large and in order to stand out you need to include AIDA (Attention-Interest-Desire-Action).

  • It need to be attractive so that people will stop what they’re doing and read it
  • It needs to be interesting for the audience so they want to find out more
  • It needs to have a sense of desire so people are desperate to involved
  • It needs to have a call to action so they now where to buy everything

By including these it will result in the audience wanting to be there and reinforcing their personal identity and social interaction.

FOCUS FORWARD

I have now realized that including all these features will make my magazine have a USP(unique selling point) and my magazine will stand out from the other competitors by having all the correct information.

Branding and Mission Statement

For my magazine ‘RAVE’ I will be basing it around the genre electronic dance music (EDM). This type of music is played at nightclubs, raves and festivals. I picked this genre because it is well known and listened to as a lot of people enjoy going to nightclubs and festivals. EDM is directed to an audience between the ages 16-25.

Then I created a word cloud to identify the purpose and contents of the genre EDM. This word cloud is a guide to help me create my mission statement and what words I would use to attract the audience with a few simple sentences. The uses of gratification theory (entertainment, information, personal identity and social interaction) all play a part in drawing the audience in and attracting a wider audience.

MY MISSION STATEMENT

‘RAVE’ is in the top five greatest magazines for those who enjoy EDM. We cover top artists and unreleased songs as well as introducing upcoming stars. Don’t miss out on our behind the scene interviews and exclusive information on tours. Our magazine inspires young adults to realise the tension and express themselves.

FOCUS FORWARD

I have now noticed that certain words have a huge impact on attracting the audience and if you use engaging vocabulary you are certain to gain a loyal audience and have a USP(unique selling point)
