My Tour Poster

Original MES image

Earlier on this term, we learnt about using MES to help create an image that would enable a viewer to look at it and recognize that this image reflected the folk genre. This is one of the many photos taken that day but I chose to use this particular one for my tour poster. Primarily we only included makeup/hair, props, lighting, costume and acting/action but we used a green scene to make it easier to edit in a setting when we made the poster.

This is my edited and designed tour poster:

I included sans serif font for information that I wanted to be legible and stand out such as for the Pug which is proving vital information about the ticket price and also for the main cover line which tells the audience who is on tour and will perform. In contrast I used serif font for the word ‘folk’, this font is traditional and practical which relates to folk music. I used photoshop to cut out the model and replace the background with a beautiful forest as folk is very natural and nature is a big thing for folk artists. The colors are very neutral which reflects to that traditional humble aesthetic.

Reflection

Making my first tour poster was fun and exciting, I learnt how to use Photoshop and incorporated InDesign to complete the tour poster. My background was something I found really resonated with the folk genre; this has given me the idea for my Reggae magazine to incorporate the typical Reggae colors into the background. For my music magazine I will want to do a better job of Photoshop and play around more with the different fonts and effects. Overall this task has made me feel much more confident with using InDesign and now a bit with Photoshop.

My Magazine Front Page Swede

This was the magazine front cover that I chose to attempt to copy and recreate:

This is my copy of the magazine front cover:

Reflection

Today in media studies we learnt how to use InDesign to copy and recreate a front cover of a music magazine. Learning how to use InDesign was a lot of information to process and worked much different than any software I had ever used, but it got a lot more easier to use as I was near the end of my recreation. InDesign had all the right tools to copy the magazine but it was a challenge to find the right fonts to fit exactly.

3 strengths

  • I successfully included all the right information and pictures
  • I was able to identify that the fonts were sans serif and all the fonts I used look very accurate to the original cover fonts
  • I managed to find the same photos as the magazine cover and upload them easily

3 weaknesses

  • I went a little overboard with the shadows behind my text compared to the original magazine
  • The placing of my main cover line was too close to the images on the left
  • In the bottom photo that I added I cropped to much of the image and made the image look more portrait that landscape

My Focus Forward

By copying this magazine front cover it allowed me to get the gist of using InDesign. One major thing I learnt from this task was that I don’t really have to use more than two fonts but I can still change the size, spacing, boldness and color of the text which looks more effective than using loads of different fonts. This task also showed me that I should align my information to either the right side or left side of the page instead of putting my information in the middle as it makes the magazine look more effective and eye-catching as well as it really allows the cover star to stand out which is what I want to do. Lastly one big thing I noticed from this magazine is you don’t need to have too many different colors within the text as the majority of the text was white and only two other colors were used. This is simple but effective as it doesn’t look too crowded or overwhelming to look at but yet it is very encaptivating for me.

The camera talks

Introduction

In media we were put into the same groups as we were in for the mise-en-scene shoots. This time we explored using different angles (high angles, low angles, and canted angles) and shots (extra close ups, close ups, mid shots, medium long shots, long shots and extra long shots) to convey meaning in the photo’s we were taking. We went around the school and tried to include all the different angles and shots we had learnt about.

Here is our mood board of different angles and shots:

2 Best Images

  1. Mid shot, low angle – In this image the model is looking down at the camera and has a good upright posture. The facial expressions portray a lot of confidence and look quiet smug. This gives the impression that this model is a dominant figure. The model is in harsh lighting but their face is shadowed which could highlight that they are quite intimidating and maybe even a bully. The brick wall behind the model also makes this photo feel slightly claustrophobic. This is because this photo also feels like it has been taken as a P.O.V shot to make you feel cornered by this dominant figure. Similarly they could be someone who is a role model that you look up to as an inspirational figure as they look confident and proud from the way their facial expressions are and their body language.
  2. Medium long shot, high angle – The medium long shot focuses on just bellow the waste up, this shows that the half of the body that is the most successful in establishing the identity of this model is exposed. The high angle also makes the model seem very small and vulnerable where as the models hand looks identical to the proportion of the rest of the her body. This suggests that she reaching out as if she is trying to protect herself from something or someone. This is also exposing her vulnerability to show that she has only her gentile soft hands to defend herself and no weapon, this model looks to be in complete surrender to whatever she is looking up at. The hand is also shadowing her face which symbolizes she may be feeling in the dark and have a lot of despair and dread. Lastly we notice that the ground is just plane boring brick. This reminds me yet again that this may be an extremely suppressing place she is in and there is no where to go and nothing to bring ease to this person. It is almost like a school yard which may symbolize that this person is cowering in front a school bully.

Reflection

I would say that I was really happy about how our shoot went. It was very interesting to learn how different angles and shots can give of different feelings and emotions. For example a photo that is a long shot and taken from a low angle can resembles power and dominance and makes people feel either intimidated or inspired by that person they are looking up too. Overall we managed to pick 9 best photos out of our 50 in our mood board and successfully included all the angles and most of the shots to our mood board.

Tour Poster Analysis

This is my analysis of Justin Bieber’s tour post:

Overall Justin’s poster for me has a twisted perception about it. We see he is clearly a good looking guy and is amazing eye candy. The red lighting reminds us of that sexy, romantic atmosphere also. However we can also recognize there is something dark about this poster. He looks to be exposed and vulnerable which makes us feel as though the choice of lighting colour is a sign of warning or desperation trying to reach out for help and attention.

My image that uses mise-en-scene to communicate meaning

Introduction

My Media class was tasked with taking images that included mise-en-scene. First off we were put into groups of three and randomly given a genre of music that we would have to incorporate into our shoot. My groups genre we were given was folk. We began by making a padlock and adding 6 tabs; costume, lighting/colour, action/acting, makeup/hair, props and setting. Then we looked out photos of folk bands for inspiration and dived photos up into each of these categories so we could pan what we would choose to add into our shoot using mise-en-scene.

Here is the planning me and my group made on padlock for the shoot:

Made with Padlet

The costume:

After planning and getting some inspiration me and my group put together the costume and wrote some words on some post-it notes that we felt helped describe the costume and type of music. The words we used to describe our look was humble, traditional, wholesome, rural, quirky and natural.

Here is a photo of the costume and post-it notes.

With this outfit we went for a very down to earth look, with a beautiful flowy long skirt, and a classic panama hat which is very popular amongst folk people to wear. Also the braids give this innocent and traditional vibe to the costume which relates well with folk as its a very traditional genre of music. The jewelry looks very alternative and naturalistic its not full of bling or over the top  so it fits really well with the rest of the outfit.

The 3 best images from the shoot:

1)

I rated this image my number 1 favorite as it feels very laid back and not over done. When I think of folk it reminds me of being modest and natural and implies that this genre of music is made to be very in the moment. The vibe of folk is very chill and loving and I believe this photo does a good job to express that.

2)

This photo is taken from a low angle and the model has her held held high which for me reminds me of a confident person who is and individual. This relays back to folk as it isn’t the most mainstream music but for people who like to see themselves as individuals and stand out from the crowd, then a genre such as folk could help an individual to stand there ground and out of the ordinary.

3)

For the final image I have chosen this image. To me this highlights yet again this very chilled out vibe. The model has her instrument very close to her which shows the passion she has for her folk music. It also shows that folk bands seem very down the earth and not very materialistic as in most photos they aren’t trying to show off anything bling and flashy. Instead there most prized possession is there instrument which to me is a very modest thing.

Reflection

Working with a team was very helpful and fun it was good to have a team effort and the costume came out perfectly. I think the costume reflects the photos on the mood board pretty accurately. The lighting was soft and neutral which was what we were going for it gave a very excellent warm glow which is what I think of when I think of folk as the genre of music makes you feel rather cheery and warm. The actions that were used were extremely laid back and modest this relays many folk banks as they aren’t very over the top or flashy. The braids in the hair and the hat was a classic folk look as well as the natural looking makeup. Lastly including an instrument into the shoot was as good idea as  we got the idea that performers in folk seem to really prize their instruments and the instrument is a really important part. For the future it would me be much better if the shoot included an actual setting just to pull the photo together. I would imagine for folk the best setting for a shoot would be outside either in a field or forest as you see that in many photos the musicians are around or near nature.
