Music Video Final Draft

Overall I feel as if our music video came together pretty well in the end. After multiple shoots to grab some last ditch footage together it’s relatively messy as you would expect however I feel as if everything works pretty well. However we would obviously rather it was a bit neater and better. Despite this we have added our own twists to it which we feel are unique, for example the change of shade and tone to represent the mood during the ‘The Dog Days’ and then after ‘The Dog Days’.

Teacher Feedback – Screencastify

Below is Mr Gregson’s screencastify review of our work, he lists the pro’s and con’s of our current work, stuff we can do to improve and little pieces of advice.

Overall the main message was that he felt as if our work was a bit desperate and rushed together. A lack of structure with it being a bit all over the place, however the shots we have good are good with multiple ranges and different angles used. The mise-en-scene he said is also good and shows the change of narrative well. The use of black and white to show the sadness of our narrative is also effective he feels and makes it a lot clearer.

However we need to make a few things clearer or more signifigant (e.g what book is she reading, how does this make her depressed?). As well as this instead of the depressed stage being sequenced from place to place, show a repititive cycle to show how every day was the same and show how depressed and bored the star is.

As we transitioned into our happy scenes when the ‘Dog Days Are Over’ this is where we need to sequence it more and have different ‘chapters’ almost. However this is the section that we have a bit all over the place with different clips linked together. We could also over-saturate the transition to make the transition clearer and more evident. As well as this we use the same transition clips between scenes in the happy scenes as the sad scenes so we need to change this and use different transitions, maybe an additive dissolve.

Targets for next draft –

  • Group different settings together – Le Guet – Beach – In the Rocks – Water shots
  • Use different transition edits
  • Demonstrate repitition in depressed scenes
  • Sequence shots together – create more of a story.

Narrative Development

By creating a narrative development it allows us to get a feel of our narrative structure and gives us some direction and planning. It allows us to chose the characters and the roles of each person going to the shoot. It is a good way to create ideas to link to our narrative theme and if we come to any standstills we can take a quick look at these sheets and hopefully come up with a quick resolution by looking at our conflicts or central question.

Above is our narrative development. It includes the locations, props, actors, costumes, mise-en-scene. Having these simply jotted down and there to scan back and look at can create a feeling of much more structure and decreases the chance of a miscommunication or anyone forgetting anything.

Specsavers Feedback

Todays meeting with the specsavers representatives was a hard meeting to get too much advice on our video due to the recent change of narrative in our video. This meant our video was no where near a final product and hardly even complete. We had the clips the wrong way round and it didn’t relate to the lyrics. Therefore he just gave us some advice on what to do to fix the video and some ideas, different camera techniques were also used to link the ideas well and not have the video all over the place. He also spoke about ensuring our clips changed on the beat of the song to make the video feel more relevant to the lyrics and making it feel as if it linked. He also showed us how to do some after effects (changing the exposure, making it black and white, adding filters to it to convey the mood and narrative better.

Targets for next draft –

  • Black and white (monochrome filter)
  • Some cool transitions between clips
  • Time saving transitions between clips
  • Order the footage to fit the narrative more
  • Find a nice way to link/link between the narrative and performance
  • Long scenes for depressed part
  • Quick scenes and jump cuts for happy part

Shoot 2 Reflection

Our second shoot I feel was very mediocre. Looking back we got some really good footage however we also got some very lacklustre footage. With this shoot being narrative based we were looking to get some shots which displayed a very depressed girl during lockdown who has been dragged away from her friends and is just stuck in her room doing the same thing every day, to when ‘The Dog Days Are Over’ and she is out of lockdown with her friends again enjoying her freedom, portraying that the dog days are over. Firstly we started at each of our houses to show the depressed stage of our narrative, then once we shot all of these we headed up to Le Guet which is where the bulk of our high quality footage from this day came from. However the footage we got to show this didn’t portray that message very well, and the rest of the footage we shot for our narrative was just not very good and seemed like very poor ‘acting’. After this we shot some more performance based scenes which did work quite well so they saved the shoot overall I feel.

WWW –

Good performance shots

Good use of natural surroundings

High quality focus and shots

EBI –

More structure going into the shoot

Better shots to convey narrative

Range of shots (closeups, long shots, shot reverse shots)

Less acting like

Overall I feel as if the shoot was very average however useful as we got a decent bulk of footage, especially for our performance. However it is annoying that the footage for our narrative wasn’t very useful and was a bit of a waste of time and we will probably have to re-shoot.

Shoot 1 Reflection

Overall we feel as if our first shoot was fairly successful, especially for our first shoot. In this shoot we were hoping to shoot our performance narrative and get a lot of lip syncing and performance style clips that were pleasing on the eye. We shot a lot of different scenes in a variety of locations. Only problem we could’ve done with getting more of each shots with little tweaks and getting a few more shots in as we were somewhat low on footage. We went to Petit Bot for the whole shoot and recorded shots of performance scenes, lip syncing, dancing and just quite simply aesthetically pleasing shots. I feel like we used our surroundings  pretty effectively to get these aesthetically pleasing shots in with some original ideas.

WWW –

Good intuitive for original shots

Effective use of location

Good choice of location

Lip syncing

EBI –

More shots

More takes of specific scenes

Went into the shoot with a more structure

Linking different shots together

Close ups

Overall we as a group are content with the shoot as it meant we could get to grips with our video and shooting. Despite not getting too much footage we are happy with the footage we got as they’re all nice shots however could do with some more shots which link in with each other as all of the shots are a bit scattered, they’re all more just random aesthetically pleasing shots with very minimal structure. With this being a performance based shoot we could’ve done with getting more of a range of shots as they were all mid-shots with minimal variety, which I feel could be to do with the lack of planning going into the shoot.

The last 30 seconds of the video aren’t apart of this post however it is apart of the rest of our video, hence why there are some blank spots and black screen cutouts.

Self Assessment – To produce and film this video we went to the beach, Petit Bot at 12pm on Sunday the 27th of June. Personally I feel as this is a strong start to out production and filming. The MES represents the song really well, especially for our performance based narrative. We also have a lot of lip syncing as well some other good clips on the beach which bode well with the song. We also have a wide variety of shots, low shots, closeups, high angle shots and wide shots.

Necessary Improvements –

  • focused on the chorus of the song as it would’ve been a better indicator for the rest of our video
  • more variety of location shots across the beach
  • more close-ups. in particular whilst lip syncing
  • more moving shots
  • shoes taken off the star performer at all times, not on sometimes and off at others
