Music Video Final Draft

Overall I feel as if our music video came together pretty well in the end. After multiple shoots to grab some last ditch footage together it’s relatively messy as you would expect however I feel as if everything works pretty well. However we would obviously rather it was a bit neater and better. Despite this we have added our own twists to it which we feel are unique, for example the change of shade and tone to represent the mood during the ‘The Dog Days’ and then after ‘The Dog Days’.

The Look Book – The Package

Down below is a padlet that is our ‘look book’. Here we have analysed different front covers of digipacks from our genre, Indie Pop. Doing this has allowed us to identify the conventions of our genre and how e can use it for the branding of our digipack.

Made with Padlet

Doing this padlet ‘look book’ enables us to analyse different conventions and styles of digipack within the indie pop genre. With this look book it is clear to see specific consistencies and conventions whether this be font, colour palette, star image or the size of the letters. Having done this research and analysis allows us to understand what will catch the eye of our target audience and what we can do that fits the conventions but is a bit outside the box.

Our Mission Statement – The Package Brand

Down below is a slideshow we made as a group speaking about our branding. It holds our USP, Mission Statement, our competition and target audience. This will help us to design and create our digipack to catch the eye of this target audience and beat our competition with the way that we design and market our digipack. And obviously, knowing our target audience is important for this.

Digipack Convention Analysis

Below is my textual analysis of Billie Eilish’s upcoming album (‘Happier Than Ever’) digipack. I analyzed the conventions and how she challenged the conventions and the different ways she presented the vibe and feeling she intended. I did this by looking at the;

  • Album name & font used
  • Colour(s) used
  • Mise-en Scene – Costumes, Hair, Make Up, Facial Expressions, Body Language
  • Song names
  • Font & sizes used
  • Record label logo

As you can see I anaylzed the front and back separately. I went into a fair bit of detail on how she challenged the conventions, how she conveyed the mood of her album and the different ways she did this. The conventions and consistencies in what she did, even if these were typically unconventional. Obviously all the technical conventions were there, e.g the barcode, record label logo, album name, star image, however there were unconventional features within these. But that would be what she wanted, she is an artist who is forever changing the pop game and has the resources to take these risks.

Overall I’d say on the most part this is a very mellow and natural album cover. However if you look closely you can see the light surrounding the star image is brighter and it fades out, almost as if a spotlight is on her. This may suggest her ascending up towards heaven or something along those lines, as she is now ‘happier than ever’ as the album name states. However all of the MES and colours connote a very ordinary and natural feel to the digipack.

Teacher Feedback – Screencastify

Below is Mr Gregson’s screencastify review of our work, he lists the pro’s and con’s of our current work, stuff we can do to improve and little pieces of advice.

Overall the main message was that he felt as if our work was a bit desperate and rushed together. A lack of structure with it being a bit all over the place, however the shots we have good are good with multiple ranges and different angles used. The mise-en-scene he said is also good and shows the change of narrative well. The use of black and white to show the sadness of our narrative is also effective he feels and makes it a lot clearer.

However we need to make a few things clearer or more signifigant (e.g what book is she reading, how does this make her depressed?). As well as this instead of the depressed stage being sequenced from place to place, show a repititive cycle to show how every day was the same and show how depressed and bored the star is.

As we transitioned into our happy scenes when the ‘Dog Days Are Over’ this is where we need to sequence it more and have different ‘chapters’ almost. However this is the section that we have a bit all over the place with different clips linked together. We could also over-saturate the transition to make the transition clearer and more evident. As well as this we use the same transition clips between scenes in the happy scenes as the sad scenes so we need to change this and use different transitions, maybe an additive dissolve.

Targets for next draft –

  • Group different settings together – Le Guet – Beach – In the Rocks – Water shots
  • Use different transition edits
  • Demonstrate repitition in depressed scenes
  • Sequence shots together – create more of a story.

Narrative Development

By creating a narrative development it allows us to get a feel of our narrative structure and gives us some direction and planning. It allows us to chose the characters and the roles of each person going to the shoot. It is a good way to create ideas to link to our narrative theme and if we come to any standstills we can take a quick look at these sheets and hopefully come up with a quick resolution by looking at our conflicts or central question.

Above is our narrative development. It includes the locations, props, actors, costumes, mise-en-scene. Having these simply jotted down and there to scan back and look at can create a feeling of much more structure and decreases the chance of a miscommunication or anyone forgetting anything.

Specsavers Feedback

Todays meeting with the specsavers representatives was a hard meeting to get too much advice on our video due to the recent change of narrative in our video. This meant our video was no where near a final product and hardly even complete. We had the clips the wrong way round and it didn’t relate to the lyrics. Therefore he just gave us some advice on what to do to fix the video and some ideas, different camera techniques were also used to link the ideas well and not have the video all over the place. He also spoke about ensuring our clips changed on the beat of the song to make the video feel more relevant to the lyrics and making it feel as if it linked. He also showed us how to do some after effects (changing the exposure, making it black and white, adding filters to it to convey the mood and narrative better.

Targets for next draft –

  • Black and white (monochrome filter)
  • Some cool transitions between clips
  • Time saving transitions between clips
  • Order the footage to fit the narrative more
  • Find a nice way to link/link between the narrative and performance
  • Long scenes for depressed part
  • Quick scenes and jump cuts for happy part
