First Shoot Contact Sheet(s)

I have chosen these photos because not only are they the best quality but the models are looking directly in the camera which helps to connect with the audience. They are both in striking and bold outfits which is exactly what I wanted to achieve in my photoshoot. They look glamorous with a sense of being down to earth and kind. The models look sincere and in control of their audience and fans.

Mast Head Designs

These are some of the ideas I have for my Mast Head:

My magazine is R&B so I would like a smooth and slick font to fit the genre. I want my font to be bold but be well rounded and big. Since the name of my magazine BD is an abbreviation of the word Breakdown, I want it to stand out.

So what am I up against?

I have analysed my competition and have done research on them. In my voice thread and powerpoint I will explain who my competition is and I have explained what I would like in my magazine. I have chosen the images that inspire my magazine cover because it is important to be conventional to the genre but at the same time different in order to gain an audience.

Star Image

Today I looked at Richard Dyer a media theorist, He decided that the paradox or riddle of the star was that they are both:

  • Extraordinary-talented, amazing
  • Ordinary-go shopping, drive cars, fail exams

And are both:

  • Present-fan sites, tweets, social media, interviews (we can interact with them)
  • Absent-concerts, interviews, TV (they are out of our reach)

As a fan we would love to meet these stars.

I have created a Meta-narrative Prezi presentation about the artist NE-YO an R&B artist. A Meta-narrative is a mix of media that constructs and shapes the star in the mind of the audience.

Here are some of the style choices I would like to include on my model:

Communicating my Brand

Above shows my Pinterest board of inspiration that I will use to create my music magazine. The genre is R&B so I tried to get as many pins as I could relating to R&B. This was a challenge since R&B has such a huge range of sub genres. You can have R&B ballads by artists like NE-YO and then more electronic and dance R&B by artists like The Weekend. Still I think I managed to capture both in my pin board.

Branding Ideas + Mission Statement

I have decided that the name for my Magazine will be Breakdown and my genre will be R&B. I have chosen this name because magazines are normally known for breaking down topics so people can understand them and get all the information. Also R&B focuses a lot on emotions and when you have a lot of emotions you have a breakdown so I thought it was appropriate.

This is a Wordcloud of all the things I associate with R&B:

My mission statement:’Breakdown is one of the top five magazines for those who love R&B music and styles. We include top stories straight from your favourite bands and artists, the best R&B releases and exclusive interviews from those topping our charts daily and your old favourites as well. Breakdown magazine inspires passion and freedom in young adults who don’t know what to do with their lives as well as R&B fashion modelled by popular groups and soloists. We allow our readers to express themselves through everything R&B and encourage variety’

A Front Cover Analysed

Here I was asked to give a textual analysis on a magazine. This meant that I had to look at the type of people who read this type of magazine and find their other interests. I enjoyed this since it gave me an insight to what others like. For example you can determine:

  • age
  • gender
  • socio-economic
  • disposable income
  • interests and lifestyle
  • personality traits
  • values, beliefs and attitudes

This will be important when I begin my magazine since I will want it to appear to the audience who like that genre of music. I need to make sure I have included some of their other interests and try and find the right fonts, colours, images and language to intrigue the audience.

Audience Profiling

Here we had to annotate a music magazine cover and get statistics on what kind of people read the magazine. This is important since I need to understand the other interests and what age groups read this certain magazine. This will make the magazine more appealing to that specific group of people. For example I was given a Classical Music magazine. The typicalities of people who read the Classical Music magazines are:

  • wealthy
  • upper middle class
  • not common in the younger generation
  • mostly baby boomers

When I first create my magazine I will need to be aware of what age group I want to cater for and know their other interests so that I can appeal to that age group. This will be important since I want people to want to buy my magazine so everything that goes in my be liked by that specific audience.
