Music Video- Draft 2

After receiving the feedback on our draft 1, we went back to editing our video further with the very useful  critical comments we gathered. Moreover, we really tried to focus on the targets that were set and worked our way to hopefully fulfilling these in our second draft. We decided to add much wider range of footage material this time and also slightly adjusted our pace of edit to make the video a lot more interesting and exciting. Once again, despite this it is also evident that this is an incomplete draft due to the fact many places re missing footage, however we hope to fix this in our third draft.

Once again, we hope to gain the necessary feedback on this draft to really continue to put our product forward. We hope to gain constructive criticism that will enable us to improve our video once again.

The Post-Production Stage

The post-production stage was an extremely crucial factor to the progress and development of our music video. Here, we were able to experiment with a range of different effects that allowed us to make a much more conventional video to our preferred genre. Furthermore, these particular tools enabled us to establish a more professional, well- composed video that would most definitely appeal to our target audience. Some of the tools in which we used were factors like:

Exponential Fade:

Here, we used the tool ‘exponential fade’ when we inserted the foley sound of the sea at the very end of our music video. This allowed us to make the sound more suited to the video and therefore appear appropriate to the scene.

Cross Dissolve:

The cross dissolve allowed us to fade clips into each other, creating an artistic, conventional aesthetic to the work we created. Moreover, this transition enabled us to make smoother changes between shots.

Speed/ Duration:

This was an especially important tool in this making of our product. It enabled us to really slow down key features in our video to emphasis particular shots. Furthermore, the use of ‘reverse speed’ in this feature allowed us to achieve the exact look we wanted for our narrative representation of the ink in the water.

Motion:

Moreover, this function allowed us to correct a few of our performance shots. With the use of this tool, we were able to dispose of any unusual leading space and replace it with a slow, conventional pan instead.

Brightness and Contrast:

This was an essential feature in every single shot we used throughout our music video. By slightly adjusting the brightness and contrast of our shots, we were able to create footage which appeared to be of a high standard visually. This allowed emphasis on the dark, low-key lighting in the studio and then on the brightness and reflections of the sea in our narrative shots.

With this use of these tools, features and functions we were able to dramatically improve our video; creating a much more conventional product overall. Here, we were able to focus on the minor details improving our video further and therefore creating a video that would appear a lot more visually interesting.

Music Video- Shoot Evaluation- Narrative

For the narrative shoot, we decided to go to petit bot to film our sequences. With the beautiful scenery and mass amount of cliff surfaces, we thought it was the idea and suitable location to shoot the narrative portion of our sequence. Much like the performance shoot, we again set up three different cameras in order to gain all of the shots we thought were necessary in this particular scene. This enabled us to experiment with a wide range of different and interesting angles that made the dramatic scene a lot more appealing it its viewer. Here, we also tried using a handheld mount to allow more movement in our shots, we felt this would be more appropriate for the expressive movements our actor was portraying.

Even though this shoot was quite successful, it is evident that we will most definitely need to refilm. This is simply due to the fact, that upon reviewing our footage we feel it would be a lot more suitable to include a wider range of extreme close ups on the actors hands and feet. We believe this will allow the performance to appear a lot more expressive and therefore perhaps the audience will develop a stronger connection to the character and her emotions. Furthermore, we also felt that there should be more of the scenery throughout the video and therefore we are hoping to include the sea in our video, as we feel the will build a much stronger connection to the location.

Targets:

  • Ensure that we are more strict with directing our performer, in order to gain the shots that we need.
  • Have a clear plan and strategy for the shots we need to achieve in the time frame we have set.
  • Film multiple shots of each specific action in order to guarantee we have the perfect shot each time.

Here, we had to complete the document above for this particular task. This displays all the information necessary for the shoot that will taken place and therefore we have all the details needed in one place. Furthermore, this table includes things like the shoot title, date of shoot, outline of the narrative, costumes/make-up and who is filming which sequences. All the details are listed in this well-presented document making it a more effective planning document.

This will enable us to be a lot more organised during the filming time and therefore we shall be able to gather a lot more footage. It will enable us to handle our time a lot more efficiently and so we will most definitely achieve the shots we hope for. Moreover, this document will also ensure that everything we need to brought to the beach and therefore we will have everything we need for filming the sequence.

Music Video- Narrative Storyboard

For this task, we had to create a series of story boards in order to demonstrate key elements that we would be filming in our narrative. We explored four different sections that we believe are very important sequences for our narrative. Moreover, we completed step by step shot list of what would be happening, each box contains a small image of what the shot entails and a small description.

From this we learnt how important it is to have a clear and well structured sequence for our narrative. This made us a lot more organised and therefore will help us to manage our time a lot more efficiently. Furthermore, this shall make sure that everything we film is what we actually need and therefore we will be able to film a lot more effectively.

Draft 1 Feedback and Targets

Please click on the image above to view the youtube comments.

After publishing our first music video draft to youtube, we started to receive a few constructive comments. Elements that seemed to work well and factors that need to be improved were discussed in a few of the comments and therefore this will help us in the production process of our video. We were critically assessed on the work we had completed so far and so, the work we go on to do next will be dramatically improved; ensuring our next draft will be a lot better than the first. In total we had three separate Youtube moments, all of which we will take into consideration when taking our media product further into production.

From this, I leant just how important it is to gather feedback from your audience. They are the people your products aimed at and therefore it is most definitely important to gather information about their opinions, as this is what really matters. By taking on this feedback, we will be able to make the necessary changes and create a product that really appeals to our target audience. The targets we have taken from this feedback task is:

  • Refilm the performer section of the music video, as in laces it is clear he is unsure of the word and therefore almost mumbles.
  • The pace of edit also needs to be improved on in places. At points there seems to be a slow, met boring edit to beat and this quickly become unappealing to the viewer.
  • Overall, add more content. Perhaps a wider range of narrative shots, this will make the video as a whole more appealing to watch. With the use of more footage, the video will appear more substantial and so the viewer will immediately be much more inclined to enjoy watching the product.

Above is a video of our draft 1, we uploaded this to YouTube in order to gain some feedback which we can use to help improve our music video. This is simply a very rough idea of how we would like our music video to look and therefore you can clearly see where there are shots missing and areas that definitely need to be improved. We can also see from this that a large portion of our narrative is missing and therefore this will be added in our next draft.

From this task, we hope to gain a large portion of critical feedback so we can improve our music video. We will use all the feedback we receive to change our music video to make it a lot more visually appealing.

Shoot Evaluation- Performance

Our performance shoot took place in our school’s black photography studio, on the 7th of October. We set up three cameras and made sure to film a simple portraiture shoot from different angles. Moreover, we ensured that we had a range of close ups, mid shots and long shots. Here we were able to really experiment with a variety of angles and therefore this resulted in us achieving a lot of footage. Furthermore, we also decided to incorporate a few different techniques to make the footage a little more appealing to watch. These including things like tilts, pans, zooms and unfocusing/ re-focusing the camera lens. We believe these simple skills will allow the footage to become much more visually interesting for the audience.

Despite how well the shoot went (as we maintained the footage we were hoping for), there were a few incidents that did not go quite according to plan. This caused some disruption in our filming and therefore a little time was wasted. Firstly, one of our cameras ran out of battery and so we had to go back to the media department to grab another one. Another camera had a slight red tint to it, which we did not know how to adjust. However, despite this we realised this could easily be fixed in the editing stage of our product.  Also, our actor didn’t know a few of the words leading to some of the footage being unusable.

Targets:

  • Ensure all the cameras are charged.
  • Set up equipment in advance, so if anything goes wrong (for example the red tint) we have enough time to properly sort it.
  • Establish whether or not all the lyrics have been learnt before shooting.

We had to complete the above document for this task. This included things like the shoot title, date of shoot, outline of performance/narrative, who would be featuring, costume/ makeup and the props. For this, we ensured that everything was infact planned in advance. This made sure that we were organised and knew exactly what was happening before filming day. Moreover, we also listed who was responsible for each item, displaying a clear outline of what was needed and who was in charge of bringing it.

This task helped us to be a lot more prepared and organised during filming. It also allowed us to handle our time a lot more efficiently and effectively, this ensured that we did not waste any of our time while shooting. Furthermore, we were able to film a lot more footage and therefore we dealt with our time in a much more appropriate manner.

Music Video- Shot List- Performance

screen-shot-2016-10-23-at-20-36-41

Please click on the image above to view the full shot list.

We had to complete a shot list for this task, in order to have a clear outline of suggested shots for our performance shoot. Moreover, we decided to look at Shawn Mendes’ music video for ‘Treat you better’, as we felt the music genre was fairly similar to our chosen song and therefore believed that the shots used would be appropriate for our video. We compiled the above shot list, consisting of 6 different camera angles/ shots. Furthermore, we felt these particular shots would work best for our performance shoot and therefore this is the reason why we incorporated them into our shot list.

Due to this task, we learnt just how important it is to have an idea of what type of shots we need before even filming our own video. This allowed us to be a lot more organised and therefore we did not waste time thinking of what shots were needed when we were actually shooting our own performer. This enabled us to use our time efficiently and effectively, ensuring that we managed our time and received as many shots as possible from this shoot. Consequently, this will allow us to experiment a lot more in the editing stage of our music video, as we will have a wide range of many different angles/ shots available.
