Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

This is a section of our first edited draft using our first performance shoot.

What went well:

  • we used a repetoire of elements to convey our genre,
  • the editing to the beat and lipsync is very good,
  • we used a variety of shots,
  • the conventions such as mise en scene portray the star image well,

What to improve:

  • use more colour correcting in post production,
  • use a variety of movement,
  • use a few more shots or clip lengths,

Now I know what I need to do in the future for our next shoot to improve conveying our star image and genre.

Shoot 1 Reflection

Our performance shoot went really well, we recorded our video in the white studio, in the afternoon, using our model Lily. We finished in good time and had lots of fun with the mise en scene such as lighting and costumes/makeup and camera, getting all the shots we felt we needed.

What went well:

  • we filmed a variety of shots to keep the video interesting,
  • we had different costumes, hair and makeup to reflect our star image,
  • we utilised the different lighting equipment and shadows,
  • our actress was very expressive in her lip sync/movement and open to what we asked of her,
  • we recorded a lot of good footage of the whole song,
  • we framed our model in the middle of the camera so we can experiment with editing to the beat in post production stages.

What to improve:

  • make sure no shots are blurry or out of focus,
  • bring spare batteries for the lights as they died,
  • include more moving camera shots,
  • use a projector to save time in editing stages,
  • change up the framing or positioning in our close up shots,
  • we need to colour correct our videos.

Production Meeting

A production meeting agenda as shown below is vital for a shoot in order to ensure everyone involved is aware of the date, time, and location and knows what they need to bring. It also sets a plan for what we want our model to look like in different shots as they can connote different things and we must also convey professionalism.

We spent time carefully planning for our first video shoot for mise en scene such as costumes, makeup, and lighting to convey our star image. This agenda will guarantee we are prepared and ready to film our music video on the date and times we wish and at the correct location.

Risk Assesment

A risk assessment as shown below is essential when doing a shoot in order to evaluate the risks of your chosen location and how to ensure yourself and others’ safety whilst filming.

This signed and confirmed risk assessment will now allow us to film in the locations we desire comfortably and safely, which is important as using roads or car parks can be dangerous.

Star Image

How pop singer Cat Burns is depicted online:

The singer Cat Burns and her music are part of the pop genre. She is often photographed in more masculine or gender-neutral clothing such as suits and blazers, expressing her sexuality, and portraying her as a strong and independent woman. Her collaborations for pride month with TikTok also show her support of the LGBTQ+ community, this is important for younger fans to see her positive views as it can encourage them to be and feel supported.

Her relationship with other popular people in the public eye such as YouTuber Nella Rose and pop singer Sam Smith would expose her to a wider audience and therefore gain more fans. She is conveyed in headlines as a very popular artist, compared and in competition with huge stars such as Harry Styles, Lizzo and Joji and also described as ‘the pop voice of the next generation’. This repertoire of elements furthers her star image as a strong and powerful woman.

We would like our star to be conveyed to the audience as a powerful and independent and unique woman who can overcome anything, promoting girl power. This will be portrayed through conventions such as mise en scene; makeup, lighting, costume and acting.

Conventional Shots and Narratives from my Genre

This post is to explore and identify key filming conventions and performance styles for my genre. Music videos in the female pop genre that we researched have a strong theme of female empowerment alongside heartbreak, however some videos may be slightly abstract and more metaphorical to the lyrics. We looked into artists such as Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodriguo and more who used conventions in cinematography and editing to convey their theme and star image. This genre of videos also follow either a linear or sometimes episodic structure. the artists tend to interact with the camera and audience emotionally in close ups while lip syncing and the mise en scene typically depends on the artists personality of individual star image however the use of strobe and bright lighting is common in this genre.

Made with Padlet

We used the website Padlet in order to create a collage of the usual editing, mise en scene and camera shots used in music videos of the pop genre. This research task allowed me to view and explore the typical repertoire of elements for music videos in my genre. This will help greatly when I create my own music video as I am fully aware of the conventions I need in my cinematography and editing to achieve and portray my star image well.

Final Pitch to Teacher

As a group, we planned and presented a pitch for a final song idea to our teacher in order to clarify how we would portray our star image in both the performance and narrative of our music video. We discussed topics such as the narrative structure, narrative type, and mise en scene for our pop genre music video to ensure our ideas for the performance and narrative were good and approved. Sticking to the conventions we discussed in this pitch will guarantee our music video matches our star image and genre well.

VIDEO

6 positives from our pitch:

  • our song choice matches and goes well with our narrative,
  • our actress is confident in performing,
  • our locations we want to use our accessible and fitting,
  • we are able to use a car as a prop,
  • our video ideas match up to the typical pop genre, gaining a positive audience response,
  • we found new ideas in order to expand our narrative well,

6 targets from our pitch:

  • ensuring we have a way to move the car and it is safe,
  • begin to outline a filming schedule that is convenient for all 3 people,
  • do not use too many cliches to keep it original,
  • compile a wardrobe to fit the video,
  • notify our actress of all plans we have and ensure shes comfortable,
  • plan very well as we are filming at night in risky settings,

Permission from Artist

This task was important in order to appreciate the issue of copyright in the Music Industry and ask for permission to use the song for educational purposes only.

We messaged the pop artist Cat Burns on the social media app Instagram due to the copyright issues surrounding artists by their music and material being used illegally. Therefore it was essential for us to ask for her permission before using her song in our videos.

Final Song Choice

Planning, producing, and presenting a pitch for our final idea and being able to outline the performance and narrative. This is our pitch for the song we would like to use, explaining the narrative type and structure, the performance, conventions, and the mise en scene we will use to convey our star image.

We have chosen this song for our music video because:

  • We already have a fitting narrative,
  • It is easy to lip sync,
  • It is in the pop genre,
