Contact Sheet

Above is a slideshow of all of our contact sheets for our digipak. Overall I think the shoot went well, we have vast variety of different shots in which we will use them for our front, inside right and back page digipak. Upon examining the photographs myself and my group have found that the vast majority of our shots are clear and in focus, this is amazing as we have more images to choose from.

In addition to this, I believe this photoshoot has fit in with the ideal electropop genre we are trying to convey, it equally highlights the star image we wish to portray. However if I could change one thing about the shoot it is that we could of used a different chair as it didn’t fit in with our original edgy and unconventional star image. Due to this being an issue we will have to edit the chair during photoshop if we decide to use any of the images with the chair featuring.

Photoshoot / Design Production Meeting and Risk Assessment

Click here or on the image to fully view our production meeting agenda:

When planning a photoshoot, production meeting agendas are key if we wish for our digipak to be a success. A PMA highlights what we need for our shoot and who brings what equipment. Everything must be there in order for the star and brand image to be correct. We are portraying our star to be extraordinary rather then ordinary, which is why we are dressing her in a silver shirt as it adds to the eccentric and edginess of the star image. Myself and my group want our star to stand out and we feel that this outfit will be able to convey the right star and brand image that we want.

As we are conducting the photoshoot onsite at school, we do not need to produce a risk assessment as it wasn’t needed.

Hand drawn mock up

When planning our digipak, we have to consider what kind of vibe we are going for. Below is myself and my groups hand drawn mock up alongside a colour palette which we will take into consideration when planning and inside our shoot.

When drawing this handmock up of our digipak we ensured that we have included any techinal conventions, for example a barcode and a title for the album, equally including the  genre conventions of the electropop genre. An example of this is a neon colour palette of the different colours we wish to use alongside graphics and a bold typeface.

These are important things to remember as if we encode the right information for our target audience, they will have a preferred style of reading resulting in our digipak to become a success. If we can highlight the stars edgy and quirky side then we have successfully highlighted the star and brand image to the target audience.

Branding Moodboard

Made with Padlet

Above is myself and my groups mood board inspired by the electro-pop genre. This is what we are hoping to be our brand image. We used padlet in order to plan and organise our own ideas/inspiration as to what we want our star image to be and equally what we want our digipak to look like. The repertorie of elements and the general conventions of a typical electropop digipak combined, will ensure to engage our ideal star image, thus meaning the audience can decode and deconstruct it efficiently.

Digipak Conventions Analysis

The slideshow above, is a detailed analysis of an album which is typical of the electro pop genre. I have found that the star image has been conveys through the use of imagery and colours. The overall vibe for the album is that it is grungy and edgy. The vibe of the album is represented by the artists star image, which suggests that Billie has made a brand for herself and wishes to stick by the edgy and eerie star image. When creating an album you have to be able to consider all of the technical conventions of the album an example of this is the barcode.

The denotations of this album is that the audience can see Billie sat on the edge of a bed dressed in all white. However the connotations of this particular album is having night terror and expecting the unexpected.

Billie has stated the following about this particular album:

“what happens when you fall asleep it is basically supposed to be a bad dream, or a good dream”.

Below are some of the conventions that are featured in a digipak:

  • Imagery
  • Spine
  • Bar code
  • Copyright information
  • Music producers logo
  • Song names
  • Album Title
  • Name of the star / or band

In terms of the electro-pop genre I have found that it is conventional for a digipak to include the following:

  • Faded images / Distorted Images
  • Bright colours which contrast with the darker colours shown on the album too
  • Bold fonts
  • minimal covers leaving a lot of bare space

Our Mission Statement – The Package Brand

Above is myself and my groups Mission Statement, we have been doing a detailed analysis about our branding and how we can have the audience integrated and immersed inside of the promotion and build up of the album release. In addition to that we also looked at the USP (Unique and Selling Point)  alongside the mission statement and a call to action. These things are key when doing research about a specific genre, as they will be able to benefit us as consumer, but also benefit our target audience. Integrated Advertising is key here as we are using a variety of different ideas and using different integrated tools in order to please the prosumers which are our target audience,

Music Video Draft 4

Below is myself and my groups draft 4 of our music video:

Feedback from peers and audience:

  • Overall they both understood the concept and the story we wished to convey
  • The mise en scene was clear and well presented
  • The lighting in the performance element was good
  • To improve we should stop using the same clips and try use different ones

Below is feedback given from my teacher:

Targets for improvment:

  • Colour fix some shots of Millie
  • Slow down the shots of Millie shaking her head
  • Make sure to slow down the ending when her hand reaches out towards the camera or to transition the clip to black
  • Make the shots of Min in the bunker less central and scale in more as it is a bit repetitive

Music Video Draft 3

Above is our 3rd draft of our music video to the song ‘Panic Room’ by Au/Ra:

We have made many changes since the second draft, which are the following:

  • Looked over the footage at the start of the video as it looked blurry
  • Made sure we have every time we have used a filter that it is the same one throughout the video
  • We have zoomed in one some shots – for example the bunker and close ups in the underground hospital
  • Experimented with the scale and positioning of particular shots
  • Removed any dark or grainy clips
  • We have edited to the pace of the beat in particular parts of the song
  • We have made sure to edit a clip if we have used it more then once – for example flipping a clip horizontally
  • Added in a new jump cut sequence

Not only do we have to give our own feedback, but we have to collect five youtube comments from two of our peers:

Peer one:

Peer two:

General feedback from both peers:

  • Very good mise en scene
  • Good variety of different shots
  • Make the pace of edit quicker during the chorus as they are fast
  • The music video is slow – paced for the song currently
  • Some shots became a little bit repetitive – experiment with other shots

Below is some feedback given by my dad’s co workers who are interested and experiment with creating music videos using premiere pro. This is very helpful as we are able to gather more feedback, which will allow us to grow as editors and adapt our music video to be even better.

Targets of improvement for our final draft:

  • To ensure we are editing to the pace of the beat in some shots
  • Check that all of the lip syncing clips are lined up with the song
  • Edit Millie to appear more in quicker parts of the song
  • Try to have some short fade ins or fade outs to black
  • Add a title at the start of the song
  • Fade the ending out to black

Teacher Feedback

Screencastify feedback from teacher:

Upon viewing the footage, my teacher gave us the following feedback:

  • Check the footage at the start of the video as it appears to be blurry and grainy
  • Very good jump cuts
  • Make sure you are consistent with the filters throughout the video as some have different filters to others
  • Zoom in some clips in particular the chains clip.
  • Try to experiment with scale and position when it comes to the performance shots, therefore the performer isn’t central all of the time.
  • Remove the dark and grainy clip in the wall
  • Make sure to add pace to the edit on the beats when Millie is banging on the wall.
  • Don’t use the same shot twice, try editing the clip so it appears to be different
  • Only use narrative over the “Welcome to the, welcome to the” lyrics.

Specsavers and Digital Greenhouse Feedback

Earlier in the week the Specsavers creative team came in and overall i found the feedback to be very valuable as we know have a basic understand on more advanced editing tricks and effects.

A tool that particularly stands out to me that the specsavers team showed us was the adjustment layer. When you apply the adjustment layer, it will apply all of the selected effects to any clips below the layer. I found this to be helpful as it will save myself and my group a lot of time during editing, which leaves us with more time to cut down the clips and edit to the beat of the music.  In addition to that, another i found to be very useful was the mask toolwhen you apply the mask tool. The mask tool allows us to merge different clips and move them around the frame creating unique outcomes. The team stated that they liked what they had seen from our video so far due to the fact that at the time we had not edited or cut a lot of our clips yet.

Earlier this week, we had some of the creative team from the Digital Greenhouse come in to answer any questions we had about editing and equally to look our all of our videos. One of the team members stated that she liked our song and enjoyed watching our video. However a piece of advice she gave to our group was to quicken the pace of edit to when the beat drops to mimic the beat. An interesting tool that the team showed us was how to ensure all of our clips are at a perfect brightness and exposure. The team explained in detail how this can be done, which is by: Creating an adjustment layer and ensure all of the shadowing and white on the clip are of a correct level of lighting, contrasting and exposure. I believe this will be beneficial for our group and will once again save us a lot of hassle and time during editing.
