Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

This is the first 30 seconds of our performance shoot for our music video which we have edited together. I do not feel as if this is the right vibe which we intend to go for and is not suited for the particular genre. There is a difference in out first and second shoots as the performer feels more confident in one and not the other, this does not match what we want. I feel as if we need to focus on editing our clips together better with appropriate transitions as at the moment it is very rough and does not show off our potential. I am hoping to change how this looks dramatically and will be able to showcase want my intentions are.

What we need to improve on:

  • camera angles
  • editing
  • performance
  • mise-en-scene
  • style which we are trying to achieve
  • variety of locations throughout the summer

Shoot 1 Reflection (performance)

Our first attempt at the performance shoot for our music video was successful, however there are many things which we have picked up on so we can improve for our next shoot. Looking back at the footage we recorded, we ended up with a very limited amount of shots from different angles, so there wasn’t much variety when it came to editing our clips together. We also had only one of our performers available for our first shoot, so only the male voice of our song was able to be lip synced. We also did not have a variety of different outfits for our performer to wear, the costuming wasn’t very well organised resulting in the only having one outfit for the entirety of the shoot. However, all these things have been taken into consideration and will be fixed/changed for our next performance shoot.

what went well

  • performance
  • organisation

what can we improve on for next time

  • more costumes
  • wider variety of shots/more filming options
  • make sure the other performer is available

Star Image- The Performer

The meta narrative of our star image is helpful to know as it is importantĀ  to represent an image and as it will construct the artists beliefs and values for the audience. The star image is important in my music video because it helps to convey their thoughts, feelings and emotions. I will use my research to make my performer relevant to what Rudimental are and I will give my performers a similar star image so that they are still someone the audience want to watch and also look up to. My performance will be impacted by these ideas following the characteristics of the artist.

Richard Dyer has a theory which discusses the paradox of the star and how someones star image is formed and how they appear extraordinary yet ordinary and relatable at the same time.

I created a moodboard of features associated with my artist which will portray the star image of our artists. Our aim is forĀ  them to come across as friendly, playful with a sense of adventure and freedom as we want them to welcome an audience. We will try to make them stand out from a crowd, with subtle features

Risk Assessement

The risk assessment sheet is important for us to be able to assess any potential risks when shooting our music video. With the sheet, we will be able to look at what could happen and subsequently try our best to avoid them.

Visual Shot List for Shoot 1 (Performance)

The genre of our artist is drum and bass/pop. There are many conventional shots which are used within this genre which gives a sense to the music video that is distinct for the audience. Our artist works with many artists in their music videos meaning there are many styles combined. However, throughout them all we noticed a lot of close up and mid shots were used along with hand held shots which showed the informal nature of some of the music videos, making them more natural.

In our music video we will copy the conventions as well as adding variety to make it our own. Making it more distinct to our performers we will also follow the idea that the artists vary throughout many of their videos and therefore the style changes frequently in order suit.

The variety of shots along with the matching of conventions, we will be able to portray the star images’ key aspects. It is important to keep my music video the same but different.

Describe your audience

From our research about our artists’ audience, we will use the information to reach out target audience and illustrate our narrative to make it appropriate. This will be important in order to satisfy our audience and make the music video successful. However, it cannot just be the narrative that appeals to the audience, the performance must also appeal to the audience to make them want to continue on watching the music video.

Final Song Choice

These days by Rudimental ft Jess Glynn

The reason why we have chosen this song is because it is uplifting and reflects the narrative we want to portray. The lyrics also fit into our theme. We feel as if we will be able to match an video to the lyrics and create meaning through it.
