Shoot 1 Reflection

Where did you go? How did it go?

My actors and I when across the road to an empty field where the grass was about knee high and was a nice yellow color in some areas, and overall the performance went well with only a few hiccups along the way, we got a good amount of good footage that was useable at some really good points

Reflect – what went well? what went badly?

we got a few good shots that made a really nice intro as the song starts, for both of the band members I did a verticle pan that went in the opposite direction for each of them, and for some of the lip-sync parts we lip-synced really well by my main actor, but I didn’t get all the footage I wanted or enough of the camera angles I wanted.

Focus forward – do you need to pick up shots? how does this help represent your star image?

we will need a few pick-up shots as I didn’t get all the shots that I wanted to do, for example, I wanted to get some long shots of the guitarist at different ranges, and I would have liked to get a super close-up of the actual guitar being played.

Production Meeting for Shoot 1 (Performance)

Having a production meeting agenda is by far one of the best things to have when creating a large-scale project like this, it’s a physical agreement between group members to follow the guidelines and avoid any issues that may happen such as a disagreement on outfits or props. if written down and discussed properly it can be a perfect tool to ensure your group follows the guidelines of the star image and Mis en scene. using this sheet saves tonnes of time as well as shows the conventions in a quick and easy-to-understand way.

Student Risk Assesment

Here is an image of my Student Risk Assessment, this consist of anything that could be a risk during the filming of the performance, for example: since we are filming in a field there could be rabbit holes that he cannot see or sharp rocks to trip over.

Using a risk assessment is incredibly useful and will be useful in the future, it’ll allow me to plan for the worst to happen and to avoid any injuries, and it also shows others where we would be when filming.

Previous Student’s Work

This is a previous A-level Media Student’s music video.

I love this music video because the song they chose isn’t a popular song compared to other songs listened to, and the music video’s narrative is really quite fitting to the song as it sings about ancient aliens and such. The timing with the video cutting to a new angle or scene is ideally on beat with the song and the lip-syncing is basically perfect and the singer has a voice that suits the actor.

The narrative and performance ratio is about 3:1, there are parts where you see instruments being played in time with the song. the narrative seems like it’s supposed to be some form of FBI/MIB theme to it with the detective board of notes and sheets with parts that are blacked out or say CLASSIFIED, this makes the main star seems mysterious, in the song the star sigs about aliens, and time machines so they seem like the type of person to believe all these conspiracies.

The video switches from the star sitting in casual clothing in front of a large wall covered in sheets that are covered in redacted paragraphs of writing to the same background. Still, they’re now wearing a black suit with a white shirt and the camera cuts from a mid-distance to a close up of the mouth or eyes of the star.

Star Image – The performer (Music Video)

Here I have found a perfect star image that suits the genre I wish to make a music video for.
Above is a Canva board of images and articles of the Virtual Band Gorillaz, ever since their debut in 2001, they had a huge impact on the music industry, described in many other articles as quirky and unusual they are iconic fashion icons, they also are amongst the most favored in the celebrity community as they do many songs that are in collaboration with other know artists or some lesser-known artists, this underlines how they want to give attention to other artists as they could just make music on their own, Gorillaz Do what they want and wear what they want, they have such a uniqueness to them that no other band comes close being that they just stand out amongst the rest. they are kind and are easily relatable to normal people as they have their own struggles that are shown in the music videos such as loss, regret, and relationship problems.
Using this board has allowed me to set conventions for the music video because I want my music video to be reminiscent of Gorillaz, using different filming and editing techniques in the future this will greatly benefit our digipacks and social media pages as we’ll have our boundaries and conventions to style my Musical Star to convey these ideals.

Conventional Shots and Narratives for my genre

Here is a Padlet of about 7 different and common shots that are used in the genre of music I’m doing a music video on.

Made with Padlet

After watching many of the Gorillaz music videos they all seem to be linked in some way like one long story set out over many separate music videos, the stories are quite abstract, a lot seem to be about them finding their place in their Universe, the gang change and get older and their home/studio, there also seems to be a lot of heartbreaking, with some of the gange reliving traumatic of sad experiences. But overall a lot of the music videos are just unusual and very abstract with unique cinematography. in the future, studying these shots before recording a music video can open up a lot more creativity when filming.

Music Video Form & Conventions

With this sheet and the music video examples, I have learned that not all music videos follow a specific narrative or their own lyrics, and sometimes the music video is completely different from what the song is singing, or sometimes its a bit of both with the music video having clips of the band performing then it cuts back to the actors in the video.

In the future, I now know that most music videos have the star as the main Actor when it comes to music videos that are fully narrative, this sells the star and their performance.

Final Pitch To Teacher

Here I made a video of my final pitch to Mrs. Cobb about my new performance after leaving the group I was with and doing the music video on my own. In the video, we spoke about the idea of the music video being part Performance and part Narrative with my singer and guitar player being shown in parts and cutting to the Narrative in other parts. the narrative of the music video is about a girl going about her daily life but then being in an accident causing her to pass away, the music video then repeats the same scenes but she realizes she is a ghost when she goes to look in the mirror, after realizing this the music video would either continue with her walking to a field as the music fades out or end in some other manner.

Feedback:

  • don’t overcomplicate the music video, too many ideas and it may not fit in with the timing of the song
  • keep it to something that can be done, with no expensive effects or setups

Targets:

  • keep music video plan simple and affordable
  • use plenty of camera angles and get as much footage as I can to have as much material as I can

Perfect Production Solo

Here is the sheet that was given to us to act as a contract so everyone is in agreement on what the group will act like and whos doing what. since I am on my own for the music video I had to change the sheet to fit my situation a bit better.

having contracts like this for the future can clear up a lot of difficulties and confusion when it comes to doing the work.
