Star Image – The performer (Music Video)

Here I have found a perfect star image that suits the genre I wish to make a music video for.
Above is a Canva board of images and articles of the Virtual Band Gorillaz, ever since their debut in 2001, they had a huge impact on the music industry, described in many other articles as quirky and unusual they are iconic fashion icons, they also are amongst the most favored in the celebrity community as they do many songs that are in collaboration with other know artists or some lesser-known artists, this underlines how they want to give attention to other artists as they could just make music on their own, Gorillaz Do what they want and wear what they want, they have such a uniqueness to them that no other band comes close being that they just stand out amongst the rest. they are kind and are easily relatable to normal people as they have their own struggles that are shown in the music videos such as loss, regret, and relationship problems.
Using this board has allowed me to set conventions for the music video because I want my music video to be reminiscent of Gorillaz, using different filming and editing techniques in the future this will greatly benefit our digipacks and social media pages as we’ll have our boundaries and conventions to style my Musical Star to convey these ideals.

Conventional Shots and Narratives for my genre

Here is a Padlet of about 7 different and common shots that are used in the genre of music I’m doing a music video on.

Made with Padlet

After watching many of the Gorillaz music videos they all seem to be linked in some way like one long story set out over many separate music videos, the stories are quite abstract, a lot seem to be about them finding their place in their Universe, the gang change and get older and their home/studio, there also seems to be a lot of heartbreaking, with some of the gange reliving traumatic of sad experiences. But overall a lot of the music videos are just unusual and very abstract with unique cinematography. in the future, studying these shots before recording a music video can open up a lot more creativity when filming.

Music Video Form & Conventions

With this sheet and the music video examples, I have learned that not all music videos follow a specific narrative or their own lyrics, and sometimes the music video is completely different from what the song is singing, or sometimes its a bit of both with the music video having clips of the band performing then it cuts back to the actors in the video.

In the future, I now know that most music videos have the star as the main Actor when it comes to music videos that are fully narrative, this sells the star and their performance.

Final Pitch To Teacher

Here I made a video of my final pitch to Mrs. Cobb about my new performance after leaving the group I was with and doing the music video on my own. In the video, we spoke about the idea of the music video being part Performance and part Narrative with my singer and guitar player being shown in parts and cutting to the Narrative in other parts. the narrative of the music video is about a girl going about her daily life but then being in an accident causing her to pass away, the music video then repeats the same scenes but she realizes she is a ghost when she goes to look in the mirror, after realizing this the music video would either continue with her walking to a field as the music fades out or end in some other manner.

Feedback:

  • don’t overcomplicate the music video, too many ideas and it may not fit in with the timing of the song
  • keep it to something that can be done, with no expensive effects or setups

Targets:

  • keep music video plan simple and affordable
  • use plenty of camera angles and get as much footage as I can to have as much material as I can

Perfect Production Solo

Here is the sheet that was given to us to act as a contract so everyone is in agreement on what the group will act like and whos doing what. since I am on my own for the music video I had to change the sheet to fit my situation a bit better.

having contracts like this for the future can clear up a lot of difficulties and confusion when it comes to doing the work.

Final Song Choice

Below is the music video for the song of my choice “Humility” by Gorillaz, this song can fit in with a lot of narrative music videos as well as it’s pretty easy to do a performance music video with. With the song’s slow singing, the lip-sync will be relatively easy to do with a bit of practice.

My Pitch Is the same and I think that no improvements are needed at this very moment.

I chose this song because it’s got a really good vibe that I think fits with the summer music style:

  • It has a good amount of instrumental and vocal mix
  • its got unique vocals as they have some form of filter over the top
  • it has a slow pace that is easy to keep up with
  • it’s not too over the top and blasting out music at a loud volume or screaming the lyrics
  • the lyrics sing about being the odd one out or the one whos left out and they want to come out of this isolation and get back on track

Mini Pitch –

Gorrilaz – Humility

Calling the world from isolation
‘Cause right now, that’s the ball where we be chained
And if you’re coming back to find me
You’d better have good aim
Shoot it true, I need you in the picture
That’s why I’m calling you (Calling you)
I’m the lonely twin, the left hand
Reset myself and get back on track
I don’t want this isolation
See the state I’m in now?
Calling the hunter with the rifle
‘Cause right now, that’s the ball where we be chained
Shoot it true, I want you in the picture
That’s why I’m calling you (Calling you)
I’m the lonely twin, the left hand
Reset myself and get back on track
I don’t want this isolation
See the state I’m in now?
If I pick it up when I know that it’s broken
Do I put it back?
Or do I head out onto the lonesome trail
And let you down?
I’m the lonely twin
The left hand (If I pick it up when I know that it’s broken)
(Do I put it back?)
I don’t want this isolation (Or do I head out onto the lonesome trail)
See the state I’m in now?
(And let you down?)
If I pick it up when I know that it’s broken
Do I put it back?
Or do I head out onto the lonesome trail
And let you go?
For my Mini pitch, I have chosen the song Humility By Gorillaz
The music video will be mainly narrative and possibly a small amount of performance, The music video starts off with a student who is walking down the road with their books when they suddenly turn around the screen goes black with a crash sound effect, the screen then fades from black to a field when suddenly a ghost sits up confused, they realize they’re dead and have a moment of relief now realizing that there are no more burdens for them to carry, no work, no pressure.
they wander around enjoying this time they have while the world continues around them slowly their mood goes down and they end up sitting on a swing looking at the ground when another ghost comes up and stands in front of them, the first ghost stands and hugs the second ghost, they then hold hands as they walk away together before the screen fades to a photo of a couple that resembles the ghosts in a way.

Narrative Exploration

Narrative Sequence is the term for a music video or a video in general that has a set story to it that is implied either through the video itself or the song that is played over the video, Most music videos do not have a set narrative and are just the band or singer performing, whereas some have a whole story, like a mini-movie, that portrays the song. Others and possibly the most common are narrative-based music videos with shots of performance mixed in.

Simple music video of the band performing in some form of warehouse with flashing colorful lights, Although this is a music video it does not have a set narrative/Story it is a performance from the band. The start of the song has a few small slithers of light that illuminate each one of the band members. When the chorus begins the lights around the room become purple with white stop lights before it stops when it’s back to its regular lyrics, at that point all the lights turn back off to soft purple light.

disjunctive Music Video (No Narrative, All Performance)

The main singer dancing around in some sort of waiting room but the floors and furniture are moving around while the walls stay still. halfway through the video, it cuts to a hallway with some backup dancers sliding back while the main star is running toward the camera like they’re on a treadmill. towards the end of the video, it goes back to the room from the beginning but there is a pool of blood forming on the floor from one of the sofas.

Experimental Music Video (No narrative, Some Performance, Overall pretty weird and unusual)

Animated Music Video (all Narrative, no performance, Really unusual and has this dark vibe only using red, white, and black)

The 3 main characters running away from some black wolf/monster, these 3 characters are a businessman, a teenager who smokes and skates, and a regular man in casual clothing riding a moped. They all seem to have some sort of issue apart from the man on the moped. The businessman seems to have some form of drinking problem possibly due to his stressful job. The teenager has a smoking problem. As they all run away they converge together when they are all knocked down the man in casual clothes stands up and faces the wolves who are meant to symbolize fear and how running from it doesn’t work and you should just face it.

Ideas For Music videos

High School Spirit – A music video about a student who lost their lives in an accident with their high school sweetheart and now wanders the world looking for her for them to meet at their favorite place, the swings

Mother Unnatural – A man sits at his computer and is slowly becoming a recluse, his research leads him to find out how technology has destroyed the natural order of the world, mothers can decide the color and features of their child, and how the future will be made of technologies, he tries to spread his words and warning online but everyone calls him crazy and insane which eventually drives him to insanity

High School Spirit v2.0 – A story about a Student under all this pressure, abusive family, abusive friends, and girlfriend, he dies in an accident, and for him to wake up and be a ghost he goes around to see that all his burdens of life are gone and he can now, for the first time ever, Relax and enjoy what he’s doing. (I would use a song like Redbones – Come and get your love or Norman Greenbaum’s – Spirit In the Sky)

I love the idea of  High School Spirit v2.0

Narrative Sequence

For this task Summer, Izzy, and I were tasked with making a short video with the theme of getting dressed or ready. I volunteered to be the actor in the video and we thought a video of me waking up in pajamas and then getting dressed into a smart suit would be a simple but effective option. down below is the final video.

During the limited filming time we had, we saw that a lot of the shots could have been at a better angle or they could have been focused a bit more but overall we did well, we now know that when it comes to getting the shots framing, angle, and focus we should take our time if we can to make sure everything is in superb quality and doesn’t have any shots that seem out of place or throw off the whole video, in the future I would spend more time planning my shots and storyboard and possibly trying to have a wider variety of shots.
