MUSIC VIDEO FORM AND CONVENTIONS

MY MUSIC VIDEO EVALUATION SHEET (PDF LINKED):

REFLECTION AND FOCUS FORWARD:

Evaluating three music videos from different genres was beneficial to understand how narrative and performance can be tied together as well as how everything reflects on the artist and alters our idea of their star image as an audience. When deconstructing all these music videos, (regardless of whether they were narrative or performance), they fit the appropriate design conventions of a music video when it comes to editing, creative decisions, costuming, setting etc. One of these videos (“Sleep on the floor”) didn’t include any lip syncing and was solely narrative however the other featured snippets of the artist lip syncing throughout. This helps to reinforce their image and brings us association to their name when speaking about the music video later, this helps with promotion and publicization. The sound in the videos is definitely amplified to highlight the song as the main purpose and this also allows us to follow the story more easily (if there is one). I have also learnt that music videos are often anachronic, they have to be out of chronological order without a beginning, middle or end to ensure viewers watch the music video again; if there is a definite end it means viewers won’t feel a need to watch the video so this would be unhelpful to do in my own music video. Even though the music video is anachronic I will make sure it isn’t disjunctive, this would make it confusing, hard to follow and as a result would stop the video making complete sense.
