MUSIC VIDEO DRAFT 1 – ROUGH CUT

Below is our first rough cut of our performance video shoot:

WHAT WENT WELL:

  • Our mise en scene created by costume, makeup, lighting and setting worked effectively to portray the moods we were aiming for.
  • The lip syncing was in time and always matched up to the song so editing to the beat and words was much easier.
  • We quickly learnt how to use Adobe Premier Pro so we are using all the tools and helpful features are being used as they should be.
  • A variety of shots were used when filming to ensure the music video is interesting and eye catching throughout; diminishing the possibility of our audience becoming bored.

WHAT WE NEED TO CHANGE:

  • We need to use quicker cuts in the editing stage to keep the video fast paced and professional.
  • We need to add in the extra filming we got based on our narrative to make our storyline clear.
  • We need to clean up some cuts and make sure the two different outfits and moods used in the white studio and put into the music video at the right times.

Having reflected on our music video draft 1 and shoots so far, we know exactly what to improve and work on from the start of next yeart, this means the post production stages of our video will run smoothly and quickly.

SHOOT 1 REFLECTION

OVERALL REFLECTION:

Our first shoot was all for performance rather than narrative, we used the afternoon to film in the white studio, we chose this over the black studio because we knew our model (Lily Wyatt Nicolle) would have one outfit with black clothing. Due to our intricate planning and careful costuming to connote the right mise en scene, we finished on time and we were very pleased with all the footage we shot.

PHOTOS FROM THE DAY OF FILMING:

WHAT WENT WELL:

  • We played the song whenever filming so lip-syncing was effective and in time, making the editing and post production stages easier.
  • We framed our model in the middle of the camera, this allows us to play around with spacing during editing stages and also creates a nice shadow in the backdrop.
  • We forward planned with the production meeting agenda so costume and lighting was utilised to build up the right mise en scene, as well as having all the correct professional equipment.
  • Our model was confident so the acting and star image looks authentic and eye-catching.
  • Niamh and I work well as a team so directing was cohesive, this lead to us both being happy with outcomes and the shoot was definitely positive and constructive.
  • The variety of shots we took utilise different movements, angles and lighting, meaning we can edit to the beat in post production stages to keep the video interesting and engaging.

WHAT TO IMPROVE:

  • Ensure all shots are in focus and aren’t blurry, this can cause issues in post production stages.
  • Bring spare batteries for the lights because one kept dying during filming.
  • We could have used dollys or pans when filming for more variety of shot – we are using these in the narrative shoot though.
  • We could have experimented with a projector during filming to save time in post production and editing stages.
  • Change up the framing more to the side of the camera etc.
  • We will need to colour correct our videos to make them more professional.
