THE MUSIC VIDEO I ASSESSED:

MY PEER ASSESSMENT GRID (PDF LINKED)

OVERVIEW OF WHY I GAVE THIS ASSESSMENT:

The grid above displays the success criteria for a music video that would meet all the typical design, production and editing conventions. I chose to analyse this video because it had a very strong narrative that perfectly matched up the the lyrics of the song; meaning when I deconstructed the video I found the mise en scene created was visually pleasing and effective. A strong theme was indicated and the actor portrayed the role well, in addition the lip syncing was displayed throughout and the song was a good choice as it was easy to sing along to. In post production stages, the team clearly edited to the beat, however the editing of effects and lighting wasn’t ideal. To truly represent the vibe of the song I think it would have been useful to use coloured overlays when filming or adding these in when editing, all the lighting was quite high key and this didn’t match the feeling of the song at all (hence why I placed this at basic). A tripod was clearly used and there wasn’t any shaking in the camera when filming, this highlights they used all the right equipment and creates a professional persona. The star image of the singer was effective in the black and white lip syncing snippets, having these more professional lip syncing snippets tied in with acting and the narrative meant I was able to understand the bold star image and know who the star was.

WATCHING THIS VIDEO ALLOWED ME TO GATHER THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA FOR WHEN I MAKE MY VIDEO:

  • Use effects on lighting throughout my entire video to tie all of it together
  • Create a strong mise en scene with all parts of CLAMPS to ensure my narrative is followed
  • Maintain a simple storyline that follows the lyrics, meaning it can be followed without confusion
  • Use an actor/actress that will lip sync confidently and use facial expressions
  • Create a star image persona by using outfit and editing that links to the genre
  • Use a tripod for still shots
  • Edit to the beat, possibly with montages and quick cuts/snippets
