Narrative Exploration:

Video 1:

All the memories are saved in photographs. This video is made up of all the photographs and videos from his youth to his age now. They describe how quickly live changes, and how you have to live in the moment.

Video 2:

Dolls see everything. This music video is about dolls in a dollhouse, that see everything going on in the outside world. They feel the need to be perfect, when actually they aren’t. This is shown when they drink and smoke.

Video 3:

Love’s a game. This music video is a break-up scenario. It shows a couple that has been playing with each others feelings. It also displays a woman whos angry at her partner and breaks his things. This is too get revenge on him.

3 quirky narratives:
  • Man falls in love with a mannequin,
  • Cat gets lost in space,
  • Woman is burnt by an explosive volcano,

Airplane Narrative Music Video Sequence:

Airplane Narrative Music Video Sequence:

This is a music video I created on Adobe Premiere Pro. It’s a video, made up of small clips, on how to make a paper airplane. We learnt how to clip videos, unlink the audio to videos, and add transitions and effects to videos. My group made a storyboard to help us know what scenes we needed to shoot. However, I changed the order around- to fit the narrative better.

Reflection:

This task has helped me understand how to use Adobe Premier Pro. I’ve learnt how to create a video (of small clips) that convey a narrative. I also learnt how to film a series of videos, on a tripod, that work together to make the story. I now understand that you need to take many different angles and zooms in videos for it to be effective. This will help me for when I make my music video. Since I’ve learnt how to do basic editing in the app, I will be be able to expand my knowledge when it comes to editing my music video. The biggest thing I’ve learnt, is that you cannot fix bad videos (shoots). No matter how much you edit something, it has to be good raw videos to start with. The way to get successful videos is too capture still clips with good lighting (that fit in with the mise-en-scene). If you don’t use a tripod, the videos are most likely to look bad.

What Helps To Make A Good Music Video:
  • Technical conventions, such as; lip-syncing, editing to the beat, framing, and composition. These are important because they make the video aesthetically pleasing for the viewers to watch.
  • Narrative and performance ratio. It’s good for a music video to have a meaning and to entertain us because it helps us understand (relate) to the lyrics.
  • The stars’ representation, such as; their values, beliefs, and attitudes. This helps us understand who the artist is.
  • How the videos are styled, designed, filmed, and edited. This is used to convey the star image and to promote them.
My Favorite Music Video:

My Peer Assessment:

Camera:
The tripod has been used throughout the video. It’s particularly used on the close-ups to frame the star lip-syncing. This emphasizes her actions (twisting chains around her neck). It also adds meaning to her actions. It conveys a sense of despair and danger like she’s getting abused by the faceless man. The shots are visually engaging. They draw the viewer in, making them what to see what she does next. This music video has considered the rule of thirds, composition, and depth of field. The rule of thirds is used to keep the camera straight and not tilted. It also means the focus of the composition is in the middle of the screen. There is a mix of shot distances, like extreme close-ups and long shots. The extreme close-ups are used when the star is lip-syncing the words. Whereas, the long shots are used when she’s tangling herself up and being threatened by the man.

Editing:
The editing effects contribute to the video. In particular, the doubling effect makes the eyry sense greater. It implies the video is dark, and the main star is almost losing her mind. The editing suggests to us that she’s trapped. It shows the narrative in the small clips, that break up the performance, which conveys the story. The story fits the lyrics and it’s filmed in 180 rules. There isn’t a variety of band sequences as the song is sung by one singer.

Mise-En-Scene:
The mise-en-scene represents the narrative and reflects the genre. For example, the deathly make-up and bandages used to create scars/bruises/scrapes relate to the theme of death. Her red lipstick also represents blood. She’s in a cream hospital-like robe, which is another link to death and illness. Her hair is slightly messy like it hasn’t been brushed. Then the prop (chain) and the man (without a face) are used to show she can’t move. Like she’s chained in place. The editing has made the narrative clearer. They have used a variety of shot transitions to move between the performance and narrative. The editing also links to the beats and lyrics of the music. This music video is a good representation of what the success criteria is looking for.

Music Video Form & Conventions:

Music Video Form & Conventions:

Introduction:

For this task, I looked at three different music videos with different narrative/performance ratios and a range of genres. This helped me understand what typical conventions are in music videos. I understand that the blueprint is to have a story of some kind. The narrative in a video is the meaning behind the lyrics. The performance is how the artist sings his lyrics to the audience. The genre of music videos affects the way they perform and display the star’s image. In order to deconstruct what elements are in music videos, I split my evaluation into three sections- that illustrate how they were made. In the performance, the artists lip-sync the lyrics. We completed a peer assessment google document form, for our favourite music video.

Focus Forward:

This task has taught me what features make up magazines. We’ve identified what the blueprints are. This will help me when making my own music video because I’ll know what rules to follow. For example, I’ve learnt to always use a tripod whilst filming. This will make the video easier and clearer to watch. I’ve also learnt that I need to match my editing effects with the genre of the music. I now feel confident that I know what will make my music video successful. The 3 music videos I researched, are particularly good as they have different performance/ narrative ratios.
