Draft 1 – Front cover and feedback

Before the end of the week, you will have Draft 1 of your Cover.

  • Remember to use photoshop before you export it to indesign.
  • Use your moodboards and look for inspiration about layout, fonts, graphic design elements and backgrounds.
  • Create an exciting background – play with opacity, transparency, see through text, various font sizes, different letter sizes in the masthead.
  • Remember not usually more than 2 – 3 fonts on one page – but they can be of the same family i.e. upper case, lower case, italicised etc.
  • Make your cover model BIG!
  • Ensure you have a main cover star, masthead, plug, main cover line, cover lines, inserts with captions, date, issue, barcode.

Once you have drafted it (there is no need to have final cover lines etc – you can just use XXXX) you will need to get some feedback from a student in the class.

FEEDBACK

Ask another Media Student to comment on your choice of: font, photo, design and layout.

Questions to ask:

    • What genre of music is the magazine featuring?
    • Describe the front cover star using adjectives – their star image?
    • Are there areas where the integration and copy is distracting?
    • What aspects do you consider conventional or unconventional?
  • Summarise and then act on their feedback with @ 5 specific targets to address.

You will then use this feedback to create Draft 2 and summarise what has changed since Draft 1.

Every time you upload a draft you need to address:

WHAT’S NEW (CHANGES) & WHAT’S NEXT (TARGETS)?
