Music Video Draft 2 (Includes shoot 2 footage)

Here is draft 2 of our music video, below is some positive and negative feedback that we gave ourselves when watching the clip a few times. We noticed some things we need to change and some things that went well.

Reflection –

  • We need more footage – performing footage, nature clips, and lots more narrative, as from putting it together we feel as if we don’t have enough to convey the story and we keep reusing old footage which lessens the quality of the video.
  • We need to get more various angles like high and low so we can convey her emotion clearly and show her feeling happy versus sad.
  • When we go to edit we need to play with the clips editing-wise and add colour, different effects and transitions, and lighting changes to add contrast between clips.
  • We also noticed that a black border was very obvious around some of the footage that we took on our phones so we have to rescale it.

-What went well:

  • Close-ups were nice and showed a connection from the performer to the audience, and her emotion
  • Nature clips helped display narrative, we picked some relevant places such as the graffiti area around the bowling alley.

Design Skills 2

We learnt many new ways to improve our music video and fix mistakes when we searched around premier pro.

  • For example, when looking at the footage taken on our phones, the scale was wrong for the frame. However we used the Gaussian blur effect after layering and scaling the clips onto each other and this created an interesting clip look that fixed the issue.
  • We also experimented more with transitions, using dip to white and dip to black effects depending on the lighting of the new clip we placed in. This helped create a more intense atmosphere after the transition for each clip.
  • The blur helped our videos by saving us from a mistake with our photography but it also added an impresser double image effect. This also had an impact on the star by showing her actions and emotions more clearly.

Shoot 2 Reflection (Narrative)

On our second shoot, we revisited the Bowling alley and went into town to take more footage:

  • We explored further around the bowling alley and found a graffiti wall which was perfect for our narrative where the star is distressed and confused.
  • We also shot footage in the paths in the area to add a nature theme to our video, for example shooting grass and the sky to fill in spaces where there was no singing to lip-sync in the video.
  • Next we went into town where we used the rainbow steps to take some more seemingly candid shots of our model being happy and carefree, in addition to the steps we visited a colorful and positive graffiti wall which was really good as the brightness and happy vibe of the wall added another level of positive energy to the shoot.

However, there were some things we need to take into account for our next shoot:

  • We did’t get enough footage so we will have to take more lip-syncing videos in the future so that we have enough footage.
  • We took some really good videos of nature but on our phones and so when we uploaded them to edit the scale was wrong which takes a lot of time to edit into the correct frame.
  • We didn’t take as many narrative shots as we could have meaning there are many gaps still in the video.

Video Narrative Story/Shot sheets

Here is our storyboard for our narrative. We have kept it simple with minimal scenes as we feel that we shouldn’t confuse the audience with too many scenes. We will use shots such as pan, tracking as well as high and low angle shots for when the model is moving around and walking through nature and high and low angle shots to reinforce her emotion throughout the video We will also take close-ups to give an abstract feel and zoom in on the model’s emotion.

Narrative Development

This exercise helped us to understand what element we needed to add in to our video shooting in order to portray a clear and interesting narrative. By completing a simple narrative structure we identified key parts of our story line and what elements we had already used:

  • We identified that our narrative is amplified which gives up freedom to experiment but also means that the video is linked to the song and narrative
  • We also found that we need to involve more parallelism and binary oppositions in our performance such as feeling trapped Vs freedom
  • We found that so far, our video is not episodic, it is abstract and thematic. We will continue to link the theme to the narrative, just not in a specific order.
  •  Also by doing this exercise it was obvious what themes we are wanting to include and what else we need to take the time to go and do.
  • When doing a narrative it’s actually best to leave them incomplete because it then makes your audience want to watch it again whereas if you complete it they have seen it and won’t want to watch it again.

Music Video Draft 1 – Rough Cut

Here is a short draft of our music video in the White Studio.

What went well:

  • Artist turned up on time
  • Model brought all clothes
  • Knew the words
  • Able to work premiere pro easily
  • Remembered all of the equipment

Things to work on:

  • Some of the selected footage is out of frame
  • Need various angels; ie high and low
  • Want more different shots such as pan and Ariel to keep variety
  • More interaction with the performer to get more personal
  • Use various locations to add a bit of pace
  • We need to shoot in different places to add more depth the the video and make it more interesting
  • We need to add in more variation of mis-en-scene such as darker makeup to portray differing emotions

Shoot 1 Reflection (Performance)

For our first shoot, we used the white studio to focus on getting clear shots of lip-syncing to the words of the song and also to help certain types of mise-en-scene to stand out such as a blue top and pink eye shadow.  We got used to using different angles to keep the audience interested in the video which we found that we could also translate into filming out of the studio.

After thinking it through we decided that studio shots weren’t enough to keep our audience satisfied, so we decided that taking some shots outside such as on the common or in an urban area for contrast, such as in town, would be a good idea. This is also because by taking the shots outside of the studio we realized we could use more dramatic long shot and mid shots as well as incorporate more interactive features in the video.

We found that the camera and tripod we good to use instead of a phone ad it kept the video footage clear and not shaky, we could also focus far better with the camera on the model than with a phone which was important as we were in a studio meaning focus had to be perfect for a good quality video.

Another positive to working in the studio was the weather, this meant that no matter the weather, our footage would be fine.
