This is our first ‘test’ shoot, which is done to practice ice our skills with the camera, as well as practicing composition and framing. This will aid us when we are doing our first performance shoot as we will be able to correct mistakes found in this shoot. It also helped us gain an idea of what our star will be wearing in the music video.
What Went Well:
We explored a range of different angles and camera compositions
Range of different shots in editing
Targets:
In some shots, phones / camera bags can be seen etc, ruining continuity
The building we were shot in was extremely warm, this wasn’t helped by the jacket I was wearing
The uses and gratifications theory by Blumler and Katz suggests that media users have an active role in how they use media and therefore how they consume music. We have to reach out to our audience, educate, entertain and allow for social interactions to come as a result of my music video.
Aswell as this, Halls theory says that there are hidden messages in media and that it is up to the audience to decode these messages and understand them. These messages can be interpreted in many different ways, the ways these are interpreted are dependent on the world around them.
The target audience for our song is most likely a millennial, who dresses in a very British way, wearing Fred Perry polo shirts and Adidas swell as other sports casual brands, as well as this they are likely to be a football fan, either supporting Liverpool, Manchester United, or their local team. It is important for the industry to know their audiences so they can promote or advertise in a way that will directly reach and appeal to them, doing so will increase the likely hood of the music being interacted with, making money.
This task is important for our test shoot as it lets us know the typical camera shots for this genre, as our music video will have to fit in. For our test shoot we will have to create a star image as well as a music video that is both ordinary and extra-ordinary.
We chose the song ‘D’yer Wanna Be A Spaceman’ as it is done by a fairly well known band, but a B-side to one of their singles. The song has a theme of growing up and moving on, which everyone can relate to, the song is also catchy.
This task was beneficial to us and it allowed us to see what locations we had access to, aswell as strengths and weaknesses to our group. This allows us to make our group work effiecently and do the best work we can.
My song pitch is to do the song “D’Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman” by Oasis. The performance will contain our artist (Callum Wood), miming along and playing the acoustic guitar to the song, sat on a stool. Around him will be a large range of children / toddlers toys. The narration will be about the artist, growing up and his interests changing, while this is happening the toys around him will move and change (using stop motion). The reason I chose this song is due to it catchiness, aswell as it being a well known band, but a not very well known song.
I haven’t seen your face round
Since I was a kid
You’re bringing back those memories
Of the things that we did
You’re hangin round
And climbing trees
Pretending to fly
D’yer wanna be a spaceman
And live in the sky
You got how many bills to pay
And how many kids
And you forgot about
The things that we did
The town where we’re living
Has made you a man
And all of your dreams
Are washed in the sand
Well it’s alright
It’s alright
Who are you and me to say
What’s wrong and what’s right
Do you still feel like me
We sit down here
And we shall see
We can talk
And find common ground
And we can just forget
About feeling down
We can just forget
About life in this town.
It’s funny how your dreams
Change as you’re growing old
You don’t wanna be no spaceman
You just want gold
All the dream stealers
Are lying in wait
But if you wanna be a spaceman
It’s still not too late
Well it’s alright
And it’s alright
Who are you and me to say
What’s wrong and what’s right
Do you still feel like me
We sit down here
And we shall see
We can talk
And find common ground
And we can just forget
About feeling down
We can just forget
About life in this town.
Above is my first attempt at lip syncing. Lip syncing is very important to a music video as if done wrong can ruin any sort of atmosphere in the video, and the viewers will focus on the wrong lip syncing. Lip syncing has to be perfect, if it isn’t it can distract the viewer, If I were to do this task again I would have asked the opposite gender to lip sync, as it looks very strange with a man lip syncing to a woman’s lyrics. From this task I have learnt to use Wevideo, a free browser based editing software, which will be very useful in future. If i were to do the editing again, I would add more clips inbetween the intro of the video, as it is very long.
I enjoy this student music video due to its overall Mise-en-scene, throughout the video, a clear story is painted of an executioner having second thoughts about his job. One thing that clearly stands out is the costume design, the military items really add a new layer to the scene. The camera is also used throughout the video to great use, my favorite shot is the low angle used when he the executioner is running away, along with the closeup of him looking down the gun. The black and white filter used to show the past also creates a difference between what previously has happened and what is in the present.
