The Media Ecology

Creative Critical Reflection 1

All aspects of the Media Environment are interconnected. All 8 of the aspects of media are all interdependent on each other to form the Media Ecology. The Media Ecology impacts society’s perceptions and feeling of media and helps understand how everything is interconnected into a big circle with many connections.

Firstly, the audience is important as without an audience the creators would have no reason to create a videos for anyone. The government would have no rules and regulations to make as there would be nobody to follow the rules. Without an audience no money can be made and the main goal of producing media is to make money.

The creators of media need technology as without the hardware and software then the creators are unable to release media to make money. Without the creators the distributors will be unable to distribute any media which will end up with the loss of jobs and the loss of money. Social media plays a really important role as it is a platform to these creators to make their content on.

Money is also very important as it allows the institutions to spend more money on better software, hardware and a bigger budget for the next media that there are going to release. Institutions like BBC and ITV use their money smartly and aim the media they produce towards a specific target audience.

With all of the information that I have learnt I will make my media magazine with multiple companies and institutions as you cannot make a media text if you are isolated away from other aspects of media. This allows me to get an audience to release my media to so they can consume it, distributors to distribute the magazines to the supermarkets that are going to be selling them. The government helps with the magazine as they release all the rules and guidelines of what I can and cannot write or show in my magazine.

The media environment can be very manipulative, persuasive and can influence our feeling and values. This is because many stories are being written everyday about tragedies that have occurred somewhere in the world. This makes the audience and me feel very lucky that they are not the ones that are in the horrible situation. Although these stories are printed everyday there is no reliance to say that they are true or not so we must interpret them with whether we think they are true or not.

My Media Diet

Creative Critical Reflection 1

I am a prosumer of Media. A prosumer is someone is consumes and produces a media text. A media must have two people or groups of people. The producer of the media and the audience. The producer and the audience go hand in hand. Without an audience then the producer has no reason to make the media. If the producer doesn’t make the media then the audience have no media to consume.

For a media text to compile an audience it needs to include the 4 uses and gratifications. These 4 uses allows the consumer to be engaged in the media text. For this to happen the media must be either entertaining, informative, give the consumer a personal identity and provoke a social interaction, or a collection of the 4, as this engages the target audience and promotes the media to a wider audience or market making the producer more money. The use of the font, colours and the language all participate into grabbing the consumers attention and making them either return to watch another video, or buy the next big product. This is why I used a bold font so it stood out and was easy to read.

An example of entertaining media is watching YouTube or listening to music on Apple Music or Spotify. This media is consumed for the audiences own personal relaxation and enjoyment, but media like reality tv shows are social interaction as you can vote for the person that you want to stay or go. This allows the audience to feel involved with the series and feel like they have a voice. Similarly, the government use social media to campaign and ask for feedback or to vote in the candidates. Snapchat and Instagram are also social interaction as it allows you to chat to people no matter where you are. This is significant as it allows for more money to be made by the producer as well as being able to talk to your friend that might be on holiday in Hawaii.

The videos you watch, the music you listen to and the people you vote for on a reality tv show all develop your personal identity. Your personal identity is finding media that reflects or mimics your characteristics. This makes the audience feel unique and allows for social interaction with people who are interested in the same or similar niche to you. This social interaction also promotes the product and makes more money for the institutions which is the main goal of media.

Producers such as news agencies or journalists make informative media to give the reader a shocking story or the lasted update to consume. This allows the reader to feel interconnected with the rest of the world as they can see what is happening around the world. This earns the producer large amounts of money as the newspaper orĀ  news company are likely releasing new and exciting stories for the consumers to read or watch.

Those are the 4 uses and gratifications that I am going to include in my music magazine. The aim of the magazine is to make it eye catching and interesting for the consumer so they can really invest into the magazine. I will make sure to use bright colours and imposing images to give the reader relevant and relatable information for the audience to enjoy.
