Narrative Sequence

Preliminary Video Tasks

Before starting any project that involves filming, you must have a clear idea of what you are going to be filming. This can easily be done by making a story board. This helps you establish which shots you are going to shoot and what the talent is going to be doing in the shot.

Below you can see the storyboard that me and my group made for our prompt we were given ‘Getting in a car’.

When making a storyboard you have to also consider the angle and framing of that shots that you are going to shoot. For example, on the bottom of the post-it notes tells my groups what we are going to be doing. WA means wide angle etc. Just because you have made storyboard does not mean that shots cannot be added or taken away.

Storyboard

When filming a music video, short film or other clip you need to make sure that you are filming for narrative sense, you cut to close ups for dramatic effect and continuity is considered throughout.

You also need to have a variety of shots to make the clip more interesting and not too repetitive and creates an atmosphere.

To edit the short film, we used Adobe Premiere Pro to add all of the clips together and make a short film. This is called post-production

In post-production me and my group decided that we were going to ditch some of the shots that we had made as they were either too shaky or they did not work with the narrative.

Narrative Sequence

What went well:

  • It was a good first attempt at filming
  • We had some good shots and angles
  • The post-production went well

Even better if:

  • Some of the shots were a bit shaky
  • Some of the shots could have been retaken if we had the time
  • We should have shot things more than once

But other than that the entire process went well.

This will help me with my music video because I now know more about Adobe Premiere Pro than I did before and it will allow me to know the types of transitions and shots to use in my music video when I come to make it.
