Final Draft – Music Video

Music Video

This is the final draft of my music video and I am happy with the end result. There are a few conventions that needed to be considered to make it how we envisioned it. For example, our star image has to be conveyed in a certain way so there is a clear difference in ordinary and extraordinary (Dyer) or binary oppositions of narrative issues that we could include in our music video  to shed a light on the situation.

This final draft was just us changing a few final touches to make it the best that we believe that it could be.

If I was to make the Music Video again, I would:

  • Change the song as the narrative was very hard to structure
  • When shooting the music video, add more movement to the shots
  • Make the band better at playing the instruments

Draft 4 & Peer Feedback

Music Video

Below is the fourth draft of my groups music video:

Changes

  • Filled in missing gaps
  • Changed clips that were not in sync
  • Added more visual effects
  • Swapped out some clips for close up

Peer Feedback

Peer 1 –

  • Variety of shots and distances particularly your narrative film
  • MES which goes with the genre
  • More prominent lip syncing to allow the viewer to see the actor singing the song
  • Some parts where you are not cutting to the beat of the music.

Peer 2

  • On genre, all costumes match each other.
  • All shots are steady, and the pans are stable too.
  • Some lip syncing but could be more consistent and constant throughout video (more close ups)
  • Variety of locations for performance and narrative which all link to the story well.
  • Add more close ups for the performance scenes, cut in and out of close up more frequently. (in our video we used the crop tool if we didn’t have a close up filmed)
  • Multiple angles concerning the animals and when the young girl is playing with them, this adds depth and conveys the genre.
  • Although you move locations for the performance the angle is always straight on. Could you add any side angles of performance or low/high.
  • I think there is a good amount of movement in the narrative which tells the story line.
  • Acting of animals and the young girl tells a credible story.
  • Shorten the clip of the girl ripping the paper – as you see that she drops it.
  • A good amount of close up shots for the instruments.
  • Plenty of long shots throughout.
  • You could also add some close up shots of maybe the animals feet as they walk ? To add more variety.
  • More close ups – use the crop filter if there are none filmed, we did this frequently in our video.
  • A variety of instruments used and edited to the beat well.
  • The colour filter used during the ‘count in’ adds character and looks really good.
  • I think you could do more of these or something similar to add vibrance – maybe on the other clips of Emma to make it cohesive.
  • You have cut from clip to clip on beat, including where there is use of instruments.
  • The transition using the ukulele is really good.
  • Add more transitions using effects to make the movement between performance and narrative consistent.
  • Costume and location.
  • Transition from one performance scene to another using ukulele.
  • Narrative and how the story line is addressed.
  • There is a clip of Emma where she is speaking/lipsyncing but it is not in time to the lyrics. (2:35mins)

Peer 3

  • You have included some great shots of the band in the performance.
  • I especially liked the editing of the color-changing shirt to the beat.
  • I understood the narrative at the beginning.
  • Great mise-en-scene; use of animal costumes and setting of a real estate agent.
  • You executed the transition from the guitar to the performance really well.
  • Good use of various camera movements and shots taken from different angles/distances.
  • Black cuts are the beginning are distracting and don’t add much to the video.
  • Didn’t understand the significance of the posterize, cartoony effect on animals.
  • Some blank bits occurred, but I assume you are planning on adding in more clips.
  • There’s a clip, a close-up of the bass guitar, where there is no movement of the performer playing it at the beginning when the music is playing; so maybe cut the beginning of that clip so that the performer is consistently playing it.
  • Girl running away – the colour changes in the clip of the slow-motion run so make sure to apply the same attributes to both clips.
  • Clips at the end need stabilising.

Using my peers feedback, we are going to make the necessary changes that we agree with to improve our music video and make it to the best of our ability.

What we will specifically address

  • Stabilising clips
  • Girl running away
  • Add stuff to blank bits
  • Cut to the beat
  • Prominent lip syncing if possible

Teachers Feedback (Draft 3)

Music Video

My teacher has given my group and I improvements to add to Draft 4 of our music video. Below is the screencastify from my teacher:

Improvements my teacher suggested:

  • As soon as vocals begin, close up of singer
  • Singer not singing “WOAH”‘s
  • Close up of instruments
  • CLOSE UPS
  • “Cartoonify” animals
  • Visual effects of duck-duck-goose
  • Rearrange clips so animals come out before duck-duck-goose
  • Stabilise pan upwards on daughter
  • Change close-up of electric guitar
  • Some of the media if offline
  • POV finger wagging
  • Add animal clips in
  • Quicker pace editing towards the end
  • Edit repeated clip
  • Zoom in on rejoice
  • Breaks 180 degree rule

Specsavers Feedback

Music Video

We had a professional cinematography come into our lesson and they gave us a lot of tips on what we could improve on in our music video. He also told us us about some shortcuts in Premiere Pro that would make it easier for us to construct our video.

Premiere Pro CS6: Moving Images and Effect Controls | Larry Jordan

One of the things that he told us about was keyframing, this is when you are telling the software to make an automatic change to the video at a certain point. This made it so that we could scale the clip when we thought it would be appropriate.

Music Video Draft 2

Music Video

Below is our second draft of our Music Video and my Self Assessment:

What went well:

  • All clips are sequenced well and in the correct order
  • We filmed the video with the intent of editing it
  • It looks like a real music video

Improvements:

  • It is very basic
  • It needs some special effects
  • Some of the clips are blurry

Our teacher gave us some feedback too, she told us to:

  • Scale and position clips
  • Add some special effects to the animals

Shoot 2 Reflection (Narrative)

Music Video

When shooting our narrative for our music video we ended up shooting it twice. We shot our first narrative and then realised that we didn’t like it so we ended up changing the narrative as we were not happy with our first narrative. Below is some footage from our narrative shoot:

Our new narrative consists of a buy of land who wants to build a hotel when a forest is currently situated, her daughter then realises that there are animals living in the forest and tries to convince her mother to not build a hotel, at the end she decides to make a nature reserve rather than a hotel.

We chose a new narrative as we shot our first narrative and we all agreed that it was not a good shoot so we reshot our narrative during the holidays.

What Went Well:

  • We filmed enough footage to make the structure of our video
  • The narrative footage is well shot
  • There is a variety of shots
  • The day went well

Improvements:

  • Shoot more close-ups of animals
  • Create more of an interactions between viewer and the animals
  • Although we have enough we could have shot more

Production Meeting Agenda for Narrative Shoot

To make sure we know what the model is supposed to wear for the shoot, we have made a Production Meeting Agenda (PMA). This a form of planning means that everyone is aware what is happening with the shoot and how the star image should be represented. This is all in anticipation of editing a final music video in September.

Narrative Photo Board/Shot List

Music Video

In order to make sure that we are shooting the correct shots for our narrative shoot, we have made a narrative photo board to shoot the correct thing. We have to make sure when filming that it all makes narrative sense and there is no continuity errors. There are some things that we need to make sure that we have to do in our music video.

  • Cut to close up
  • Have a variety of shot distances
  • A good narrative structure
  • A good narrative themes

This will help us make a good music video as now we are able to know exactly what to film to make sure that our shoot is successful.
