Evaluation of Shoot

Some good shots from our digipak shoot:

What went well:

  • Portrayed our star image and genre well,
  • We used a confident and comfortable model which is portrayed to our audience,
  • The black studio made her easy to cut out and emphasized the vibe,
  • We included depth and dimension,
  • The mise en scene of makeup and costume portrayed our star image well and met our plan,
  • The use of mid shots makes the digipak fit into others of the pop and rnb genre.

Things to improve:

  • Some of the backdrops may need to be edited in photoshop as not big enough and also not a true black,
  • Some of the photos were also unable to be used due to the lighting or quality.

Contact Sheets

These are our contact sheets from our digipak photo shoot:

The photos we use from these shots will be used as they are representative of our model’s star image and convey a powerful, strong, sultry narrative that we aim to illustrate through our digipak. The extra images can also be used on our social media page and will work well for promotions, behind-the-scenes content and sponsored posts.

Social Media Page Terminology

It is important before we make our artist’s own social media platform to be aware of and understand its technical conventions. this can help us to correctly develop our marketing campaign and promotion of our star and her music. Analysing this social media page also taught us how different artists use and post on their social media differently, and so in order to attract an audience we must use these conventions.

In this task I analysed and explained the features of pop star Mimi Webbs Instagram page, allowing me to get a better understanding of how artists in the pop genre promote themselves on social media, and therefore how to properly reflect our own star.

Audience Interaction with Social Media

When planning out a social media page for an artist, it is important to understand the technical conventions that are included in order for the page and posts to promote and successful for the artists. Understanding which posts entertain, inform and promote a personal identity and social interaction is vital to creating a successful social media page. Artists use integrated advertising and different types of marketing to promote themselves and their content, as social media is a very efficient way to reach their audiences.

Unfortunately due to technical difficulties, we were unable to record a screencastify anyalysing the technical conventions of a star’s social media page, if all had gone well, this is the script we would have used.

This is the Instagram page of Jorja Smith, a popular, young RnB artist, her star image is representative of the image we would like to portray through our music video and digipak.

She has an even mix of events that will portray her as extraordinary and ordinary, posts like; tour behind the scenes, photoshoots, and days at home will allow her fans to not only look up to her but see her as a personable relatable character.

Her feed is vibrant in photoshoots and events yet sultry in posts at home or with other celebrities and designers.

AIDA encompasses attraction, interest, desire, and a call to action. For example, on Jorja smith’s page, her humble manner is communicated through self-recorded videos where she talks to her fans and behind-the-scenes content surrounding new releases and performances, this attracts her target audience and sparks interest to know more.

Desire is established through her extraordinary image, her fanbase looks up to her as attractive, strong and powerful, leading to her sometimes seeming mysterious or above us as an audience. Desire is vital in order to keep an artist exciting and thriving in growing their fanbase.

A call to action isn’t obvious when looking at Jorja’s page, this is intended to convey her as loving to her fans instead of reliant on her fans, her PR team keeps advertisement techniques private and elusive. Despite this, Jorja Smith regularly posts updates about release dates, new albums, upcoming appearances and new venues. This is a subtle prompt to her audience to keep them engaged and invested.

When creating a social media page for an artist, it is crucial that all aspects of Blumler and Katz’s uses and gratification theory is taken into account. This includes the criteria of entertainment, information, personal identity and social interaction. Jorja’s PR team have clearly taken all of this into account because it is reflected immediately when viewing her page.

Her personal identity is present in everyday, natural, life update posts that take up more of her feed. Information is harder to find as she doesn’t have highlights like we intend to, she does have a link in her bio that helps to access information; entertainment is clear in her posts of performances, tour and concerts.

She comes across as a fun, charismatic, loving individual through her interactions with fans online and in real life; this leads into social interaction that can be seen when she replies to comments from fans, does meet and greets and promotes events where she is to be able to interact personally with followers.

This social media page is a good example of integrated advertising, her website reflects the same vibe as the instagram page and consistency flows throughout all platforms and real life events. It encourages us to use guerilla marketing and viral marketing when promoting our star because it is a great benefit of social media and artists seem to use it to their advantage when growing their star image.

Digipak Mockup

This is a mockup with ideas for our album cover, using conventions typically associated with the RnB genre, and artists we have taken inspiration from.

This is the colour palette we intend to use:

This task allowed us to think of what repertoire of elements we need to include in our digipak and album cover in order to portray the RnB genre of our artist as well as our star image. This must be developed well in order to appeal to our target audience.

Conventions Analysis

This is an analysis of a female RnB artist’s album cover and the typical conventions of covers from this genre:

Many elements used on an album can convey different things and help the artist represent their star image and genre to the genre.

This analysis allowed me to understand the conventional repertoire of elements of the RnB genre, and the blueprint for these types of album covers. Understanding what conventions of an artist’s album cover provides connotations of certain emotions, sexualities, and images can be very helpful when creating our own image. It is important to know what to include or not include in order to portray and infer our star image, therefore produce something the target audience will accept.

The Look Book

This is a mood board we made in order to gather inspiration for our Digipack and other content using the app Padlet.

This has helped us to gain more of an understanding of our artists’ genre, and the repertoire of elements that define the style and brand we are aiming to convey, it is important to understand what will be preferred reading and entertaining for the audience. This also allows us to create a coherent brand across other platforms and content such as our social media page.

These covers are the blueprint and inspiration for our artist and star image, we want her to be described as sexy, cool, independent, attractive and interesting.

Our Mission Statement

The song GO which we used to create our music video will be one of many songs on our artist Monroes’ album that we must promote. In order to build her brand and star image, we must be aware of our mission statement, audience, competition, and unique selling point.

It is important to know and be aware of all these elements so that our star image and branding are correct in order to guarantee the audience will not reject the text. Understanding and using integrated advertising will help promote our artist and album well
