Previous Students Work

Below is the video that I assesed:

While playing and analysing this music videos I focused on a couple of the main conventions in the music video these key elements are what made the music video realistic and succesful- The mise-on-scene was represented well throughout with the stars costuming and make-up matching the common themes and issues in the narrative, the multiple camera angles to add excitment and a different perspective for the audience, the editing was very natural it worked well with the genre and the themes and isses in the music video.

By decoding and deconstructing this past students work I have now gained a deeper understanding of what I need to do to make my music video succesful. I have leant:

  • The star image has to be represented well and also has to match the narrative of the music video
  • Editing to the beat of the music is a great way to add effect and gives the music video a more proffesional look
  • The mise-en-scene is important and helps the audience engage and understand the narrative of the music video

These key elements of the music video criteria will help me in my music magazine as I know what I am going to be marked on as well as knowing what a succesful music video looks like. Looking at previous students work has helped a lot now with me starting to think about concepts and narratives for my music videos as well as in the future when making my music video if I have these keep points in my mind I will gain a higher grade by matching the criteria.

Music Video Form & Conventions

Before I start my music video it is important that I understand what narratives and perfromaces create a unique and succesful msuic video that will keep the audience entertained throughout. From my research I found out that the longer music videos such as ‘lover of light’ which was almost 6 minuetes the audience start to get bored of the vdeo as I found myself doing compared to the shorter and more compact music videos.

I also found out from my research the blue print of a music video and can take into some key concepts into mind for when I come to create my music video in the near future some key factors I learnt are below:

  • Important if you have a narrative to pick a topic or story- line that is heartfelt and that the target audience will want to engage with and also a song that is anachronic to the lyrics helps the audience understand the storyline or the narrative
  • I gained the knwolege that for my music video to be succesful I will have to engage the audience and illustrate an interesting and eye-grabbing music video
  • Make sure that the music video doesnt have a traditional beggining, middle and end as this can cause the audience to only watch the video once as they know what to expect
  • Make sure that the lipsinging and editing is done well meaning the lipsinging is in line with the music otherwise the video is completely thrown off
  • What I also found from my research is that with the mainly performance focused videos the mise-un-scene needs to be represented more as you have no narrative for the audience to watch
  • From the research I developed the knowlege that with the performance heavy music videos the camera angles are more exagarated to match the music for example in the BeyoncĂ© – Single Ladies music video
