Social Media Page Terminology

Lewis Capaldi is a pop artist similar to Rudimental as they both produce pop music.  I found Capaldi’s Facebook page, took some screenshots and annotated some of the key features on it.

Some of the key conventions which I have picked up on and are included in every social media page is:

Header Image: This is an image of the artist that is placed at the top of a page displaying them and their brand.

Tag:  A tag is a keyword added to a social media post to categorize content. You can also tag someone in a post or photo, which creates a link to their social media profile and associates them with the content.

Hashtag: A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by the “#” sign. Hashtags are used on social media to tag posts as part of a larger conversation (such as #HootChat) or topic (such as #Superbowl). Clicking a hashtag reveals the latest posts that include the tag. Hashtags are searchable, and serve a similar role to keywords.

Promote: Promote is a term used in different contexts by the various social networks, but it always indicates some form of payment to gain access to a wider audience than could be achieved through organic content.Facebook uses the term “boost” for promoting a specific post, but “promote” to describe promoting a Page.

Engagement: The number of people who reacted to your posts, such as like, share, love, comment etc… The more reactions you have on your post, the higher the engagement. Marketers often talk to ‘page engagement’ to refer to how often people react to the content published on the page. If the engagement is low, it means that very often, people don’t like, comment, share, love etc… on the Facebook posts. The engagement is one of the most regarded data that Facebook check for your page.

Caption: A caption is a description that accompanies a photo on social media. Captions can include text, hashtags, @ mentions, and emojis. Captions are an important part of telling your photo’s story on social media and a key driver of engagement.

There are also many other conventions which are consistent through an artists social media page such as; About section, page followers, pin to top, bio, comment, engagement etc.  Social media is also a way for the artist to convey their brand and star image through marketing campaigns
