The Camera Talks

We were given a task to take lots of photos and to create a mood board with just nine of them, after that we then had to annotate the images with three connotations on each picture:

  • One technical term
  • One denotation
  • One analysis hashtag

We did take some good pictures but also some of them were not very good because some of the photos were blurry and dark.  My camera skills have improved because I now know what aperture and shutter speed is and how it can affect a photo and show off my high skill shots.  I did achieve my aims because I did take some good quality photos.  This will help me in the future with my own production because I will know what kind of angle and shot I will take to for the best possible looking picture.  When creating my final design I will take into consideration the distance, angles, framing, composition, narrative and represent to make sure my final design will be the best that it can be.

Technical Camera Terms

Our task was to go around our school and take lots of pictures to create a story with all different shots and angles.  We took all of these angles and shots into consideration when taking the pictures to get the best fit for our story line. In the pictures above we have taken all different kinds of photos:

  • Close up
  • long shot
  • Mid shot
  • High angle
  • Low angle

We also explored about thew shutter speed; when the the shutter speed is very quick it means the lens will close quicker and the picture will be taken quicker.  When you have the settings on a slow shutter speed more light gets into the camera.  A fast shutter speed picture would be taken for quick real time activities; a running race.  The aperature is another camera term which determines how big the hole on the lens is to allow little or a lot of light, the smaller the hole the less light on the picture whereas the bigger the hole the more light on the picture.

This will help me when creating my magazine because I will know which angles and shots look the best and for what time of atmosphere and theme.

My image that uses mise-en-scene to communicate meaning.

Made with Padlet

We searched up about different aspects of the folk culture and chose some pictures that fits the theme of folk, we then added these picture and gifs onto our mood board that we created.  After we added the pictures we added text to the pictures to help the audience understand why we included the images.

These sticky notes were what the audience thought best describes what our model was looking and feeling like.  We picked out a random piece of paper from a hat and my group got ‘folk’ as our genre.  We then created a mood board with all different aspects from the genre of folk.  This will help the audience get more of an idea as to what the features of ‘folk’ really are.

Please click on the image to see all of the images.

For this picture we picked out the correct clothing for the genre (folk), we took the picture with a white background behind to make the picture look more professional and to make our model stand out more.  We also decided to make sure the sun was shining in our models direction to create natural light which could represent  a ‘folk’ lady who is very natural.  Our model also posed in a certain way to make you feel like you are actually looking at a folk lady.

All of this will help me with my magazine because I will know to focus on one genre and will be able to find appropriate images to go onto my magazine.  Also I now know I shouldn’t have objects in the pictures that have no relevance to the topic/genre.

Conventions is how media producers normally do certain tasks, this has made me aware that media producers plan and research a lot about the topic / genre of their next media post/activity.  The conventions are the ingredients that go into the genre e.g. ‘folk’.  The audience will understand this so it is giving them hat they want.

Print Media that Communicates Meaning

I have annotated Clean Bandit’s tour poster, I now know why some picture are so bright and why the fonts are aesthetically pleasing.  I also learnt about Mes and how important lighting, colours, fonts, images, gestures and body language is to communicate a narrative.

This will impact on my own production because I will take into consideration:

  • The lighting
  • Colours
  • Fonts
  • Images
  • Gestures
  • Body language

In my magazine in will need to consider the size of the text and the font of the text to draw the audience in and so the font fits swell with the theme of my production.  I will also consider the colours to go with my production to make the writing stand out more.

So… Hello Media Studies

I am hoping to learn:

  • How to use the media to eventually branch to other companies so we can work together and make projects together to make a profit for both our companies.
  • I am also hoping to learn how to make my online presentations more presentable and easier to read and understand.

Skills I already have are :

  • A wide range of knowledge on how to use media to get information across to others.
  • How to create basic slide shows and power points.

I think media studies could help me with:

  • My future in any job, due to technology increasing and expanding to almost daily use.
  • Creating an aesthetically pleasing presentation in a future job to help promote of sell an item or idea.
  • Communicating with other colleagues via media.

The Media Ecology. Map of concepts and mediascape.

With just one component missing from the Media Ecology all other aspects will be affected because they all need each other to keep the system flowing, for example; if you got rid of the audiences then people creating the media would make no money at all because no one is watching or reacting to their media.  It is the audience and I who both need to understand the Media Ecology because I need to know what to think about when creating media and the audience need to know that without them none of the Media Ecology would work.

The lego exercise is all about trying to show how different aspects of all different daily jobs need each other to work, for example in this picture the lego is built to look like a petrol station, someone fills the pumps up with petrol then someone fills their car up with petrol, so it is a continuous cycle and that without one they both would not work.

My magazine will include all the components of the Media Ecology so my audience understand that all of the components play an important role within and that if one is missing then the whole systems fails.  When creating my magazine I will need to take into consideration:

  • How I will promote my magazine to others.
  • The age range of the audience and who will be viewing it.

These are the collective ideas of how the Media Ecology works, all the aspects and have everything links together.

So…I’m a media prosumer

Media is used for many reasons, for example:

  • Entertainment
  • Social Interaction
  • Personal Identity
  • Information/Surveillance

I use media for all of these listed above but especially for entertainment and information.  I listen and watch to Skysports to catch up on all the highlights in sport that I have missed, Skysports also entertains me and so does Netflix where I watch lots of films of all different genres.

I have made this collage to show what entertains me (Netflix to watch films), what gives me information (Talk Sport), how I interact with others (Snapchat to message others) and my personal identity (NBA).

The Blumler and Katz theory is what the audience do for the media, for example:

  • I watch Skysports, I am a viewer
  • I react to people’s posts on Instagram

I am helping media companies everyday by watching and reacting to their media, this makes them money and eventually a profit.  This knowledge will help me when I create my media because I now know that the audience must enjoy the media I create if i wanted to make a profit from it.

When making media I will be mindful of the audience and the age category that I create my media for so that it is appropriate for the audience.  Also I would give the audience as much to use as possible so therefore they don’t get bored of the same type of media each and every time.  This means I can maximise my profits and to then keep the system flowing so I then keep making money.
